We made a trip to NYC on Apr. 26-27 and words can't quite capture the marching band insanity that was Folly Day! so we bring you pictures and video! it was a glorious day roaming around Prospect Park (usually lost) and playing music. highlights included playing Happy Birthday & Sesame Street to a little girl's bday party, leading an entourage into the forrest on a narrow trail, marching into a fence, climbing over said fence (while playing!) much to the confusion of joggers on the running path on the other side, and, of course, the rumble!

Folly Day - RMO Advances
Originally uploaded by LarimdaME

This is a great shot of one of the most fun moments of the day. As each band wandered around the park playing, when you encountered another band you were supposed to "borrow" some of their members. what this turned into was a marching band show down. in this picture we have just exited a tunnel, and from the hill above RMO came down the path at us. what followed was a blazing free for all as we battled song for song. they had a bigger band, more drummers and choreographed dancers, yet we fought valiantly and refused to concede. the pinnacle of this 'contest' was when they played their crowd pleasing standard Push It, complete with dance routine, and they perhaps expected us to give in. ;) But no! We retorted with our version of Sexy Back, and several of them nearly peed their pants.

convergence
Originally uploaded by threadseven

and lest we not forget one of the most astounishing parts of the whole event, The Super Secret Attack Band, which must be seen to be believed! Watch as they mount their final assault on the Allied forces of ENSMB, RMO & HMB

Attack of the Top Secret Attack Band!
<lj-embed id="10" />..

here are a few of the pics we took on flickr

what an awesome day! thanks so much NYC crew for inviting us down!!!

-ENSMB
Thank you for being a part of our fund raiser and supporting our cause!

Our huge auction and fund raiser was such a tremendous event that I'm just now recovering, and sitting down to document how it went.

We really can't fully explain how wonderful it was to have so many people; fans, friends and strangers alike, come to show their support, cheer us on and give their money to help our cause. All of the band and the performers had a fabulous time mingling and frolicking throughout the night, and it was very nice to spend some time chatting with the people that came to see us perform and believe in what we're doing. We're still tallying the exact numbers, but we're estimating that we made about $4500! wow! that really is so close to the goal we had for this, and we're so gratefully to have made that much.

There's so many people that helped make this possible and I know if i tried to thank everyone individually here, i'd most certainly miss some. if only because there was so much happening, i'm not even sure who did what.

Heaping truck loads of gratitude and respect go to bbbsg who did a monumental amount of work in making this happen. while i handled the performance aspects and did a few odds and ends, she did nearly everything else. To list everything little thing she did would be a huge task, so you can just be certain that most of what you saw there was because she made it happen.

A few more heaping truckloads of thanks go to zzbottom and library_sexy of Paulo Adams Auction Services. Without them, we probably would have made about $100 on this auction. They helped tremendously and gave so much of their time and attention to this. They are incredibly efficient and well organized, as well as being wonderful to work with. They truly were fundamental in making this thing a success.

Individual baskets of of acknowledgment and thanks go out to everyone that volunteered their time before and at the auction to help us out in every way possible. There was such a flurry of work going on leading up to this and so many of you helped make that happen. As i said, I can't name you all, but please know that I sincerely appreciate everything that you did, even if i didn't necessarily see you doing it

Pretty pretty boxes filled with appreciation go out to each and every one of you that donated to our fantastic collection of auction items. it is you that actually brought us the money that we made, and we absolutely can not express enough how much it means to us that you gave of yourselves, your work and your talents to come to our aid.

One last special thank you goes out to DJ Ethyl Cannes, a.k.a. daft, for valiantly providing an excellent selection of music throughout the night. we couldn't have asked for a more perfect accompaniment to our event and I personally loved the atmosphere that her sonic selections created for the night. (for the curious, her playlist can be found here)

The silent auction was filled with an amazing array of items from music lessons to jewelry to amazing food and much more. i still can't believe that so many talented and successful artists and artisans contributed their wares freely to help us raise some much needed money. It is truly flattering and a great honor to be shown that kind of love from other artists. In the whirlwind of activity, I didn't get around to see everything that was up for auction, but I was particularly delighted at the ENSMB original hand crafted storage tin (complete with chocolates!), and the custom made chocolate truffles by Truffleupagus which consisted of flavors inspired by ENSMB. if we're inspiring anything that delicious, then we're definitely doing something right. ;)

After the silent auction closed, we moved on to the live auction where there was intense bidding over some hot items, again i didn't catch everything, but the home brewing class, the cupcake of the month club (one dozen every month for a year!), and a home prepared gourmet meal by Tarts & Carafes seemed to be in high demand, and for good reason!

