The Erigineea Saga's Journal Thursday, June 15 2006 Strip #236 The Cthava'thava, "Children of Cthava", are sort of "gypsy" faeries. They move around a lot, are generally not well liked, accused of being thieves, and a bit more into mysticism than the Cama'thaen. To some extent this is probably true (not implying anything about the Romani people), as they have been known to accept people who were sent off for being thieves into their ranks, but that's more about giving people second chances. Cawanor is the God of the elves and the unicorn-looking Goddess is Anith'ae-Rihn, the Goddess of Ether. Friday, June 16 2006 Strip #237 The box Cawanor is reaching into symbolizes Tragash Hold. He and Ether are currently working together, but such alliances tend to be short-lived and out of convenience. The other box isn't really supposed to be smaller, as it symbolizes the city. The little thing sticking up by the speech bubble is a marker symbolizing a Temple of Shol-Yunali. And I am rather confused as to why I put Anith'ae-Rihn there, as Krizz ar Cheroz is a Candidate of Shol-yunali, featured in the first panel here. Tuesday, June 27 2006 Strip #238 * This is the start of a new storyline, "Strangleweed's Contract". * Meet Krizz ar Cheroz, grandson of Sah'togar's and Shol-yunali Candidate. He looks odd because his right side is near-completely paralyzed since birth. * The manticore is Cheroz's soulsister. She's rather protective. * Yay Shadowrose receiving medical care? Maybe? As for the good news: The conclusion of Strangleweed's Contract will start running in 2009. I cannot guarantee any specific date, nor that it will end in 2009, but I will complete drawing it and upload the entire storyline for updating. Merry Christmas! :D Wednesday, June 14 Strip #235 The discussion about 'Thrainem picking an Avatar has been brought up before. She still thinks it's bullshit, but she's tired of the whining, and will pick an Avatar if it makes the others happy. She does have a point in saying influencing mortals is what she does, though, and forcing her to give it up would end up amounting to stripping her of power almost completely. She doesn't influence people much, normally, but she goes around "tipping scales" in people's heads now and then. I think the fact Cretihno does have a tongue makes him even more creepy... Tuesday, June 13 Strip #234 If you have been observant since the beginning, you will know that this is Alioda speaking. Who that particular Avatar game-piece represents should be obvious. You'll also have noted that the Ronic piece was placed where it is now in the first page. All the pieces (practically) are pointy, because should something happen to make the nifty sparkly devine powers that keep them in place fail, the Gods can still continue their Game by simply sticking the piece into the surface they're playing on. I don't know if that would cause a horrible flood to account for all the muck neccesary to make their feet sink to the ankles. Alioda can be very much the mediator in the Gods' conflicts. I suppose it is because her children come in many shapes and she has to have experience dealing with many points of view. Plus a bit of lead mare mentality. I expect she isn't on quite as good terms with, say, Camael, seeing as he's the head of his pantheon, so he doesn't like it when she tries to decide things over his head. -Alexandra June 12th 2006 Strip #233 Enter Cretihno, the elemental God of Pain. He's really not as nasty as his job or appearance suggests -- there is a time and place where pain is justified, and Cretihno generally doesn't like people causing others undue pain. Since some of their interests cross over, he is on slightly better terms with Imphais than some of the Gods, but he does know when to step back. For all that they play a Game with select mortals' lives, the Gods all (generally) agree that meddling is a Bad Thing. Killing mortals in high positions for no apparent (to other mortals, that is) reason is very much classed as meddling. You may have noticed that all of the elemental Gods have equine forms. The reason for this is simple. Alioda granted them those forms, since having no body makes it difficult to influence the world much. The reason Shol-yunali has horns is that she also has an agreement with the Stag. -Alexandra Today's update Strip #232 Well, this technically concerns yesterday's strip as well, as I didn't see the point in over-explaining yesterday and ruining today's update. In the Game, the Gods have two major kinds of game-markers. One is the miniatures of people and creatures, that we saw on the first page. These are (generally, there are a few exceptions) Avatars -- though maybe not in the traditional sense of the word. They're simply people chosen as game-pieces by a God and whom that God can influence more directly than most mortals. The other kind of markers are the Entities. These can be a source of holy power on the mortal plane, such as a temple (also seen on page 1), but they can also be some kind of embodiment of divine power. In this case, it is Cazhar (Death), which is able to act on its own, but which also can be controlled to a greater extent than an Avatar by Imphais. These markers are pin-shaped, with some kind of icon on the pin to show what they symbolize. In some cases, the markers can also be used to show where something will be later. There are also Gods who can influence mortals, such as 'Thrainem. She has chosen to not have any Avatars in order to more easily maintain this freedom, as well as because she doesn't feel she has gained any dedicated followers in her few years. Virtually no moves become reality until their markers are placed or moved on the board. There are exceptions to this as well, but they don't apply here. The rules allow Gods to play out of turn if the situation demands it, such as to intervene in a direct threat towards their Avatars. This was not such a case. -Alexandra Strips #229 through #231 I was planning on getting back into doing these commentaries daily, but time somehow slipped between my fingers. Since this is an interlude, I won't bother doing this strip-by-strip, but rather do what I did on Monday and write some flowing notes and thoughts about the pages. I don't think I said this before, but these pages were done for my school yearbook. That will most likely not be available to most readers of this community, but it's still something worthy of notice, I think. 