Sweeney Todd and Other (Neo-)Victorian Criminalities

MARKET; "Sweet" anthology from Freya's Bower
Word count: 3K to 8K
Deadline for submissions: September 30, 2008.

Content: No sex. No groping or graphic eroticism. We want plenty of sexual tension, but the hero copping a feel or vice versa will not work for our sweet category. No foul language unless it's pertinent to the character's character.

Genres: Any genre is fine, but I may put category sections in the anthology if there are several of various genres such as paranormal, contemporary, fantasy, sci-fi, etc.

(Depending on what stories I accept, this anth may launch our Bubblegum Romance line.)

I want to see well-developed characters. Show me women who are strong but also possess insecurities. Show me heroes that are the same.

No first person present tense stories, please. First person is fine-if well written-but not in present tense. Third person stories preferred.

Stories must revolve around the allure of romance and a good, sound plot. Please exercise showing mode, don't tell the story.

Attach your FULL submission as an MS Word document and email it to bicknellbrown @ sbcglobal.net with the words SWEET ANTH in the subject heading.

MARKET: Men in Shorts
Lori Perkins is going to be editing an anthology called "Men in Shorts" for www.ravenousromance.com. I can't get the site to work, so I hope you have better luck.
Deadline: 24 August 2008

"send me stories at lperkinsagencyATyahooDOTcom.

I'm also going to be editing MEN IN SHORTS for them. That's an anthology about hot guys in shorts from the cute mailman to the basketball player to the bike messenger and that surfer dude. I am hoping you get the gist.

I'm looking for stories between 1000 and 5000 words. Be creative. These stories can be from either a man or women's perspective, gay, straight, etc.

I'm working with a new epublisher and they've begged for this book, so I'm going to let them have it. They'll pay $1 a page and then a 38% royalty. They want to publish in December, so I need the stories in a month (by August 24). No previously published stories. The stories have to be sexual and explicit, but they should also be fun."

Normal caveats apply - it's a new publisher so look before you leap.

MARKET/ADVICE: Black Lace anthologies
So I was browsing the market listings at ERWA, and was struck by the Black Lace Books anthology listing, which pays rather more nicely than most of the others, and seems to have been written by someone actually familiar with written English, unlike a depressing percentage of the other entries there.

Their general guidelines for novelists are very emphatic on one point, though: "We accept submissions from female authors only, with no exceptions. The fact that all our authors are guaranteed to be women is an essential part of our marketing strategy." Barring expensive and uncomfortable surgery, that leaves me out in the cold.

It seemed like this principle might be relaxed for the short-story collections, but since they don't give an e-mail address, there's no easy way to check. Anyone here happen to have inside info on this point?

ETA: Though if I'd been paying attention, I'd have known that [info]erastes had already posted this market

MARKET: Lethe Press

Editor Chip Capelli will be reading for a forthcoming Lethe Press gay men’s erotica anthology tentatively entitled Gemini: Twice A Man's Pleasure.
Submissions will be read from September 2, 2008 through January 2, 2009

Stories should be engaging first and foremost. As part of a new Zodiac-inspired line of gay erotica, all submissions must address a theme inspired by the specific sign: in this case, Gemini.

Please depict acts of safer sex only - unless the story is obviously set before the AIDS crisis.

Word Count: Submissions should be no less than 2,000 words (yes, it’s a theme) and no longer than 6,000 words.

Payment: 2 cents a word, of course, to a maximum of $100, plus 2 copies of the book. Additionally, the publisher will choose one author, who in his opinion crafted the best story, to will receive a copy of all forthcoming volumes, 12 in all, in this series.

Submissions will be read from September 2, 2008 through January 2, 2009.

MARKET; ManLoveRomance - Esprit de Corps
Deadlines: variable

ManLoveRomance Press (MLR) is a U.S.-based royalty-paying print publisher of gay and m/m erotic fiction. MLR is launching its Esprit de Corps series, projected to be quarterly releases of military and veterans stories. The first entry, Esprit de Corps, an anthology, releases November 2008. We are seeking submissions for the series which will include both novel-length titles and anthologies.