The items gone and people's money spent, it was time for full on entertainment! It's been quite sometime since we've taken the stage for a crowd that is there solely to see us. We love being a part of great events and sharing the stage with other fabulous bands, but there's definitely something very confidence boosting and heartwarming about performing for an audience entirely of fans and friends. All the love in the room fueled the band to new heights of exuberance, and we were delighted to have a great array of circus performers with us that night. not only did we have many familiar faces, but we also had several people that have been trying for over a year to play with us, as well as people that traveled far to take part in this performance. Mark Alexander of Mortal Beasts & Deities deserves special note for making the longest trek, traveling over three hours, and making the most costume changes (i think it was 4, but i may have missed one or two).

I'm always amazed at what goes on in front of us on stage (pirates in boxes! contortion on broken glass! beguiling belly dancing!) It was a really invigorating set to play filled with some gifted performances. Throughout the night as the band and performers flitted and frolicked around the room, i could see in people's faces and movements that they were into what we were doing, yet so many seemed to be holding back. we played the last song in our set, but then we decided that everyone deserved one final tune. After asking the crowd if they did in fact want another song, I said it was contingent on them dancing and giving back some of the jubilation that we had been giving them. As we launched into the last song, i was fully unprepared at the bacchanal like revelry that ensued! people danced, jumped and ran around like crazy people. despite having to dodge flailing bodies and dancing stilters in close quarters while playing, it was an absolutely ecstatic feeling to have everyone there in a great swirling mass. this is really why we do what we do.

after all that, i still feel like i missed so much of the amazingness that occurred. Thank You Thank You THANK YOU!!! please know that everyone that participated in whatever way, did their part to help us lay the foundation for our group to become a beautifully rambunctious and joyous force in Boston and the world!

You can read an article written by the interviewer who talked to so many of you that night here at the Somerville Journal blog.

Here's a video interview taken at the event. (just listen to that music provided by daft!)
<lj-embed id="11" />

and finally here are some pictures of just some of the insanity that occurred
photos by qwrrty
photos by moominmolly
photos by magickcat

an update on current developments

i feel like we mostly use this community to give show info, so i thought i'd give y'all some actual content for a change.

the band is currently taking a brief hiatus from live performance to work on new songs, but worry not, we'll be back on the scene after the new year. we plan to continue supporting community events through performance, as well as putting together eclectic shows with other local bands. we're always on the look out for new performance opportunities, so if you have leads or info on any, please get in touch with us. thus far we've been a bit unorthodox in how we get our gigs, and we've been able to do that because of the word-of-mouth ringing endorsements of the people that enjoy our music (that would be you!).

in addition to working on new music, we've also begun work on a large scale circus show for this spring. a great many details are still getting worked out, but our goal is to take the success of our debut show last spring and build something even more spectacular. this show is going to be a conceptually and aesthetically unified story based around the music of ENSMB and featuring an ensemble cast of performers.

to start building this cast, we ran several rounds of auditions this past weekend and will wrap up with some more this week. i have to admit to being very excited by the talent and enthusiasm of the people that want to be a part of this. this city is full of extremely creative and gifted performers, and i can't wait to see what develops as we put them on stage together.

part of the purpose of our endeavor is share the power of self expression and creativity, and to show that everyone has that power. toward this end over the coming months, we'll be putting out calls for participation and assistance in pulling off what is going to be a splendidly challenging circus show. every person that contributes is going to help make this thing that much more spectacular and rewarding, so we strongly encourage you to jump in and get involved when the time comes.

that's what we're up to now! thank you so much for supporting what we do. every hoot and holler, every stomping foot and every kind word shared after a show mean a lot to us, and help us believe in each new and crazy thing we undertake. :D

Auditions for Circus, Dance & Theater Performers

Calling all freaks! Actors, dancers, aerialists, contortionists, jugglers, acrobats, puppeteers, hula-hoopers, stilt walkers, acrobalancers, object manipulators, sideshow spectacles -- if you have a talent and a desire to perform, we want to see it!

