(Especially the Ender and Shadow series!)

How were you first introduced to Orson Scott Card? What was the first OSC work you read and when did you read it?
The first OSC book I read was Ender's Game, in high school, when I had to read it for a book report. I ended up loving it, and it started me reading other OSC books!

List all the OSC works you have read.

The Ender Saga
Ender's Game
Speaker for the Dead
Xenocide
Children of the Mind

The Shadow Saga
Ender's Shadow
Shadow of the Hegemon
Shadow Puppets
Shadow of the Giant

First Meetings

What is your favorite OSC work? Why?
Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow, because it's very interesting to see the same story from completely different perspectives, and Shadow of the Hegemon because of Petra's very cool and hilariously sarcastic attitude!

Which OSC work have you not read yet, but especially want to?
Ender in Exile (once it's released!)

What other authors or books do you enjoy?
Michael Crichton, Dan Brown (everything EXCEPT Da Vinci Code), Steve Berry, Anne McCaffrey (especially the Dragonrider, Brainship, and Tower and Hive series), Madeleine L'Engle (A Wrinkle in Time and the other "Time Quintet" books), and of course, the original Nancy Drew mysteries by Carolyn Keene, and the Animorphs series by K.A. Applegate!

Anything else you would like to add?
I'm an anime and manga fan. That's about it.

Crossposted from the OSC community. I liked the introductory "interview" they used so I went ahead and used it here. Glad to see there are so many Enderverse fans on LJ!

What's your name (real name or LiveJournal username--whichever you prefer)? Keely Graesser

How old are you? 28 and currently expecting a son, to be named Peter :)

Where are you? Dallas, TX

Why are you here? Because I love OSC's writings

How were you first introduced to Orson Scott Card? What was the first OSC work you read and when did you read it? Ender's Game - I read it in high school after a girl in my class who didn't read often recommended it as a book that had "changed her life". I thought that any book good enough to impact a "non-reader" must be worth my time.

List all the OSC works you have read

First Meetings
The Abyss
The Worthing Saga

The Ender Saga
Ender's Game
Speaker for the Dead
Xenocide
Children of the Mind

The Shadow Saga
Ender's Shadow
Shadow of the Hegemon
Shadow Puppets
Shadow of the Giant

The Homecoming Saga
The Memory of Earth
The Call of Earth
The Ships of Earth
Earthfall
Earthborn

Also many of the Enderverse short stories on IGMS

Which OSC work have you not read yet, but especially want to? Ender in Exile! I can't wait until it comes out.

What other authors or books do you enjoy? Tolkein, CS Lewis, Heinlein, William Gibson, Asimov, Bradbury

Anything else you would like to add? I recently created a small shop for Peter Wiggin's fictional 2008 campaign if anyone is interested. As much as I continue to love this book series (I work in a bookstore, so I also get to enjoy it with many others on an almost daily basis), real-life has consumed the amount of time I have to do, well, anything consuming on the internet (for the most part). Well, the first time I heard of Ender was when I saw this and checked out the comments. It made me curious so, last year, I decided to buy the book. It was great! Made me cry at the end because I wanted to sympathize with Ender. I have to admit though, I'm not like Ender at all nor do I have his life. At first too, I hated Graff for putting strings on him and simply let him be alone during times like the showdown against Bonzo (I think it's the most tragic part of the story).

Then, I read Ender's Shadow and its two other sequels (I haven't read Shadow of the Giant properly yet). This time, instead of hating Graff, I now understood why he did so. I even laughed so hard regarding his and Sister Carlotta's/Bean's conversations. Also, the Shadow series is great. I love how Card made the Earth and its military forces move. The only thing I wanted to skip there were the mushy parts of Bean and Petra's relationship...

Whether it's from Ender's Game or from the Shadow Series, my favorite character is still none other than Peter Wiggin. Sure, he's an arse if I use that term but he's still a brilliant kid. I loved his idea about Locke and Demosthenes and I simply got excited when they were mentioned near the end of the novels during Bean's stay at Tactical School and after Ender's final "exam." I most especially laughed when Peter got humiliated in front of Bean and his parents in Shadow of the Hegemon. xD

Well, in any case, I love the series. I'm planning to finish Shadow of the Giant then, afterwards, I'm moving on to Speaker for the Dead and the rest of the Ender Quartet.

