-- Michael Piller, "Star Trek" veteran and co-creator/executive producer of USA Network's hit series "The Dead Zone," died early Tuesday at his Los Angeles home after a long battle with cancer. He was 57.
Before co-creating "The Dead Zone" with his son Shawn, Piller was head writer on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," leading the show to a best drama Emmy nomination in 1994, the first for a syndicated series.

He went on to co-create the following two "Trek" installments, "Deep Space Nine" and "Voyager." Both series ran for seven seasons.

In 1998, Piller wrote and co-produced "Star Trek: Insurrection," the ninth installment in Paramount Pictures' successful Star Trek feature franchise.

08.23.2005
Brock Peters
Reports are coming in today that Brock Peters ("Joseph Sisko" & "Admiral Cartwright") has passed away from pancreatic cancer. He was 78.

Peters gained fame as Tom Robinson, the man accused of rape in the classic 1962 film "To Kill a Mockingbird." His other early films include "The L-Shaped Room," "Carmen Jones" and "Porgy and Bess." Star Trek fans will remember Peters for two roles; as Admiral Cartwright in "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" and "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" and as Joseph Sisko, Benjamin Sisko's New Orleans-based father who ran his own creole restaurant. http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/news/article/13354.html

Rest in peace...

some finale thoughts.

so i just watched the last three episodes -- i saved them up until i could watch all three at once. and i didn't really want to watch them right after the actual finale aired, because i didn't really want to admit that it was done.

first off: i admit it, i was one of the fans who got bored and wandered off. i didn't watch much of the third season at all. but i came back this year, primarily because i acquired a tivo and, what the hell, i didn't have to set the VCR anymore, and if i didn't watch it, it wasn't like it was going to take up tape space or anything. and to my surprise, it didn't seem to suck quite so much anymore. naturally it got cancelled.

some random thoughts on the finale, none of which i suspect will surprise anyone:

it was kind of a cute gimmick to have riker and troi back, the sets were nicely done, and it was kind of a little bit like seeing old friends again ... but ... yeah, gimmick. kind of a cheesy gimmick, even. and i haven't seen that episode of TNG since forever so i had no clue what they were yammering on about. so, all together, that was nice and pointless, beyond being nostalgic. which i can get from watching my TNG DVDs. thanks, stupid writing team who made me stop watching in the first place.

and, killing trip off so pointlessly (hello? sharan even said that their ship wasn't fast enough to catch enterprise! did you forget that you wrote that line, what, five minutes after writing it?) and after he had a personality transplant in the corridor, apparently? i feel like that particular move was a sucker punch to the gut (that would be when troi spills the beans) followed by a kick to my kidneys (when he actually dies), just to see the expression on my face.

and after the pointless but painful since you so carefully set us up death of trip, WHY THE HELL DID WE NOT SEE THE SPEECH? WHY, WHY, WHY? you were short on time, and i needed the data raincheck joke instead? the "these are the voyages" voiceover at the end -- i got the bloody point! let me hear archer's damn speech! were you just too lazy to actually write it? you can't have thought that fans would be happy to miss it, can you?

i haven't read many other folks reviews yet -- primarily since i was avoiding spoilers, as i hadn't watched it until tonight. i heard, though, that jolene was displeased about it. gosh, i can't imagine why.

i mean, i'm not even all that huge into trek fandom, and i think i would still happily buy and wear to work t-shirts which advocate violence against berman and braga due to the massive suck of this finale. -- i think a nice flat smack is not entirely undeserved, since that's kinda how i feel like they treated me.

argh. especially as contrasted with 'terra prime,' which i thought was a pretty good episode ... then they followed that with ... just such dreck!

i think this shall be filed next to my quantum leap fannish discontent, wherein i deny that the final episode happened: the final episode was so unsatisfying (actually, sort of betraying) that it gets erased, and the second-to-last becomes the last. it verges on taking this stuff too seriously, i admit, but ... what else can you do when the writers are evidently complete jackasses? i liked enough of the shows preceding that i'll probably end up buying at least several if not all of the seasons on DVD, and shit like that stands to just ruin the entire series run by leaving a bad taste in your mouth. so, yeah. last episode: to me, it officially never happened.

bah.
