ths makes me giggle
So I was reading about Avatar, The Last Airbender, and came across a couple of promotional pictures.

One of the pictures is of Jackson Rathbone, who played Jasper in the Twilight movie. He's playing Sokka (noooooooo), but it's so funny because:

Doesn't the vapid stare and expressionless face remind you of this:

This movie seems to be pretty on par with DBZ, and pretty much every Emmy Rossum movie, except Rathborne actually has had a hit movie and Emmy hasn't.

Plus, he doesn't go around bragging about his (fake) E6 (which it wasn't), or his singing ability.

And if that's not enough, I could always point out the fact that I'm not a soprano (I think I'm a mezzo, or some kind of weird alto), and I managed to nail the E6, so whatever Emmy, you've been pwned by someone who's never even been in a musical.

Oh wow, I hadn't seen picture from the movie yet...I'm sooooo disappointed with everything they've done so far D:

WTF is with Zuko's non-scar? Did they get the makeup artist behind Gerik's sunburn to do it or something? WHY CAN'T HOLLYWOOD DEAL WITH SCARS?! Or minorities for that matter...HAI NEARLY BLOND KATARA.

I was wondering the same thing.

Did the use the same makeup artist?

I'm really pissed off about the whitewashing. There's no reason to NOT cast asians, given all the asian influences.

Ba Gua, Tai Chi, etc etc.

And what are we getting in the film? freaking tae kwon do and badly done ba gua (if you can even call it that).

Sifu Kisu, the martial arts consultant for the cartoon wanted to train the kids for at least one year, but that didn't happen. Instead, they got 6 weeks of martial arts training, wtf.

The Avatar is the Avatar. No way in hell 6 weeks is sufficient training.

Aang is supposed to be saving the world. He can't do that unless he learns to master all four elements, which can't be done in a short amount of time anyways.

And have you seen the super-amazing little asian boy that tried out for Aang but got over-looked? It blows my mind every time I think about it:

Perris Aquino?

He would have been AMAAAAAAAZING as Aang, I wonder why he wasn't picked, grrr.

Well, I know why.

The casting sheet called for white people only. I wish I was making it up, but the casting director said they were specifically looking for white people for the movie, and that makes the whitewashing 10000x worse.

It's crazy! Why would they pick some kid who had no idea what he was doing over a child prodigy who has proven that he can already to everything in the show? It's like they're determined to make it not-good.

Maybe the movie studio doesn't think it'll do well with asians, which is pretty dumb as every martial art film that was made for American audiences has done very well.

Jet Li and Jackie Chan movies are AWEEEESOME. Forbidden Kingdom was spectacular!

But yeah, I really don't know their reasoning at all, and it's really sad because it undermines the original show, and it's racism.

The movie is also going to be in three parts. I hope the first one fails so hard, that the production studio won't put any more money into it, or that it does so bad it forces the studio to rethink the casting and removal of asian influences.

I know the creators were mad about it, and most of the older fans aren't too happy either. Which is a major blow to their market...more adults who are in to martial arts/asian studies/animation liked Avatar than kids in their originally intended audience. Pissing off the adults who are old and wise enough to see what's happening isn't going to be good for their sales.

I agree.

The adults are the ones who control the money for the kids, so if the studio loses that, who the heck is going to buy tickets?

Poor Perris. He really should have been Aang, he was so amazing, and he even had that goofy Aang face when he smiled.

I'm sure by now though, he's been noticed. With all the whitewashing, and fans saying that Perris should have been Aang, no doubt someone high up has seen his stuff.

I wish nothing but good things for that kid. Noah Ringer looks so wimpy and horrible compared to Perris. Noah's staff movements are very, very choppy and not fluid at all.

Well, Forbidden Kingdom had a white kid as the hero, didn't it? :/

sort of.

While it did have one white kid, the kid clearly wasn't supposed to be asian, unlike Avatar, and the rest of the cast was asian so that kind of made up for it.

Oh no, I agree with you. I think it's ridiculous when people try to argue that it's okay for Aang to be white.* But when I saw the adverts for The Forbidden Kingdom I had to roll my eyes because it was an example, again, of a movie where other races were fit only to help the white kid with his adventures (especially grating considering how the movie treated his love interest).

*Because even if the entirely Asian world didn't give it away, the fact remains that anime has different markers for race than what we in the West normally look for. I know it's made in the US but when they copy the style I'd argue that they copied some of the cues as well. So just because Aang doesn't look like whomever's version of Asian doesn't mean that he can't be. It means we might not be able to recognize the cues.

I don't think it's totally off topic.

I mean, Emmy and Jackson kinda look alike, and they've both been in movies that have failed (or will), both are kinda crappy actors/virtual unknowns.Z list celebs, both are musicians, etc.

I wouldn't call movie!Katara's hair nearly blonde though. It looks like a medium to light brown, but the hair and the eyebrows don't match up, so I am wondering if maybe Nicola Peltz has had her hair dyed, or if this was done via Photoshop.

Oh no, I didn't mean the OP was off topic, I meant that I was going to deviate from topic with my Avatar: The Lame AirbenderMovie wank. The blank stares between Emmy and Jackson made me giggle, actually.

baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah ;_______________________;

so white people = good
brown people = bad

yes, that is TOTALLY what people need to be thinking right now, given everything going on the US. Great job, Paramount.

well, to be fair, he'd be a good Sokka, but as Zuko, heck no.

At least as Sokka, the skintone is right, since Sokka and Katara are Inuits.