Also, I did hear of a new upcoming Ender/Bean novels being written by Card. Oooh...

I just joined the community and I want to introduce myself.
---
I'm really not into sci-fi and I don't really like sci-fi movies or books (except for Monica Hughes' books, which are amazing) so it might come as a surprise that I like Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow. I'm pretty much a huge Broadway- I like shows from Rent to Avenue Q to A Little Night Music to BKLN. The only fantasy I like are the Harry Potter books.

I read Ender's Game when I was nine years old, which may seem a little young. I was at a family friend's house and the father there lent me the book and said "The moral of the story is never trust adults." Well of course I was immediately interested so I read Ender's Game and fell in love.

About a year later I was in a library and I saw Ender's Shadow so I took it out. This book was even better because it wasn't a sequel, it was a companion. I loved reading scenes I had read before, opening both books (which I hadn't returned yet) and looking at the same dialogue from different points of view.

I think the books are amazing- quite honestly the best sci fi books I've ever read. I'd love there to be another companion, maybe from Petra's POV?

Hello,

I joined this community some minutes ago, so I better introduce myself now than later.

My name is Gab, I live in Lima (Peru), but got to read OSC's books when I had the chance to go to Michigan some years ago (down here it's impossible to get one of his books.. and I hate reading translations).

I discovered Ender's Game thanks to the son of the family I was staying with. By that time, he had bought almost all of Ender's and Shadow saga but I only went for Ender's Game. It was so amazing that later on I was irritated with myself for not having bought them all at once. I needed to wait some more time till I traveled again to the States (to get Ender's saga) and then I turned 18 and could start buying stuff through internet (so I got Bean's saga).

I really love this series. I'm not very much into sci-fi stories, but this one is special. I think it's because it's not focused only on the general context but on the reactions of each character and the feelings, emotions they have when something special is happening. And I really love that. Even though at first was a little difficult to imagine little kids acting like adults and reaching these conclusions that I probably wouldn't have imagined ever.

I read Ender's Game, Speaker, Xenocide and Children before I read the three Shadow books. Actually, I'm reading Ender's Shadow right now (yeah, I know it's totally wrong, but I just got my hands on that book). I have to say that I can't chose a favorite character, not only because they have totally different and special features but also because every time I think I know a character s/he does something totally unexpected. My biggest surprise of all was Peter and, even when he had a lot of the Shadow books, I felt as if I needed more of that character.

I'm really happy to find this community, especially because it's not so easy to find comms for this fandom. I guess this is long enough.. thanks for all who read, anyway. I'll go look at some posts then :D

Talks about an Ender's Game movie have been circling about for years, and I laughed today when someone mentioned they were worried the new Ender movie would get slaughtered like The Dark is Rising. In my mind, the Ender's Game movie would only ever exist in talks.

As it turns out there actually has been progress on the movie though. It actually shows up on IMDB now. Not much has really been done, but it looks like we may actually see the movie in another year or two (2008 seems a little too soon, if no actors have really even been cast yet). Card has written the majority, if not all of, the actual screenplay, so my hopes are high that this will turn out to be a pretty decent addition to the world of Ender. I don't expect it to be exactly the book--just a great complement to it.

(my husband cant' sit still long enough to read a book, but so far has been enjoying all of the ender's game novels)

I have all of them on cd, aside from 'shadow puppets' and 'shadow of the giant'. I've found shadow of the giant, but i don't want to get it until i've gotten shadow puppets because he'll skip ahead and that will just ruin it. So far the only info i've been able to find out is that it's set to release in july of this year, whcih seems strange as all the other books are on cd?

Any help would be wondeful!

The book I grabbed was Ender's Game, which someone had, a long, long time ago recommended to me; I decided to give it a whirl and was hooked.

I really love this series- Most sci-fi I've read seems to try to avoid emotions, feelings, and human ties, while this series does an amazing job (so far) of fleshing them out. It's very deep, and I feel like I really know the characters in the story. It's quite the amazing little universe.

I'm currently reading Speaker for the Dead, although it occurred to me at some point, had I really wanted to be a bit more chronologically correct, I really should have read the Shadow Series first.... Oh well. I guess it doesn't really matter.

