we are spending all of next weekend in recording sessions in Gloucester, and we could use crash space so we don't have to trek back and forth from Boston. If you know of anyone willing to put up any number of musicians, please let us know. We are friendly and make good house guests. ;)

Last minute surprise ENSMB performance! we invite you to join us for a Memorial Day Picnic on Boston Common at 1:30 PM tomorrow! we provide the music and you bring the picnic! bring your family! bring your friends! bring strangers you meet on the way!

This will be a pretty casual affair with the band playing and hanging out throughout the afternoon. this picnic is BYO everything, so bring anything you'd like to have for a picnic; blankets, chairs, food, beverages, etc. we encourage you to do this potluck style and bring a bit to share, the band will be bringing some contributions to share with you, so you should return the favor. ;) or don't and just come frolic with us in the park.

we're not positive where we're going to set up to do this, as it depends on what other buskers are on the Common, but once we start playing we imagine we'll be pretty easy to find. :)

we hope to see you tomorrow!

anyone who loves us, loves HONK! it is a glorious celebration and all out musical extravaganza, and it's coming again this fall OCT 9-11 for it's biggest iteration yet! but in order for it to be a success, we need your help!

Please join us next Thursday at the HONK! Community Meeting, May 28th 7:00-8:30 PM at the West Branch Library in Davis Square. This meeting is a great way to learn about this year's festival and find out what little (or big!) things you can do to help out.

HONK! is community-driven action, and that means we need your help. The local love and support of our festival continues to grow, and we're certain that with your help, this year's festival will be the best yet.

Among other things, we need folks who are available before and during the festival to:
- promote the weekend's events
- make sure bands get where they're going
- house musicians
- feed, transport, wrangle, inform, collect donations and so much more!

This year is going to be a wonderful combination of the HONK! veterans you know and love, and exciting new bands coming to HONK! for the first time. there's an all women's band from New Orleans, bands from Italy and Amsterdam, new friends we made at HONK! West in Seattle, and some of your local favorites too. ;)

For HONK! updates visit http://www.honkfest.org

Please join us and be a part of this amazing experience! Hope to see you May 28th!

Every year we've been in existence, we've been delighted to be a part of JP's Wake Up The Earth Festival, and this year is no exception. It's a huge event with lots of great music and activities for kids and adults alike.

We'll be taking part in the parade which kicks off the festival at 11 AM at the monument on Center St. The parade makes it's way down Center St and ends up at the Stony Brook T station, so you can catch us anywhere along the route. If you're feeling extra festive, feel free to dance in the streets along the way with us!

But the day doesn't stop there! We'll also be performing later that afternoon at 4 PM at the Popular Theater stage in the Southwest Corridor Park (by Stony Brook T station), and we'll have the circus with us in full force. expect to see performances by the Madcap Rumpus Society, the Boston Hoop Troop and the Grasshopper Collective. it will be an astounding show, so come down, lay out on the grass and enjoy!

20 March 2009 @ 03:00 pm
ENSMB is proud to be a part of one of the most spectacular vaudeville events Boston has ever seen. Join us tonight for...

THE ODDITORIUM!!!

An evening filled with sideshow delights and vaudeville theatre. For one night, the New England circus world comes out to play. After spending some quality time with the belly dancers, conjurors and the Human Floor, you'll walk out feeling not only totally normal, but perhaps a little bit boring. In fact, the show is so freaky that it's 18 and up only, we wouldn't want to scare the kiddies.

In addition to the amazing array of dancers, circus weirdos and sideshow freaks, you can also peruse the cabinet of curiosities that is EIGHT CORNER GLOBE!

EIGHT CORNER GLOBE works diligently to preserve the lost art of the American Dime Museum. They will be set up within the theatre for your freakish amusement. The cost to enter the museum is $3.00/person…a donation that will be used in the conservation and continuation of this unique collection. Be sure to check them out before the show & during intermission! This yet another way for you to unleash your wicked fascination!

For more information, visit their website

30 January 2009 @ 03:29 pm
there are some personnel changes in ENSMB in the coming months and we very much want to record a studio album before this happens. We've got a top notch engineer that loves our band, so that is the first big hurdle we've overcome. now the big issue is location, which is why i come to y'all in the hopes you might have some suggestions.

what we need is:
-a big room that can comfortably fit our band and gear. while an acoustically nice room is good, it is not essential due to how we will be recording. think dens, basements, large attics, (heated) garages, barns, warehouses, function rooms, church halls, theaters, etc.
-we need unfettered (or close to) access to it for about 48 hours. ideally we would come in on a Friday and set up everything (a 3-4 hour process), maybe get some recording done, then return sat. and sun. to record throughout the day and into the evening. we may need a 2nd weekend too, but let's plan for one to start off.
-noise needs to be tolerable, because, well, we're loud.
-outside noise needs to be negligible. nothing that is near major highways, trains or construction.
-preferably within an hour of metro boston
-free or super super cheap. our budget is almost nonexistent for this, and what money we do have needs to pay our talented engineer and fund the actual manufacture of CDs. we are more than willing to barter for this with free CDs, t-shirts, entry to shows, etc. we will entertain suggestions.

as you can see, this is a pretty tall order. if money were no object, this would not be a problem and we could rent out a place for the weekend. however, the cost of that is nearly astronomical, so it's my hope that through our massive network of interlocking communities someone somewhere out there has a space that works that they will be gracious enough to let us use.

please help us by spreading the word on this, and letting us know about anything you think fits the bill

thanks!

