Epic Rants -- We Read Fic So You Don't Have To

For those that don't know me, hi! I'm

jane_elliot. I write fanfiction. I rec fanfiction. I critique fanfiction. I help people find fanfiction. I've created challenges to produce more fanfiction. And, occasionally, I rant about fanfiction.

In most of the above, I am supported by my partner in crime,

Since

the_yo_yo was donated to the Small Fandom Big Bang, I am now lacking an outlet for my 'why didn't I rec...' posts and I'm finding that I really, really need that outlet. For those who weren't following said posts, they were basically explantions as to why I didn't rec certain stories (usually wildly popular stories that people kept reccing to me). The purpose of said posts were to get folks to stop reccing certain stories to me (*cough*FreedomIsJustAnotherWordForNothingLeftToLose*cough*) but also for me to post constructive criticism of stories that could have been great, but for one reason or another...weren't. Why not just send the constructive criticism directly to the author(s)? Sadly, I've found that authors these days have become very defensive and interpret any suggestions as flames ('tell me what you think, as long as it's good!')

BTW? This is not true of me. I *adore* constructive criticism. Hell, I *prefer* it to positive comments. Positive comments make me feel good, but constructive criticism makes me a better author. So feel free to go off and pick my fic to shreds. I'll thank you for it:)

All of that said, there are some ground rules. First, I do endevor to make my posts entirely constructive, even when frustrated (which is often the case when I stumble on, say, unlabelled death fic). No matter what I think of a story, it is the result of a lot of hard work on the part of the author and I'm not about to piss on that. I'm just going to point out the aspects of the story that didn't work for me. It doesn't mean the story is bad. It doesn't mean that it isn't going to appeal to other readers. It just means that it didn't appeal to *me*.

As part of my determination to be respectful of the author, I will not tolerate any rudeness in the comments to these posts. Comments such as "I agree with you about this story because..." or "I didn't like this story because..." are fine. Comments like "You're right, this story sucks!" will be deleted/screened/whatever. If you want to post a comment like that, I suggest you take it to your own journal.

Finally, I have bowed to peer pressure and will be including links to the stories. Please do not ask me for more information. There's only so much work I'm willing to put into *not* reccing a story:)
