I couldn’t manage to keep my resolve of not watching part #5, so I finally watched it on iPlayer. In my usual indecisive way, I’m in two minds about it.

Nominate your favorite female (cis or trans) characters! I nom'ed Selena from 28 Days Later. Morgana and Gwen already have threads, but I haven't seen Nimueh.
There's sooo many awesome women. Lisa Simpson? HELL YES. Tara McClay? Awww yes. Kaylee? For sure. Doctor Martha Jones? YEP YEP YEP. Liz Lemon? ROFLMAO YEAH. Molly Grue? DEFINITELY. Faye and Ed? HOLY SHIT YES. Mary Lennox? A+++. I'm not even entirely sure WHAT THIS IS but it is MAKING MY DAY. :D
Other cool things: Polyamorous Big Bang Challenge on dreamwidth. Sign-ups close July 18. ETA: AND ON LIVEJOURNAL:
polybigbang!
Also,
transficathon sign-ups are open until Friday. I'm still debating whether to sign up. I have so much on my plate right now and reel_merlin coming up and asdflkjalk I just don't know. I might see if I can pinch-hit instead.

Last night was AWESOME! :-D
The open mic sheet filled right up (and we didn't have to cajole people into getting their courage up, or anything. People just showed up wanting to read!!!) and there were a couple of people who were first-time readers (one of them - Fadhiya - performed a piece about freedom and inspiration and it made me cry. Among other people. WAH!) and there were a couple of old hats (like meeee), there was a little bit of music (Hex and Deliriumfae did a song together, and I sang Summertime, and a gal named... Chris? turned up to sing something as well) and a lot of poetry.
Jessica Ruano's set was short but very good. I quite enjoyed the "You don't fuck with a poet" piece. It made me grin. :-D
The Open Mic List:
1) Nadine (Adorkable Thespian)
2) Me
3) Janika
4) None of the Above (Hex and DeliriumFae)
5) Chris
6) Alisa
7) Fadhiya
8) Jill Anne
9) Hodan Ibrahim (Who's going to be our Feature for October!!!)
Rawk! :-D
Anyway, for those who missed, you missed an AWESOME show -- the place was packed and everyone had a good time! :-D (Some folks were asking after my girlfriend, wondering if she'd gone back to the states. I think it's nice that they ask about her).
Jessica made Haiku Magnets which were for sale by donation (I got two, which shall adorn my fridge shortly). I different take on magnetic poetry, I think. ;-)
Random thing I discovered: Four gigs (provided you are getting the gig-space for free) a week, at $5 a head cover-charge with 30 paying attendees showing up every night? Is a living wage.
Who knew? :-D
And, yeah, yeah, I know. Getting that kind of performance draw 16 days a month, every month, without incuring extensive travel expences? Is next to impossible. At least in a small city like Ottawa. But it's good to know that one could, conceivably, boost one's monthly income at least a little bit by doing a show like this.
I mean, think about it, if we can get 60 full-paying attendees out to every VoV? Each of our features takes home a good $150 for an evening's 30-60 minute performance. Which is way more than I typically make in an eight-hour day at the office.
So I think that's fucking *awesome*!
Anyway. If you missed out last night, you really did miss out on a phenominal show. Here's hoping you'll all be able to make it out next month (August 11th) when we have the illustrious Danielle Gregoire performing.
Adorkable Thespian had this to say about the evening! :-D
<*runs off to squee some more*>

P.S.: Random Funny (From JuniorCrone, I think): I'm in an Open Relationship with the Lord. Fun with poly -- polytheism, that is. ;-)

WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE UNICORNS?!
Thanks to our friends at Newsweek, we can play Madlib with an excerpt of Vanderbilt's masterpiece. Anybody want to give it a go? ( I need... )
I'll post any results tomorrow morningwhen I'm up three hours before everyone else because of a sick baby.
"On June 23, 2009, the 85-year-old Vanderbilt's novel entitled "Obsession: An Erotic Tale," was published by Ecco. The book has garnered media attention for its racy content, including, "scenes involving dildos, whips, silken cords and golden nipple clamps... spanking... Mint, cayenne pepper and a fresh garden carrot.. deployed in ways never envisioned by "The Joy of Cooking." And there is also a unicorn, though, blessedly, it remains a bystander."

Just as a reminder, I'm putting together a Leeke World group order.
We're going to be placing the order, on or around the 24th. This is mainly for the pre-order wigs, so it will take about 30 days for them to ship.
We've already got four people, so shipping shouldn't be too bad.
Let me know if you're interested.

1. Happy birthday to
bradcpu. May there be cake or cake like equivalent.
2. We dodged an out of state family visit - which is good news, since these relatives are the ones who live in a nice house 'exquisitely decorated' and judge others by the same material standards. We have a nice house - nothing 'exquisite about it. It is badly in need of repairs.
3.
xlorp is off at a Tori Amos concert tonight with his friend. Me, I am reading more spn big_bang stories
4. My cousin - the one who took 2 weeks unpaid leave to help me take care of my mother - is loosing her home. She needs to find some place for her and her developmentally disabled child to live. The fact that she has two adult children living at home - neither are working and neither is paying anything towards the house - ticks me off.
5. If I ever turn into an old fannish fart, please lob rocks at my head. From a safe distance.
5. Is there a Facebook ID Switching plugin? I have two Facebooks - one fannish and one for family. I can only read one at a time without logging out, then back in again.

