What's So Funny About Peace, Love and Esperanto?

Writing articles like this is a tricky business. If they're 100% facts and figures -- they are boring and nobody wants to read them; if they're too cutesy and funny, people don't get any of the important info and the subjects you are profiling get offended and you sound arrogant. It's the balance between the two that works -- and whether that balance is balanced depends on the politcs of each reader.

Skribi artikolojn ĉi tiajn estas tikla afero. Se ili konsistas 100%-e el faktoj kaj ciferoj, ili tedas kaj neniu volas legi ilin; se ili estas tro ĉarmecaj kaj amuzaj, homoj ricevas neniom el la gravaj informoj kaj la homoj priskribitaj ofendiĝas kaj la ĵurnalisto ŝajnas aroga. Estas ekvilibro inter la du kio funkcias -- kaj ĉu tiu ekvilibro estas ekvilibra dependas je la politiko de ĉiu leganto.

Having said that, I wrote this article (which is now on the coffee tables of a half-million homes) because I really liked what you and your organization are doing, I like the language, I think the history is fascinating and I wanted to promote it. If I were to pitch a newspaper a story on "the history of Esperanto" they would immediately reject it -- that subject is boring and inaccessible to your average reader. Newspapers want color and characterizations and something "eveyone" can identify with. You'll notice that there is about 90% more "info and facts" in this article than most matg features!

Kun tiu vidpunkto en la fono, mi verkis tiun ĉi artikolon (kiu nun estas sur la salontabloj en duono da miliono da hejmoj) ĉar tre plaĉas al mi tio, kion vi kaj via organizaĵo faras; plaĉas al mi la lingvo, mi opinias ke la historio estas fascina kaj mi volis antaŭenpuŝi ĝin. Se mi proponus al ĵurnalo artikolon pri "la historio de Esperanto" oni tuj malakceptus ĝin -- la temo estas teda kaj ne alirebla por la averaĝa leganto. ĵurnaloj deziras koloron kaj karakterpriskribojn kaj ion kun kiu "ĉiu" povas identiĝi. Vi rimarkos ke estas proksimume 90% pli da "informoj kaj faktoj" en tiu ĉi artikolo ol en la plimulto el la ĉefartikoloj en magazinoj! [La artikolo aperis en la dimanĉa magazino de la ĵurnalo.]

I wrote the article from an outsider's perspective (yes, with a few jabs here and there to lighten it up) but finished it with what I thought was a very positive pitch towards your organization. I did this because a) it was true; and b) I didn't want to write another "look how silly and eccentric these people are" of those articles.

Mi verkis la artikolon el la perspektivo de eksterulo (jes, kun kelkaj moketoj tie kaj ĉi tie por malpezigi ĝin) sed finis ĝin per io, kiun mi opiniis esti tre pozitiva varbo por via organizo. Mi tion faris ĉar a) tio estas vera; kaj b) mi ne volis verki ankoraŭ plian artikolon kiu esence diras "vidu kiom sensencaj kaj strangulaj estas tiuj ĉi homoj".

I've accepted people will complain about whatever is written about the language and the culture. That doesn't bother me. As long as the message is clear and that I know I've honestly portrayed everyone, then I'm happy.

Mi jam akceptis tion, ke homoj plendos pri kio ajn estas skribita pri la lingvo kaj la kulturo. Tio ne ĝenas min. Kondiĉe ke la mesaĝo estas klara kaj ke mi scias ke mi honeste priskribis ĉiujn, mi kontentas.

And yes, after reading it, even my girlfriend said "well, I think you were kind of critical but, now I'm really interested in the language" and so we are both doing the online courses. You're right, it takes time but I'm into it. And everyone in this office has greeted each other with "saluton" today. Lets hope it sticks.

Kaj jes, post ol legi ĝin, eĉ mia amatino diris, "nu, mi pensas ke vi estis iom kritika, sed nun mi vere interesiĝas pri la lingvo" kaj do ni ambaŭ partoprenas en la interretaj kursoj. Vi pravas, necesas tempo sed mi ĝuas ĝin. Kaj ĉiuj en tiu ĉi oficejo hodiaŭ salutis unu la alian per "saluton". Ni esperu ke tio restas.
