Hey guys! [Jul. 7th, 2009|02:24 pm]

Hey guys!  So, how was your Anthrocon?  Hopefully profitable all around!

I couldn't make it, my business partner wanted a 4th of July off for once, and since he's worked the last three for me, I figured I owed it to him.  We had a decently busy weekend, big 4th of July sale...  Much fun was had!

You?

Hi guys

My name is Valentina Caicedo and I run Mixedcandy the costume company with my husband Adam :). We have been in business for a few years and it has been a big roller coaster ride. Currently located in Florida and love it. Running our own business, and being able to juggle social life has been the biggest challenge. I am still trying to respect "me" time while not going crazy burning myself out.

I love being able to run something myself and being able to set my own rules. Being your own boss has a lot of perks and I would not want it any other way.

Yay for all nighters and con crunch ;).

Paper on Economics [Feb. 16th, 2009|02:53 pm]

rifkafox
Earlier today the big boss passed Economics for Real People to the entire company with some words of wisdom. He cautioned is that he did not feel we absolutely had to read the exposition, but felt that it would be helpful if one was interested in the current economic situation in the world.

Economics for Real People dives into the Austrian school of economics (the polar opposite of Keynesian economics).

Keynesian economics says that government intervention in the economy is necessary - the amazing stimulus package is an example of this. People who feel that the stimulus package is vital to the survival of the economy, and can prove it are usually Keynesians.

The Austrians feel that any government intervention harms the economy. I offer the first TARP failout last year as proof. The PDF linked above explains how government intervention in the free market causes harm. Yes keeping people employed is a good idea, giving GM more money so they can continue to destroy the US Auto industry is not.

As small business owners / operators we are going to have to navigate rough seas over the coming year or years. While I have yet to finish the document, I believe that knowing more of the how/why of the economy from a different perspective will give me a better insight as to what is about to happen - from those who have read the document, it's not going to be pretty.

What does this mean for us in the furry world? Well, from what I've read so far it explains a lot about how our customers think and act financially. Knowing what a potential customer may be thinking does not help the bottom line, but it does shed light on things.

That's my 2 cents for today.

Entreprefur Membership... [Feb. 16th, 2009|12:03 pm]

[Current Mood | excited]

It's crazy how time seems to get away from me sometimes... As I'm sure you can ALL relate to, eh?

[info]latinvixen02's recent post, commenting on something that [info]whiteyfawks had said, in addition to a separate post from [info]jillfennec, all made me stop to wonder why we're not having more such conversations HERE! Well... Heck, ANY such conversations here!

We're all, I think in very similar situations, dealing with the same economy and in many cases, the same customers! I think that, we all have plenty to share and plenty to learn from each other...

SO... First off... Let's see about upping our membership numbers! I don't want you to make a public post about the group, but if you know any furry business owners who aren't in here yet, send them an IM or email and ask them to join.  And if you've not done so yet, make a separate post introducing yourself and your business!

And... If you really want to help out, click HERE and check the "Someone posts a new entry to [info]entreprefurs " box in order to get an email when one of your fellow furry business owners makes a post... And comment! This will never be a massive community with hundreds of members. There aren't a ton of us out there and we really should be taking the time to get to know each other!

Advertising [Aug. 17th, 2008|12:34 pm]

Hello everyone.

I has gotten so quiet here...
My question is: How much of your income do you regularly spend on advertising?
What kind of advertising works for you?
Do you target a specific clientele or just put it out for everyone to see?

Insurance [Jun. 3rd, 2008|02:45 pm]

suranfox
Hello everyone,

somehow it seems like I am the only one posting here anymore?
I have one question: How many of you have an insurance for
their goods?
I have my stock in the -2nd basement-level and the strong
rain yesterday reminded me, that I really should get an
insurance against flooding soon. (That place was flooded
once a few years back before I moved in.)

Dollar hitting 1/1.6Eur [Apr. 23rd, 2008|01:40 pm]

suranfox
Hello everyone,

I am curious. How is everyone here affected by the continuing breakdown of the dollar and the continuing decline of the US-economy (if meassured in gold or wares instead of USD)?

For me it gets cheaper every day to import my wares from the US but it has become nearly impossible to sell anything to them.
If entering the US had not become as unfriendly as it is now, the US-conventions would start to look really interesting.

So I guess it's my turn...

I'm Suran and I operate the shop on YiffyToys.de since February 2006.
I learned my lessons to not rely on drop-shipping or backorder due to
distributors being way too often out of stock or discontinuing products
right when you need them. Also there where of cause the products, I
was not able to show at conventions. Thus I had to turn away customers
who would have purchased some, had they been able to examing them fist.
So I am keeping my own stock in some huge rented room, complete with
freight elevator, loading ramp, work tables and photo area. This may have
been slower to get going but in the long run, all that counts is customer satisfaction.