'Thrainem and Imphais have a running problem with one another. 'Thrainem is one of the newer Gods, having been a deity for somewhere around fifty years, and she was Imphais's only subject before then. Imphais has a way of getting on the other Gods' nerves, and thanks to meddling in Camael's (the head deity of the faerie pantheon) business, among other things, a whole lot of years ago, she's been banished until very recently, along with Camael's brother Cthava. The reason 'Thrainem and Imphais don't get along is largely that Imphais has been taking advantage of 'Thrainem's son, and 'Thrainem has a hard time completely letting go of her mortal life. Randomly, do note that 'Thrainem's right arm is metallic. It's pseudo-important. The other Gods in general don't have a lot of patience with Imphais, since she's somewhat paranoid and very ego-centric. In general not a very pleasant person. -Alexandra Today's comic Strip #228 Welcome to the first interlude! This takes place between the first and second storyline, but not in the mortal world. No, this is a short adventure in the immortal world! Dun-DUN! Here we see, in the background, left to right, Shol-yunali, a-deity-whose-name-is-incomprehensible-t Not much more to say, since this is a title page. Well, I could of course go through what kind of deities they are: * Shol-yunali is the Goddess of Wisdom/Thought in the elemental pantheon * The censored deity is the one Grace's Eyes (among others) follow * 'Thrainem is the Goddess of Heart, Fate and Fortune in the faerie pantheon * Uwghlock is the God of Animals in the faerie pantheon, and also the patron Goddess of vulpines * Alioda is the patron Goddess of equines * Imphais is the Herder of Death and Hope as well as the Goddess of Shapeshifters in the faerie pantheon. And a completely random fun fact: Ronic converted shortly before he became a mercenary -- before that he was a fairly high-ranking member of the clergy of the Goddess of Air, hence his clothing. -Alexandra The final strips of Intervention at White Sow have finally been uploaded, and I will now run a ten-page interlude, starting Monday. After that, there will be an additional week-long hiatus, and then the next storyline, Strangleweed's Contract will start running. Many apologies for the delay in finishing the first storyline, things suddenly got very stressful and I found myself putting it off. Other things coming up are a webpage redesign and update, maybe even with a *gasp* cast page, which I will get to after So, onto a couple of months' worth of commentary. Monday October 31st Strip #180 * Captain Tragash dislikes breaking confidences -- even when it's a long-dead person's secrets being told * Captain Tragash also doesn't particularly care for upsetting his uncle * Captain Tragash did, however, know his cousin better than just about anyone else ( It continues... ) Friday November 18th Strip #194 This strip was done by * Cue obscure references to Erigineean living-legends! * With so many angry eyes on him, Zvee loses his nerve... At least momentarily * Zvee does not, however, have much respect for authority, as long as that authority is human. Bet he gets that from Shadowrose. ( And yet more commentary... ) Wednesday January 4th Strip #227 * Ronic, however, will not be tricked. Come on, trying to trick a merc who's used to Mekiel and Tinsel is DOOMED to fail * Sah'togar knows Ronic will keep his word. He grew up with some of the reputable mercenary companies represented in White Sow. * Please ignore my really obvious (not to mention stupid) artistic mistakes in this strip. -Alexandra Intervention will be finished online -- I have the last number of pages drawn up, and started coloring them, but there's still a bunch of color work left to do, and I'm being eaten alive by deadlines. They'll be done and uploaded some time in April. Next storyline will start in June. What's more interesting for right now is that the first print volume of Paladins' Haven, consisting of about half of the White Sow storyline, is finished. It's been layouted by For only $5 US/40 SEK (plus shipping, which can be combined with my other fanzines), you get a snazzy 40-page spiral bound 'zine, with color covers and neatly layouted b/w comic pages. Yes. The other two fanzines, which I will post about since they contain Erigineea-related material, are: Maneki Kitsune $3/20 SEK A collection of comic shorts, from fall 2005 to just about now. Just a bunch of stuff I've done, ranging very much in tone, style and medium. Also includes two comics starring Tales from Avelyon High 1 - Turning Point $3/20 SEK A short story collection with a number of illustrations, on the theme of "Loss". Features four short stories and a poem, two stories never previously shown off anywhere. These fanzines can be preordered now. All paid international orders will be shipped Monday or Tuesday next week, all domestic orders ship April 4. Otherwise, these fanzines will be available at SPX at Serieteket in Stockholm and later on through www.snowfox.se This entry will be crossposted with some modifications to -Alexandra First, a few notes on what's going on. I uploaded two more strips this morning, they're up and kicking now. The next strip isn't drawn by me, so I can't update more until my guest artist classmate gives me her take on the script I handed her. With some luck I'll be printing 200 copies of Intervention at White Sow in March or so, to be brought to the Swedish take on Small Press Expo in early April. Depends on funds, prices, and if the preparations get done by then. I'll get the storyline finished, whatever the case. There is also a brand spankin' new article about Paladins' Haven over at WikiFur. Go look, if that's your cup of tea. The comic may or may not be moved off the ComicGenesis servers in the relatively near future. Depends on what I can afford, how much webspace and transfer that gives me, and the phase of Venus. Let it be known, however, that I am not completely satisfied with how ComicGen treats me and my readers. It also seems like I accidentally managed to move the weekend. Note to self: Starting October 29th, shift all strips two days forward and run another update. And this means I'll have to write my commentary later, unless I want broken links. Ah, well... For now, there are recent strips that need commentary starting at http://paladin.comicgen.com/d/20051 -Alexandra |
