Call for Submissions: Queer Gothic

Open call for submissions for a Queer Gothic Anthology to be published by QueeredFiction where genre is queered. Deadline is 31st August 2009. We're looking for gothic tales of horror and romance. Your submission should be a short story between 3,000 and 10,000 words. We are seeking fiction with positive images of queer characters. We’re not looking for clichés. We do not want reprints. We are seeking first world rights for this anthology which will be published as an eBook and in Print format. Full guidelines here.

Submissions open: 1st June 2009 to 31st August 2009

As a queer publisher, QueeredFiction would like to have an emphasis on the queer community as a whole, rather than by segments. So ideally the perfect submission would have 'queer characters' in the forefront and in the background ... just mainly prominent!

Gothic fiction (sometimes referred to as Gothic horror) is a genre of literature that combines elements of both horror and romance.
[...]
Prominent features of Gothic fiction include terror (both psychological and physical), mystery, the supernatural, ghosts, haunted houses and Gothic architecture, castles, darkness, death, decay, doubles, madness, secrets and hereditary curses. The stock characters of Gothic fiction include tyrants, villains, bandits, maniacs, Byronic heroes, persecuted maidens, femmes fatales, madwomen, magicians, vampires, werewolves, monsters, demons, revenants, ghosts, perambulating skeletons, the Wandering Jew and the Devil himself.
[...]
The term "Gothic" came to be applied to the literary genre precisely because the genre dealt with emotional extremes and dark themes, and because it found its most natural settings in the buildings of this style — often spelled "Gothick", to highlight their "medievalness" - castles, mansions, and monasteries, often remote, crumbling, and ruined. It was a fascination with this architecture and its related art, poetry (such as Graveyard Poets), and even landscape gardening that inspired the first wave of gothic novelists.

Accentuate Writers and Accentuate Services (the editors), in conjunction with Twin Trinity Media Company (the publisher), are seeking open submissions for the 2009 Accentuate Writers Erotic Anthology from you (the writers!).

This is NOT a contest, but open submissions of erotic short stories.

There is no reading fee. There is no cost to submit. There is no cost for being published. In fact, you are not required to pay for anything. You are not even required to purchase anything to be considered for publication. All authors selected for publication will receive a royalty contract as well as a small upfront payment (between $15-250 upfront), to be made as an 'offer for advance'. Each author will receive a percentage of royalty for each book sold (as a standard royalty paying author's contract), based on their percentage of contributing to the anthology (determined by final word counts).

All selected authors will receive two free copies of the anthology in which their story appears, as well as being able to purchase books at a 50% discount off retail sale price, as the special author's pricing. No purchase is required, ever.

If interested in submitting, please keep the following in mind:

Accentuate is not looking for pornography, neither are we looking for romance writing. What we seek is something somewhere in the middle: romance with a heat level that sizzles, while still telling a great story!

What we want: (cut to publisher's site)

Unmasked II: More Erotic Tales of Gay Superheroes

Edited by Eric Summers
Deadline: March 15, 2009

The response to "Unmasked: Erotic Tales of Gay Superheroes" was so positive that we have decided to publish a sequel.

What made the first "Unmasked" so well received was the originality of the characters and the great amount of humor, making it erotic and fun! If you contributed to "Unmasked," please consider a sequel to your story.

For those who wish to contribute for the first time, we are looking for superheroes that are original and not cliché, and a sexy sidekick is always welcome! Your superhero should have both an extraordinary talent and not so obvious weakness. All we ask is that your superheroes are hot and their actions hotter. And of course, we want them to be fun.

Boys Getting Ahead

Edited by Mickey Erlach
Deadline October 15 2009

Everyone has heard of the casting couch, but did you know it stretches far beyond Hollywood? Many a stud has used his “talents” to get ahead, whether in an office, a loading dock, a store, or especially in politics. After all, to get ahead in life, you sometimes have to take it like a man, or give as good as you get.

BOYS GETTING AHEAD is about those ambitious young men, who will do what it takes as often as necessary to grab the brass ring or at least wear it. There are no limits to what some of these guys will do. If the boss wants it rough, that’s cool. If the boss wants romance, that’s perfectly acceptable. And, if the boss wants to throw you to the curb and treat you like a whore, that’s the chance you take. Who said having a successful life was going to be easy?

Or, during wrestling practice, you are paired up with the best built, most handsome guy on the team, whose singlet is stretched beyond its limits everywhere possible. You are the quarterback and the new center has the hottest butt you’ve ever seen, and now he is bent over in front of you with your hands against his crotch, ready to hike the ball. What do you do? From Circlet Press
Deadline 31st October 2008

Circlet Press is looking for stories to be published in its series of erotic e-books of all original stories. The reading period begins September 15, 2008 and ends October 31st 2008. All stories for ebook publication will conform to the same standards of quality and sensuality as in all Circlet’s print books. Ebook only publications pay $25 per story, with an additional $25 for any book that goes into print.

See webpage for full submission details.

Like An Animal
Erotic tales of werewolves. We did an anthology with this theme back in 1995 called “The Beast Within.” Explore the animal side of lust, and the attraction of dark magic. Whether you see lycanthropy as a sexually transmitted disease or an intriguing fetish, celebrate sex and desire through this fantastical lens.

Like A Myth
Give us an erotic tale with its basis in non-western folklore or myth. Faraway places and fantasy are the rule, which means avoiding settings anchored in the Western World (Canada, the United States, and the bulk of Europe). There are many other cultures to explore as a basis for fantasy, each with their own rich environment and colorful folklore, that creates the potential for some very engaging erotica. Genie granting steamy wishes in the Arabian desert. Sexy Russian ice princes. Japanese fox spirits. Transport the reader into a whole new world that will leave them gasping for more.