I've been present on all major (and a lot of minor) european conventions
since then. However up to now I was not present at US-conventions, simply
because of the expenses and biometrics (airport) involved and the little you
can show without violating minor-protection -rules on the conventions.

I won't go into the issue of the actions of TigWolf and JägerFuchs here. All of
it is documented on http://furry.wikia.com/wiki/YiffyToys already.

It was hard work to get this up this way but the shop is doing well enough
and I'm having a good time running it. As mentioned in my comments on
the other post, I am doing all my legal work, customs-papers and taxes
myself. Once you have done it a first time, it's actually a no-brainer. Not
as scary as many people make it to be. Things only tend to get complicated
when you have to deal with the rules of countries, who's official language
you do not speak. Like with my preparations for the sales on CesFur lately,
where I had to look up the child-protetion rules and regulations for requirements
on condoms and lubes, ... . Luckily compliance with local taxes and customs
where no issue here, as I am an EU-citizen.

Greetings, Welcome to Monday... [Mar. 31st, 2008|08:38 am]

[Current Music |General Morning Stuffs]

After a relaxing weekend of visiting friends and enjoying a bit of downtime working on home things the new week starts. Opening the doors and watching the guys and girls come in is always nice, good mornings are exchanged and questions about ones weekend invariably pass in conversation as people begin getting set out on their tasks for the day. Coffee was required this morning as with every morning but today i got an early start so  no need for the second trip offsite even tho its nice to take the time to travel off, i guess i can be a little more productive because of that. The beam of doom (wood arch) got an answer today via email this weekend......   appears that the reengineering will cost 1500 to 2000 for the engineer to  assess the fix that was proposed. replacement, still steep, but not as much as originally quoted, 5850. Roll with it i guess, thinking that the engineers costs are the better deal, now to get an independent to  run the stresses and such for it. My carpenter has learned an important lesson of listening to what i ask him to do, couldve avoided this if he had just listened and left this to when i was inhouse so i couldve watched the processes before anything got cut. I am angry at him for assuming he could proceed with it, i have told him as much, now we all wait because the job cant be finished until this is resolved. Beyond the delay, no billing can be done meaning a large sum of money is in limbo...  Erf...  Its things like this that make vacations worth it. 50 more days! I am counting down the days to RCFM. Still, its a good day, the sun is out, everyone is keeping busy, and in the big picture, all is well.  On a personal note, my personal project is all but finished, i have a different offroad truck now! The 4th of July trip will see me wandering the trails in style,, with air conditioning even! My poor old datsun will miss out on  running hills forevermore. The '69 datsun was neat, but creature comforts of a '94 won the battle. I like comfort i find.

  Enough of my  ranting *wags*

Friday,, and now work tomorrow!! YAY! [Mar. 28th, 2008|08:37 am]

[Current Mood | bouncy]
[Current Music |Ambient]

Greetings all, another week has come and is about to expire, and i dont have to work tomorrow! This is a rare occurance, something almost alien to me *grins* i think iwill go junkyarding, a sinful passion of mine, go out and wander thru the yards, se what gems i can find to tuck away into my garage, things that  someday i might need  :)  Withthe safety committee all set up, now we implement the programs that OSHA wants us to keep on file, i am so happy that there is a secretary here, she took on the legwork of the program. I walk thru and see piles of paper and booklets strewn across her desk... gah,,, yes,, i am happy she decided she wanted to do it. Crane inspections every shift, forklift and tool inspections, i had no idea there was so much to meeting the requirements. Everyone in the shop seems content and happy knowing that they have a say in safety. I am really happy to see that everyone takes pride in their workplace. Life is good, and even when things go berzerk and seem to be a bit out of control, i wouldnt change what i have here. Oh, the miscut arch, no word yet, cant rush an engineer in his decisions, learned that  quite a while ago......   so still waiting, but have a good feeling, if it takes more than a day, they are seriously considering my proposed fix. I gave up stressing on it yesterday, what becomes of it happens, just roll and adapt.  Its time to go check on the second and third job in production now out on the floor. I wonder what my workers would think if they knew in my mind i am wagging my tail, enjoying a cool morning, thinking of what all needs to be done, and happy that i can have what i do.

   Everyone, enjoy your weekend!