Our last Bummer & Lazarus performance at the Lily Pad was such a hit with everyone that you demanded we do it again, so we are! This time we will be creating an improvised score for the 1920 German Expressionist classic, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

This film is an intense journey that follows the deranged Dr. Caligari and his prognosticating somnambulist, Cesare. it is dark and bizarre, and if you've never seen it before you're in for a real treat! We're exited to share with you our musical impression of this influential and inspirational film.

Greetings and Glorious Wintertime to you all!

things have been a bit quiet here on the ENSMB front, as you may have noticed. but worry not! we are hard at work on several special events and performances for 2009!!!

as the year is coming to a close, we sincerely want to thank each of you for making 2008 an incredibly kick ass year for ENSMB. with Mischief in the Machine, not only did we put on the biggest and most dramatic homegrown circus performance Boston has ever seen, but we also expanded the ENSMB family to include a lot more wonderful and talented people. A lot of love was put into that show, and thanks to you it was all returned to us ten-fold by making the show a huge success. that alone would have made 2008 great, but thanks to you, every single show we played was filled with a tremendous amount of fun and exuberance.

and there were some really great shows! from HONK! Fest to RiverSing, from What the Fluff? to Folly Day, from the Wake Up the Earth Festival to our amazing shows with the Army of Broken Toys...and so many more. we are so grateful for all the people who we played with this year, every guest musician, every band we shared a stage with and everyone in our HONK! family.

we truly appreciate everyone that comes to see us play, that tells their friends about us, that takes pictures or shoots videos, and that stops to say hi at our shows. In appreciation, we've got a special holiday gift for you! We now have available for free download one of our shows from 2008 in it's entirety. This is TWO FULL SETS of music all for you! We heartily encourage you to download it and share it with everyone you know.

May 4, 2008 Emperor Norton's Stationary Marching Band at The Nave as part of Boston Jazz Week

Through the link above, you can download individual songs, the entire show, and put a widget player on your blog or myspace. spread the love! share it with everyone!

thanks again everyone! we look forward to rocking out with you and filling your life with more circus in 2009!!!

Last Mon. & Tues. ENSMB had the distinct pleasure of making an appearance at the "Who Killed Amanda Palmer?" shows at the Paradise. When they launched the tour, a call was put out for horn players/sections in the hopes that they could find some in each city they were playing in. Apparently throughout Europe and so far in the US they haven't had much luck, at which point ENSMB swooped in to save the day!

Miss Palmer's tour is quite the artistic and logistical endeavor, and with the help of our good friends the Army of Broken Toys and Vermillion Lies, both of whom were on the tour and in the trenches, we made our way into being a part of the spectacle.

This is every one of the musicians that were a part of the Amanda Palmer shows on Mon. & Tues at the Paradise, including a chunk of ENSMB, the Army of Broken Toys, Vermillion Lies, the Builders & the Butchers, and, of course, Amanda Palmer.

It was a stunning experience and a veritable extravaganza of entertainment...for not one but TWO nights! oh Boston, we're just too good to you. )

all in all, it was a spectacular two nights and we were delighted to have the WKAP tour crash through our lives! apologies to those of you that missed it, but fret not. Amanda called us "the biggest and most pleasant surprise of the tour so far", and is interested in doing something a bit more elaborate with us (ah the intoxicating power of a stationary marching band!) so keep your appendages crossed, and we'll see what's in store for the future!

Come see Bummer & Lazarus play an improvised film score to this 1920 silent horror classic!

Bummer & Lazarus is an improvisational offshoot of crazed musicians from ENSMB that formed around an interest in sonic textures, rhythmic complexity and musical exploration. Drawing inspiration from a wide variety of sources, we utilize an array of instrumentation that is driven by found-object percussion and eclectic noise. We've performed in the past as musical support for our good friends and circus sideshow group Oddchild Uprising, but now for something NEW! On Friday Nov. 21 at the Lily Pad, we will be performing an improvised film score!

For this performance, we will be playing for the 1920 German silent horror film, The Golem: How He Came Into the World. The film tells the tale of the legendary creation of the golem, a mythic creature from Jewish folklore. In 16th-century Prague, a Jewish rabbi creates a giant creature from clay, called the Golem, and using sorcery, brings the creature to life in order to protect the Jews of Prague from persecution. Unfortunately, his evil assistant manages to take control of the Golem for his own purposes, and finally has it kidnap the rabbi's beautiful daughter. However, the Golem--which had been given human emotions by the rabbi--finally rebels against the assistant's mistreatment.

There's fire, magic, prophetic visions, death, violence, love, lust and a powerful creature made out of clay! This one has something for everybody!

Bummer & Lazarus is:
Handsome Chuck
Grantley Smith
Richard Tarantino
Ry Strohm-Herman
Sara Honeywell

as you may or may not know CA passed Prop 8 last week, which will amend the state constitution to restrict the definition of marriage to a union between a man and a woman, and thus eliminates the right of same-sex couples to marry in the state of CA. this Sat. in cities all around the country people will be rallying at protests to demonstrate their opposition of it's passing.

The Boston rally will be happening tomorrow from 1:30-4 at Boston City Hall/Gov't Center and ENSMB will be there to add our own raucous voice to the many others that are appalled at the passing of this proposition. Please come out to show your support!

We're super excited to be headlining a superb lineup this Thursday Oct. 23 at TT the Bear's in Central Sq. Please come out to support us for this one because a strong showing on our part will lead to bigger and better opportunities for us. we promise to rock you!