Wired Hard 4.0
Following on from the successful print books Wired Hard 1, 2, and 3, we will be reading for hard-edged erotic stories of men on men. Whether you explore faraway planets, cyberpunk, or space opera, or swords & sorcery, urban fantasy, or something that defies description of genre, if it involves masculine desire for the masculine, we want it. Please note that we expect writers to either be male or to write under male/gender neutral pseudonyms. If you need some examples, ebook editions of Wired Hard 2 and Wired Hard 3 are available for sale.

Planet Boylove
This will be a collection of erotica with a gay male or m/m theme, but its main difference from the Wired Hard books is that female author names and female pseudonyms may be used. It’s no secret that a lot of the gay male pornography, erotica, and romance novels of the past 30 years were/are written by female authors under pseudonyms. Less talked about among traditional publishers is how many readers of m/m fiction may be female. Through the worlds of fanfiction and japanese yaio in translation, though, there is undeniably an audience whose enthusiasm for boylove ought to be recognised and celebrated! Hence, this book. Science fiction or fantasy explicitly erotic stories of m/m please. If you’re really not sure if your story should go in Wired Hard or in Planet Boylove, don’t worry. We’ll figure it out.

Up for Grabs
An anthology of erotic futures where gender is up for grabs. Today thousands of people spend time on the Internet identified with a gender other than the one they were born with. Sometimes they do so for erotic gratification, and sometimes because they get a special benefit for one gender over another. How will people be able to experience other genders in the future? Why will they do so? Would you change genders just for fun? To carry on the family name? To have a child? What if you got a tax break for doing so? What if you could choose to be no gender at all until you went on a date? Would you want to try being both genders at once, or would you rather start over and invent your own? In the future, will it be widely acceptable to be gender queer? Illegal? Mandatory? UP FOR GRABS will be strictly science fiction. Setting your story twenty years in the future does not automatically make it science fiction. We will consider stories that are ‘retro,’ that take on gender stereotypes of the past and give them a future twist.

As mentioned above, reading period for all anthologies ends October 31st, but books may fill up earlier than that if good submissions come in, so please do not wait until the last minute to submit!

Lori Perkins is going to be editing an anthology called "Men in Shorts" for www.ravenousromance.com. I can't get the site to work, so I hope you have better luck.
Deadline: 24 August 2008

"send me stories at lperkinsagencyATyahooDOTcom.

I'm also going to be editing MEN IN SHORTS for them. That's an anthology about hot guys in shorts from the cute mailman to the basketball player to the bike messenger and that surfer dude. I am hoping you get the gist.

I'm looking for stories between 1000 and 5000 words. Be creative. These stories can be from either a man or women's perspective, gay, straight, etc.

I'm working with a new epublisher and they've begged for this book, so I'm going to let them have it. They'll pay $1 a page and then a 38% royalty. They want to publish in December, so I need the stories in a month (by August 24). No previously published stories. The stories have to be sexual and explicit, but they should also be fun."

Normal caveats apply - it's a new publisher so look before you leap.

Editor Joseph R.G. DeMarco will be reading for a forthcoming Lethe Press gay men's anthology tentatively entitled
A Study in Lavender: Queering Holmes.
Submissions will be read from January 1, 2009 through March 30, 2009

All stories must be both gay-themed and mysteries set in the Holmes mythos, however the character of Sherlock Holmes need not be the focus or even present.

Writers must do their homework to ensure that the stories are historically accurate if taking place in the Holmes era (though tales can be set later than the Victorian era, such as in the Golden Age of Hollywood during the filming of a Holmes movie or other appropriately familiar settings).

Before you submit, please query the editor with a synopsis of your story and the content, specifically, which characters are being queered.

Word Count: Submissions should be between 1,000 words and 8,000 words. Longer works may be considered but require advance permission from the editor.

Payment: 2 cents a word, of course, plus 2 copies of the book.

Submissions will be read from January 1, 2009 through March 30, 2009. Queries/Submissions to: holmesanthology@gmail.com

No electronic submissions will be accepted EXCEPT in the case of writers living outside of the United States.

A street address for submissions will be provided once you send an email query with the required synopsis, etc. If you would like to have your submission returned, please send a self-addressed envelope with sufficient return postage.

Electronic copies will be required for submissions accepted for publication.

Email queries and other communication may be made to holmesanthology@gmail.com

I received an email from Patty G. Henderson regarding her Chilling Tales anthology (GLBT horror flash fiction).

There weren't enough submissions for the book to meet PD Publishing's minimum word count requirement. The anthology's canceled because of it.

The deadline isn't specified in the PD Publishing page, but since I received the email today, I'm guessing that the actual deadline was Dec. 1.

"Kicked Out" call for submissions
Edited by: Sassafras Lowrey*
Publisher: Homofactus Press
Deadline: March 1, 2008

Kicked Out is an anthology, which chronicles the experiences of former queer youth and current queer youth who were forced to leave home as minors because of their sexuality and/or gender identity. Kicked Out tells our collective stories of survival, weaving together descriptions of abuse, and homelessness with poignant accounts of the ways in which the queer community offered sanctuary, and the power and importance of creating our own chosen families etc. Kicked Out offers advice and wisdom to the queer youth of today from former queer youth who have survived. Additionally, it provides the opportunity for readers to get a glimpse into the world of those queer youth who as a result of circumstance have had to leave home, while simultaneously shattering the stereotypes of who queer youth are, and what they have the potential to become.