[Current Mood | anxious]

Another day starts with the usual meeting of everyone in the shop. 2 days ago a big timber arch was cut wrong by one of my workers and i am stil waiting on a call from 2 engineers for the project to contact me on my proposed fix for this. Its a 105 foot long glulam arch, 30 inches tall and 8-3/4 inches thick, something that will set back my project by 3 weeks if i need to have a new one made. The human error syndrome strikes again!  I find i walk around alot when things like this happen, waiting is the worst, i just want the phone call now, be it bad or good about the issue so i can  get things on my end rolling to remedy this. Beyond that, things are going well, had my first official safety meeting yesterday also, OSHA regs say there are enough workers that we need a written plan and committee that meets to make sure everything is good. Was nice, went out to lunch with  the others that are working on it with me, today  the first meeting with the workers happens, i expect chaos *grins* its cool being able to just talk with the guys and hear what they think about things that are going on. Well, off to pace a bit more, try to get a plan set out for the next week to keep everyone busy. Perhaps i will send off my one worker to get certified for welding, i think hes to that point now, i have been teaching him the basics and hes pretty good at it. I think he would really like to have a cert card, its a marker in a way  for him to lok at and feel proud of, and something that he can use if he ever decides he wants to move on, which i hope he doesnt, good workers are hard to find. Thats why when a big mistake is made you stay calm and try to figure out what happened so it doesnt happen again. No sense in being irrational even tho you can feel the pit of your stomach tighten when you see alot of money just fly away. One needs to know that mistakes arent on purpose, and your workers do their best they can for you. Sometimes owners fail to offer enough guideance at times, this time i failed and i am paying the price. Next time, a better shop blueprint will be warranted, and (even tho they hate it) me looking over their shoulder until i am happy everything is right on an 8000 dollar pice of wood.      Until later everyone, Rottie

Just wanted to say hello and thanks for letting me join this community. I own a part of a timber framing company and was told about this group be a mutual friend. I think its great to be able to have a forum where ideas and thoughts can be shared between furs that are, and are considering  starting something they can call their own in the business world. Its a journey that can be trying, but the rewards are great when you finally find your niche in the world. enough of my ramblings, Thanks again for  allowing me to join. Rottieboy

Hello everyone,

Thank you for approving my request to join Entreprefurs. My name is Jaeger Fuchs and along with owning Yiffy Toys (www.yiffytoys.com) with my mate TigWolf , I also own Horse On Course (www.horseoncourse.com) which caters to equestrian equipment/supplies.

Both on-line businesses were created in November, 2007 after recently leaving my job as an independent sales representative in the equestrian industry for 18 years. I am hoping to successfully transition from my heavy travel schedule, to be home with my mate more and apply my business skills to build our online businesses.

To kick start these businesses, I have been aggressively adding new vendors/products and have began setting up at conventions/events to show case our product lines. If anyone has any further suggestions in helping me get these businesses off the ground and better known, I would appreciate your input.

Warm Regards,
-Jaeger Fuchs

I've always wanted to top Woody, and now I have! Hi down there ;)

Good idea for a group, seems a small peerage in the fandom who try the whole 'go it alone' thing.

Hi, my name is Steven Scharf, aka WhiteyFawks. I am the owner of Arend Studios, a mascot and design studio in Vancouver BC. I've been building costumes and props for 10+ years now, and after moving to BC, began to rely on it as my sole income (company that hired me for environmental engineering went tits up). Incorporated in Jan 2004 (Woo, we turned 4!) we're a team of 5 people now. Run as a cottage industry modern, we are actually 4 individual studios, headed up by 'Arend Central' in my home ^.^

Still a lot of sleepless nights worrying about this that and the other, but I wouldn't ever have it any other way. Entrepreneurialismus (is that even a word yet? Can it be?) is the way for me. *wag wag*

I've been tossing the idea of starting this community for a while now...  Because although I know a few fellow business-owners within the fandom, there's no central hub that I know of, where we can all come together and ask questions or share advice.  So, I figured I'd give this a shot, and start networking.

My name is Tim Wood (But everyone, furry or otherwise calls me Woody) and I own a comic book store here in Chicago.  Yes, it's a brick and mortar storefront, not an online store.  My business partner worked at a book store in a neighboring town which had a decent number of subscribers and the owners decided to pursue other interests.  So, upon talking to the subscribers we learned that the majority of them lived in our neighborhood and were traveling to this store because nothing existed locally...  So, although the time-line was more expedited than we'd have liked, we decided to fill the need and timed our opening to coincide with this other store's closing.  We've since moved to a larger space in a more heavily-trafficked area, and things are going well.  We're not to the point where we're paying salaries and making a profit, but the store's easily paying for itself.

What about you?
