Emerson vs. Columbia College

I was admitted early action for this year but I've to do a year at a local state college to get gen ed classes out of the way, and I'm hoping to transfer to Emerson in the fall of 2009. However, I've been thinking about other schools, and I was wondering if anyone currently had considered Columbia College Chicago as an option or knows anything about its reputation. I'm planning on going to an open house at Columbia, but I wanted to get a little perspective on it now. Both have a LA program, a lot of networking opportunities and a TV station, but I haven't seen a lot of comparisons between the two so it's hard to tell which is better in any of those areas. Also, I've heard that teachers at Columbia grade more based on effort, and Emerson seems to be a little more intense about the learning process and hard work, although that's just my first impression. I'd rather learn more and work harder, and my main concern is choosing a school with a reputation/internship opportunity that will give me the best career opportunities in the future (I'm planning to major in Writing for Film & TV and eventually I hope to have a career as a staff writer for a sitcom). I know that Emerson excels in all of these areas which is why it's my first choice, but I was wondering if anyone knew enough about Columbia to make a comparison. Thanks!

Here by way of "College Confidential"

I'm a high school junior (now senior) searching for a college with a good communications program. How does Emerson compare to other places, like Syracuse?

I'm also very interested in international relations and was a little disappointed by the limited study abroad options. Emerson advertises itself as a communications LAC, but do they offer good programs in languages?

Foreign Language Credits

Hello!

I am a high school junior and have a question about foreign language credits. I am currently taking my second year of French (well, technically my third, I took French 1 in eighth grade but decided to retake it my sophomore year). Anyway, to the point, I know that most websites say that Emerson requires three foreign language credits.

Now, my school only offers French 3 during fifth period and I am hoping to get out before then. I intend to dual enroll at the community college across the street to break up the monotony (and have time for a part-time job). I can take French there, but would have to start with their French one. I'm okay with this, I mean, maybe that way I could actually pronounce the words correctly, however, I would prefer to take German instead.

Once upon a time, I wrote to a counselor asking about something and somehow the French question fit into that. He/she (I can’t remember) said that having three credits didn’t really matter; I’d just have to take a language upon my enrollment at the school. I know, I know, I should just listen to the expert. However, I am really just curious, how many of you got in with only two foreign language credits? Should I take the third one just be on the safe side?

Thanks for your time.

So this might be obvious... but I'm just a little confused. For WLP because of the required amount of Lit and then W/P courses, it evens out to 5 Lit courses and 5 W/P courses. My true interests are in the W/P courses. So, in theory, if I double minored in writing and publishing, I'd be able to take 4 of each, almost doubling the amount of classes I'd be taking if I did a WLP major.

(and I'm planning on double majoring, so I won't have many, if any, extra credits to take classes outside of what is required for each major). Can someone just check my logic? I really wanted to major in WLP (of my two majors I was more excited for this one) but now its seeming more logical to just do a double minor and stick with one (other) major.

Hi everyone!

I got accepted for class of 2012 and I submitted the fafsa, CSS profile, and all the other forms that were due by feb. 1st, so I'm just wondering what I do next. My parents are kind of freaking out a little. Should I call the school to see if they got my stuff? And does anyone know how long it usually takes for Emerson to put the financial aid package together? Or is there like an actual notification date? Sorry, my parents are stressing out... just wave that 40k bill in front of their face and they go crazy, haha.

Ok, so it sucks being deferred but I've pulled it together.

I don't have enough time to prepare for the SAT/ACT (I'm not taking a math class this year, so it's actually likely my score would decrease without practice), but I am thinking of taking the Literature SAT Subject Test. Is this a good idea/will admissions care that I do well on it? Besides taking the subject test, I've scrounged three more teacher recommendations. I'm also writing two more essays and will probably submit some creative work as well. Do you guys think this is enough to convey how passionate I am about Emerson, or is there more I could/should do?

Oh, and far as the essays go.., I'm having some trouble. Is there an example of a creative, well-written essay that anyone could link me to? I'm not trying to plagiarize by any means, I just want to get a better grip on the whole concept of a "creative essay" — I think my original application essay was too dry and conventional. I tend to be extremely loose with parameters, and my lines between creative writing and creative essay are consequently blurred. Sorry if these are stupid questions.!

Well, I think that's it! I'm pretty much spending the rest of my break working on all this stuff. Thanks for any responses in advance :-)

Taylor

i am looking into transferring in fall '08. but here is my problem, i was homeschooled and i never took the sats or acts. i'm currently a freshman at indiana university with a 3.5 gpa and i graduated from 'high school' with honors, but will not having an sat/act score kill me? i'm nervous. i notice it says on the website that if you have been out of high school for 3 or more years you don't have to submit any scores. i graduated early so it has been probably pretty close to three years. i have no idea what i can do to increase my chances of acceptance.
also, if i were to get in, i am an english major right now and i was wondering how easy it is to transfer credits if i was intending to come in as a writing, literature and publishing major. as far as actual writing classes go, so far i've taken a couple composition classes and i have a creative writing class coming up. would these transfer at all?
i know the deadline for transfers is march 15, how soon should i apply? i'm unsure of how many transfers they take in, so i want to get my application in semi early.
thank you so much in advance for your help! everyone is probably totally sick of all the how good are my chances posts but i just have to know! and you all seem pretty helpful anyhow.
thanks again.

Question - academic record

I got my acceptance letter a few days ago, and I have a question - how much of a drop in grades would be enough for a rescinded offer of admission? I'm having a lot of difficulty with my physics class right now and I currently have a C...I should be able to raise it a little but I had a B in my first quarter grades that were sent over, and who knows what it'll be second semester when things get harder. Anyone know how strict Emerson is about our continuing high school record?

Hey everyone! I got my acceptance letter today, and I'm so psyched. I visited Emerson in April with my family and I loved the atmosphere, it really seemed like a fit. My parents liked it at first, but then decided they didn't really want me to go because they don't think it's a real college experience. They say it's too professional, and there's really no campus. Any suggestions on convincing them otherwise?

I GOT IN!!!!

Anyone else?

My admission deposit hasn't changed, which is scaring me, is that normal?

Why did I find out so early..?!?! I'm NOT upset, but my cousin was admitted to a school, and they made a mistake, so they un-admitted her... this wont happen here, right?!