Dedication: This series is dedicated to those gay men who by not telling continue to serve our country with pride and honor. To those gay men who
found the strength to tell and the courage to hold their heads high while being discharged in disgrace. To those gay men who have sacrificed their lives to maintain our freedoms while sacrificing their freedom to be heard.

/Till we are judged for the honor and strength of our character and not by the prejudice and weakness of others...we wish you Fair Seas, Following Winds, Safe Harbor & Silent Running. (Courtesy of RM2(SS) Dick D.)/

Story: Acceptable manuscripts are well written gay or m/m romances, with plots driven by distinctive characterization, in which the military/veterans element has a strong presence in both setting and plot. The manuscript must include erotic content that furthers character development or plot. The author’s voice is marked by a sense of authenticity in both the romance and the military setting. Period may behistorical, contemporary, or futuristic. We are particularly interested in seeing a novel that incorporates strong themes relating to the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy, but we certainly want to read the work of authors who write on other subjects within the military/veterans theme.

See our submissions guidelines at http://www.mlrpress.com/Employment.php.

Publication dates/Deadlines: The projected publication dates for each successive title in the series are President’s Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Veterans Day. The time of submission is immaterial unless the author believes that the story has a particularly strong relevance to one of those four releases dates. In that case, the deadline for submission is four months prior to the target release date.

Length: Contributions to anthologies may run up to 40,000 words; there’s no upper limit on the length of novels while the story stays strong and
the content meets guidelines; we will also consider vignettes of up to 10,000 words. For scheduling purposes, novels are preferred but all
other lengths are welcomed. See our submissions guidelines at http://www.mlrpress.com/Employment.php.

Submissions: ManLoveRomance accepts submissions or queries at mlrpress.subsandqueries@gmail.com.

Bottoms Up: More Red-Cheeked Erotica
Editor: Rachel Kramer Bussel
Publisher: Cleis Press in 2009
Deadline: July 14, 2008
Payment: $50/story and 2 copies of the anthology

Editor Rachel Kramer Bussel (http://www.rachelkramerbussel.com) is looking for erotica stories on her favorite topic: spanking! I want creative, original spanking stories in a variety of settings using all sorts of implements. Spanking as part of roleplay, discipline, adventure, foreplay, etc. are fair game. The book will be primarily heterosexual, with a mix of male and female spankers and spankees, though there will be some lesbian/gay/bisexual content included. I'd especially like stories that aren't run-of-the-mill but that are believable/realistic. The more creative, the better, though I tend not to like the sci fi/fantasy genres. Humor is acceptable as long as the stories are also arousing (see L. Elise Bland's "Every Good Boy Deserves Favors in Naughty Spanking Stories from A to Z for an example).

ETA: Heard back from them regarding sexual orientation and they are accepting heterosexual stories only.

MARKET: Pink Petal Books

Pink Petal Books
Various deadlines

At Pink Petal Books we believe that love is a beautiful thing, and what’s more romantic than receiving flowers? Of course, giving flowers doesn’t have to be romantic, but isn’t it more fun when it is? Pink Petal Books seeks well-written romance stories starting with one character receiving flowers. The flowers can be received for any reason, and they don’t necessarily need to be received from the other major character(s) in the story.

Each themed anthology will contain three to four 15,000-25,000 word novellas released first as individual ebooks, then published together into one print volume. Heat levels in each story need to start at sensual and work up to erotic. On the Pink Petal Books scale these will be rose or cosmos stories, with partially or fully explored love scenes. Language may range from the occasional frank or graphic language to no holds barred.

Our first anthology will be Pink Petal Books Presents: Shifters. All stories need to contain a shifter as either the hero or heroine. Different shifters preferred. Think about animals you haven’t seen in books, or seen very rarely, and use your imagination. You can submit a wolf, but preference will be given to the different animals, so the wolf story should be exceptional and new. Deadline for stories will be July 15 with decisions made by August 1. Electronic publication will happen during our official launch month of October, with print publication to follow in February 2009.