I'm really happy to have found this community... I don't show my fangirl side to too many people, and it's nice to know there are other people out there who love Ender & Co as much as I do :-)

Fanmix - Martyr Child

I made an Ender's Game mix a while ago, and I've had requests to re-upload it. I couldn't as my computer had gone down and I lost the songs, so as I set about finding them again, so I could make the mix again, I realised that a number of my choices didn't fit, or I simply didn't some of the songs. So instead of just re-uploading the mix, I decided to do a director's cut, of sorts. Keeping my favourite songs from the last mix, I made a new one, with a bunch of new songs I think fit the book better.

Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game has got to be one of my favourite novels. I've read it countless of times -- at least thirty, if not more. It's not particularly well written, and there a few turns of phrase that make me cringe, but there's something about the mix of visceral understanding, ambiguous sympathy, and enigmatic, compelling characters that turns the book into an intensely personal kind of project. Evidently Orson Scott Card stumbled upon a happy accident, a random alchemical combination, that made this book magic, because nothing else he's written has managed the pure, touching qualities Ender's Game has. It stands as a god among novels, something personal that is tied with intimate faith and independent comprehension; no one can tell you what it is, it's yours to understand

The last mix I made was called Sail to the Moon and was more about the book as a whole. This time I wanted to focus more on Ender himself -- Ender as monster, Ender as hero, Ender as sacrifice. As such, I've named the mix Martyr Child.

MARTYR CHILD

01. "Sail to the Moon" – Radiohead

I sucked the moon,
I spoke too soon,
And how much did it cost?
I was dropped from moonbeams,
And sailed on shooting stars.

02. "Windsurfing Nation (edit)" – Broken Social Scene*

And the machine getting in between the thought and the finger,
at the brink of an evolution, we're going to linger.

03. "The Clock" – Thom Yorke

It comes to you begging you to stop.
Wake up.
But you just move your hands upon the clock.
Throw coins in the wishing well,
For us.
You make believe that you are still in charge.

04. "Flugufrelsarinn" - Sigur Rós

Eternal war, peace nowhere.
Someone has to be sacrificed.
The days are long.

05. "Pilots" – Goldfrapp

We're pilots watching stars,
The world pre-occupied.
We're pilots watching stars,
Who do we think we are?

06. "Things Behind the Sun" – Nick Drake

And once you've seen what they have been,
To win the earth just won't seem worth,
Your night or your day.

07. "I Wish I Was the Moon" – Neko Case

Chimney falls and lovers blaze,
Thought that I was young.
Now I've freezing hands and bloodless veins,
As numb as I've become.
I'm so tired,
I wish I was the moon tonight.

08. "So You’ll Aim Toward the Sky" – Grandaddy

So you'll aim toward the sky,
And you'll rise high today,
Fly away,
Far away,
Far from pain.

09. "I Talk to the Wind" – Kind Crimson

I'm on the outside looking inside,
What do I see?
Much confusion, disillusion,
All around me.

10. "Like Spinning Plates" – Radiohead

While you make pretty speeches,
I'm being cut to shreds.
You feed me to the lions,
a delicate balance.

11. "Storm (edit)" – Godspeed You! Black Emperor**

12 "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands" – Nina Simone

He's got everybody here in his hands,
He's got you and me, brother, in his hands,
He's got everybody here in his hands,
He's got the whole world...
He's got the whole world in his hands.

*"Windsurfing Nation (edit)" by Broken Social Scene has been edited by me, personally, eliminating approximately the last 10 seconds of the track, composed of meaningless studio noises. I felt it detracted from the mood of the mix.
**"Storm (edit)" by Godspeed You! Black Emperor has been edited by me, personally, eliminating the third ("'Welcome to Barco AM/PM...' [L.A.X.; 5/14/00]") and fourth ("Cancer Towers on Holy Road Hi-Way") movements as I felt they detracted from the mood of the piece. Remaining intact are the first ("Lift Yr. Skinny Fists, Like Antennas to Heaven...") and second ("Gathering Storm/Il Pleut à Mourir [+Clatters Like Worry]") movements.

Enjoy! And remember, feedback is fantastic.

I was wondering if anyone here has tried listening Ender's Game on cd?

my boyfriend is interested in the book (i have them all, and love them) but he can only listen to books on tape (since he can't sit still long enough to read anything), so i was looking to get it for him.

I was wondering if anyone has heard it, and if its any good. or if there are several versions, which is better?

any and all suggestions and comments are welcome

thankyou!