The Madcap Rumpus Society is holding auditions for our spring show, to be performed in late April or May of 2008. The exuberant and talented Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band, a fifteen-piece circus band gaining notoriety on the Greater Boston scene, will accompany us. The profits from the show, which come from a weekend run of 2-3 performances, will provide compensation to be shared among the cast and crew, as well as help to build a foundation for future productions.

We are looking for soloists & groups to create acts to fit into our show's framework, as well as ensemble members to work intensively as a group to create that framework. All performers should be able to work both independently and cooperatively with other artists and under the supervision of the show’s creative directors. Ensemble members will rehearse twice a month until March/April, when rehearsals will be held more frequently.

We are particularly seeking dancers, actors, and other theatrical & physical performers.
HONK! Fest pics and video

pics and video are just starting to make it on to the intarwebz, so here's a collection of what i found so far. some of these are ENSMB specific, but there's a lot of other performers too. to get the full effect of actually being there, you should surround yourself by at least 5 monitors, run slide shows on all of them and turn the volume up really loud.

ENSMB on youtube!

these are just of us, but there are a bunch from the other bands on youtube as well. this sequence actually does a good job of giving you the first person feel of being in the crowd.

(walk up) Dusty Bones
Bella Ciao
Flight of the Winged Serpent
(walk away) Mesecina

pictures!

honkfest.ning.com
HONK!
AltWheels Parade! This SAT!!!

"What's that? A parade, you say? But I thought you were a STATIONARY marching band?"

I'm sure you might find yourself thinking these exact things...but worry not! ENSMB won't let a silly little thing like labels stand in our way of bringing boisterous mayhem to the streets of Boston!!! And this time you can join in the calamity!!!

This Sat. we'll proudly be taking part in the AltWheels Festival happening at Boston City Hall Plaza, and we're helping to kick it off with out first parade ever. The parade begins at 10:30 on Prince St. in the North End at the Nazzaro Community Center Playground. We'll head down Hanover and through Faneuil Hall and do a few laps around City Hall Plaza. ENSMB will keep on playing right up until Noon no matter when the parade actually comes to an end!!! This doesn't have to be a spectator event though, as soon as you see us, you can jump right in and get freaky with the band in the streets! :D

Here's the best approximation we could come up with of the parade route. Be Warned! The actual parade route may vary.

Find out more about the AltWheels Fest

SPREAD THE WORD! Bring your friends Bring your family! Come out Sat. morning as we strike out on our very first parade! And you can be a part of it!!!

upcoming ENSMB shows! mark your calendars!

since i was chastised several times this weekend by people about not posting our shows farther in advance, i figured i'd give y'all some advance warning on our next few. in general though, our myspace page is the most up to date source of info, until we have a fully functioning website to call our own.

Sept 29 specific time TBA AltWheels festival

The 5th annual AltWheels festival, a grassroots volunteer initiative to promote green energy uses, is scheduled on September 28 & 29 at Boston's City Hall Plaza. The goal of the festival is to create a fun, artistic atmosphere for young and old. AltWheels, an all-volunteer initiative, has been in existence for 5 years. More and more, the festival is expanding its scope from transportation to energy and a holistic view of green technologies. Last year's events drew 20,000 visitors.

Oct 5-7 HONK! Fest

I'm so excited to be a part of one of the most glorious things i've ever seen. HONK! is a weekend celebration of activist street/marching bands, during which said bands descend upon Davis sq. to make a delightful ruckus. This year's lineup has doubled in size over last year's and includes bands from all over the country and several places in Europe. There will be a variety of happenings all weekend, but the meat & potatoes of the event will on Sat. Oct 6. All day long bands will be playing outdoors in and around davis sq., and then that night all of the bands will pack into the VFW for a giant concert. Trust me, unless you were at last year's fest, you've never experienced anything quite like HONK! check out there website for more details and a line up of all the amazing participants.