As long as your story starts with a character receiving flowers and fits the theme and sensuality level, there are no other restrictions on genre.

Payment will be 35% royalty on sales price for ebooks (except stories sold through third party vendors, which will be 45% of net (sales price - vendor cut = net). Print books will be our standard 10% royalty split between the three or four authors in the volume.

How to submit: Please email your complete manuscript attached in RTF/Word format to meditor@pinkpetalbooks.com. Include in the body of the email a word count and brief blurb (one or two paragraphs). For more information about us, please read our complete submission guidelines.

Upcoming anthologies are:

Pink Petal Books Presents: Dragons
Submission Deadline: November 15, decisions by Dec 1
Electronic Publication: March 2009, print July 2009

Pink Petal Books Presents: Nature (think Shamans and Druids)
Submission Deadline: April 15, decisions by May 1
Electronic Publication: August 2009, print December 2009

(Director's note:  I'm assuming that they mean July 15 2008, November 15 2008 and April 15 2009 but I'm getting confirmation. I don't know this publisher at all, so normal caveats apply)

Lace and Blade
August 1, 2008

Lace and Blade  is accepting submissions for its second anthology of "elegant, sensual, romantic fantasy, emphasizing sharp verbal repartee as much as sharp pointed weapons, rapier rather than broadsword."

Editor Deborah J. Ross is interested in "characters - both men and women - with vibrant personalities, complex, dashing, and very sexy. I'm particularly interested in stories that have magic and action, but in which conflict is resolved not by violence but by insight, creativity, and compassion. I'd love to see "win-win" endings, sense-of-wonder, plot twists and turnabout.

Alternate sexuality is welcome; eroticism a definite plus; exotic, non-Western European settings also encouraged. Please read the first volume to see what I'm looking for." The deadline for submissions is August 1, 2008. There are no minimum or maximum lengths, though Ross says longer stories must be "extraordinary." Ross will pay a 2 cents a word advance against royalties. The book will be released Valentine's Day, 2009.

Deadline: July 31, 2008. Submissions and requests for extended guidelines to Sacchi Green <sacchigreen@gmail.com>; please put "Girl Crazy" in the subject line. Original stories only.

Cruising - True Gay Stories of Public Erotica
Deadline 30 June 2008

Who can forget that rush of adrenaline when you walk in the backroom of a bar, or men steaming it up in gym showers, feet tapping in the stalls of college bathrooms and raunchy trysts in big city bathhouses, or small town sex arcades.    I'm  looking for TRUE stories of public sex for my new anthology. I am looking for tales that not only have an erotic element, but to also address the issues of sexual politics in the public arena. The stories must have great character development, and go beyond the trite male on male sex ritual. Two or more characters are appreciated.    </div>

It is the oldest fantasy in the book. The delivery guy shows up wearing his tight brown uniform, and you answer the door, fresh from the shower. One thing leads to another and … Or, a contractor comes over to plaster a wall on a hot day. He strips off his shirt, you offer him a cool drink, and … Have you every waited for an appliance delivery hoping for a big strapping man to come knocking at your door? When the cable guy finally arrived two hours late, was it worth the wait? Did a plumber ever offer to fix your pipes?

Desdmona’s Sex in the Rain Contest
Deadline: March 31, 2008

You know what they say about April Showers?

Well, we don’t want any of that crap.

It’s time for Desdmona.com’s latest sex story contest, and this one will take place in the rain. It could be one of those warm afternoon drizzles as the sun dips behind a cloud, or it could be an I-can-barely-breathe-through-the-gushing torrents type. But whatever it is, there has to be some of that wet stuff falling out of the sky. And no matter if the story is dark and hard, pelting, painful, wet, and cold or gentle and warm, cleansing, sprinkling, and fresh, it must have hot sizzling sex in it.Read more... )