( My Aunts )
I have nothing exciting to report from my day (laundry, kids, finally finished reorganizing post-trip), but I had a lovely evening because
apaulled decided we needed to celebrate Bastille Day properly and made French onion soup and cassoulet, then put on a DVD he'd made from a torrent someone had posted of the 2006 Les Miserables revival (undoubtedly recorded illegally, and with a terrible Fantine, but hey, it's been so many years since I saw the original cast in the pre-Broadway run at the Kennedy Center that I'll take what I can get). I suppose The Scarlet Pimpernel would have been appropriate but I don't have a DVD of any of the Broadway incarnations, though I'm sure I saw a concert performance with Linda Eder on public television at some point.
It's not France, but here are some photos of the French Quarter. Like so many here, I am getting up early to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (with birthday girl
gblvr, plus
perkypaduan, and
apaulled and my kids are coming too, though the older does not want to be seen with me and my friends and may sit elsewhere), so I am off to bed!

Velvet (bewitching Brews): Envelop yourself in the soft, sensual embrace of gentle sandalwood warmed by cocoa vanilla and a veil of deep myrrh.
Vial: mmm, chcoolate! A dry cocoa smell, not creamy milk chocolate.
Wet: Chocolate sandalwood?
Drydown: Sandalwood with chocolate and myrrh, yummy!
Dry: Myrrh with chocolate and sandalwood under. Very elegant. Dollface says I smell like play-doh with coconut in it. I question her taste.

(11) Household book of Anton Tucher 1507 – 1517 – “Item, 28th November paid by Virgili to Hans Staiber for 6 ells gray fustian and ½ atlas cord for my granddaughter a gown."
Fustian = Linen warped cloth with a cotton weft, and damnably hard to get these days. And, of course, woolens still predominate. However, that's the first written evidence I'd seen. And in my era, too - most information I find is either from too early or too late, with little information in the first thirty years of the sixteenth century.

Took the boys to see Transformers this afternoon (after prepping myself with 800mg Advil), and wasn't that fun? Things started blowing up sixty seconds in, and they never stopped. It was one long epic explosion. Afterwards in the ladies room, I overheard this conversation between two teenage girls.
Girl 1: OMG! Wasn't that the best movie ever? I mean EVER!. It was just so...cool.
Girl 2: Yeah. SO Cool.
Girl 1: And that guy, what was his name, the main guy?
Girle 2: Oh! Um...
Girl 1: The guy.
Girl 2: Um.
Sam, girls. His name was Sam. And I wasn't even paying attention.
These are the kinds of things that need to be in movie reviews. "Longest continuous explosion in cinematic history. Makes teenage girls' brains leak out their ears." Now that's useful info.
Passing on some meta on Torchwood CoE because it's very close to what I wanted to say, but didn't. I realize there are a few people on my flist who adored S3 (Caspe, I'm looking at you), and I respect that. But this post sums up my reaction very neatly. Thanks,
thady, for linking me. :D

As my French is appalling and I don't want to insult an entire nation, I will answer in English. I really like Croissants, in fact I love visiting bakeries in France. They smell so good, I mean like gorgeous, freshly baked bread an glorious odour that drifts on to the streets. If I lived in France I would happily live on their baguettes and "Laughing Cow", this is partially because it's difficult to get a half decent vegetarian meal.
I would love to visit Paris again. I went with my parents and the school, neither of which were particularly enjoyable experiences. We sat in a bus in the rain with the school and I fell out with my Dad when I went with my parents. Now I would go and pretend I am Amelie for a few days.

Yesterday was a bad day in general.
Today looks much better. Life is getting put in order. I'm uncertain about certain aspects of the future, but I feel like positive steps were taken today.
I am sad that I had to cancel Mystical Rome today, but my friends understood. I will make it up to them by having an extra cool game next time. Real life comes first.
I have also blown two submissions I wanted to send out today. I had planned on writing said entries in the last two days, but real life interfered. Neither submission was contracted, just speculative, but I try to keep track of it. Metrics help you judge success or failure. I do believe I can use the story ideas later.
I did edit a bit of Dylan and the Dream Pirates last night at
spickula's. I am working on the Battle of the World Snake.
I also went through and spent XP for my Camarilla characters. It is very easy to spend XP for Ulric? Does it help me kill? Does it help me pillage a village? Then buy it.
Juan Carlos is another world. His goal isn't to be the ultimate killing machine. I have all manner of different items to look at including Theban spread across in twelve books. I suspect that I am going to have to create a theban binder with all of the different Theban rituals.

I know it's been a while. My apologies. If you'd like to enter into the second Chopped Challenge, please list your ingredient suggestions as a reply to this post. Remember that the previous ingredient winners (garlic, vinegar, chicken, onion and mushrooms) can not be used again for another three rotations. I'll post a poll on Friday, July 17th with all suggested ingredients and the poll will remain open for a period of four days to allow everyone a vote. The poll will close on the morning of July 20th and the top five ingredients selected will be posted no later than six that evening. From that time, you will have one week to complete your dish--take a picture if you'd like--and share it with the group. General rules are here. Any questions, just let me know.
