I've been a reader from as far back as I can remember, mostly speculative fiction of one sort or another. I wrote quite a lot of non-fiction over the years, it being part of the job of an industrial research scientist. But fiction was another matter, until I stumbled into the fanfiction for a particular show, and something connected. Science fiction/politics/gaysex. Apparently that particular combination was the one that pressed my buttons, and it's made up most of what I've written in the years since.
I stuck with fanfic for three years or so, and then had a story idea which used some of the characters but also used something which in my view didn't really fit into theat universe. So I wrote it as original fiction, with avatar characters. There not being many markets for 13,000 word erotic sf stories at the time, I sent it to Circlet Press and forgot about it for a while. (Cecilia rejected it after a couple of years, but it's now on my list of things to expand to novel length.) But after that I started writing more original fiction, and the first piece I sold was a short story published in 2002.
I sold a few more pieces after that, but things really took off for me when Loose Id picked up The Syndicate, the fluffy BDSM gay romantic comedy in space I wrote with my writing partner Alex Woolgrave, who may be better known to some of you as
predatrix. I've currently got ten books at Loose Id, all m/m, plus short stories published elsewhere, including Alyson's Ultimate Gay Erotica 2005.
I haven't written fanfic for three or four years now, but I certainly wouldn't rule out writing it again if I had the right idea. And I wrote an essay last year, On fanfic -- Some answers to the question 'You're such a good writer, why don't you write for money?'
There's a full bibliography of my published profic on my website here:
