I'm going to apply to graduate school for Literature/English. I've been taking GRE classes, rewriting my essays and researching schools. I've read "America's Best Graduate Schools" and I've done some googling. But I am having a hard time finding what I want from a grad program.

Can anyone suggest schools that have a option to specialize in poetry and poetics? Or at least that have a few good courses that involve the study of poetics (and that is NOT an MFA program)?

I mentioned this on the prior post, but I highly recommend asking around at [info]applyingtograd if you haven't all ready. They're very helpful, and chances are you'll get a few suggestions.

SUNY Buffalo seems to have an awesome poetics program (especially if you are interested in contemporary American poetry).

I second that. An MFA classmate of mine did his Ph.D. at SUNY-Buffalo. Their Electronic Poetry Center has brilliant resources -- I think it's just epc.buffalo.edu.

thirding this recommendation. buffalo's program is extremely...eccentric? It's definitely a "think-outside-of-the-box" place, which works well for my students.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison has all their reading lists posted online, for all your needs. You can use that as a baseline at just about any school, I'm sure.

My boyfriend is applying with the same interests. You might want to look at....

SUNY Buffalo
Chicago
UPenn (not Penn State...though I actually know nothing about Penn State, so this isn't a vote against them)

on ratings: the US news and world report ratings are deeply, deeply flawed. It is useful in that it gives you a list of names to start researching, but you really don't want to relay on them in choosing a school. I'd recommend starting with your own interests firsts. Who wrote the books/articles that you found fascinating? Who has the most interesting ideas? Where are they teaching? And sort of branching out from there.

NCR ranking ARE reputable, and they are due out in September this year, but they've been delayed for...oh, the past 5 years or so, so I wouldn't hold your breathe waiting for them.

Talk to your professors. They would probably be able to give you a list of places to consider.

How theoretically-inclined are you? I do a bit of poetics, but mostly from the theoretical angle...and I'd be happy to offer a bigger list if your interests overlap there as well. (Buffalo, for example, is very theory-heavy...in addition to poetics, they have a pretty impressive program in psycholanalytic theory, queer theory, etc...and their comp lit department has a lot of very good deconstructionists)
