I reorganized all of my journals tonight because I was giving my (extensive) stash of blank ones to my younger sister, and I took some pictures of my journal collection.

Stacks of journals and the last one I finished... )

I still love this community more than just about anything.

Well it has been awhile since I posted anything from my journal; So I picked a few pages to share with you guys. I really have been slacking off on the everyday thing--but I think it is more important to write when you have the inspiration and desire to than to just do it to do it.

Journal Dissemination [Jul. 13th, 2009|10:30 pm]

There's plenty of journal pages I'd prefer to never see again, and I certainly wouldn't want future generations reading them.

So I'm sending them to new owners.

Message me with a mailing address if you'd like some journal pages from my weird brain.

I finally started a new journal. Yesterday I picked up a plain sketchbook from Blick Art Store in Oakland and decorated it to suit my style. ^_~

So I've posted here a few times before, mostly just scraps of stuff. I finally motivated myself to start an art journal. It's been going okay so far. I really love the idea of an art journal and hope I can keep up with it. I'm really determined to, because many of my journals in the past have failed. I haven't exactly written everyday but I've been trying... Also, a lot of the pages are unfinished.
Here are images from the journal:

Anyway, I'm only a few pages into my new journal and already starting to struggle a little bit. I can usually think of enough stuff to put in there, but composition is a big problem for me. I really want the layout of the pages to be visually appealing. (My sketchbook is 7x10 if that matters.) I tend to lack creativity and inspiration. Any tips?

My Secret is Inconsistancy [Jul. 6th, 2009|08:48 am]

I am not getting the journaling done everyeday, and I am okay with that.  It is more by choice because I can pretty much spew stuff out any time because I just write whatever pops into my head I don't care if it is pointless, "I heart Daniel jackson".  Sometimes I might just write a single word, "crap!".  It is my brain, but on paper.

My mother-in-law once said she was really glad that I journal, she said it would be valuble to future generations of the family.  She was assuming that I was keeping some written account of my days that I would leave behind when I die.  I had to tell her that I wasn't keeping them for that, that I write primarily about feelings, my feelings, and it would likely be better if they got burned with my body when I die.  She was disapointed and a bit taken back.  Probebly because I wasn't terribly calm when I informed her of the truth, more "Oh NO!!!  NO! NO! NO!  This isn't that sort of record, this is where I get out my insane ramblings and say things that I wouldn't say to actual people.  In fact, some of it isn't very nice."  We were in the middle of a big family get together, I just realized that the situation, I was sitting there writing and then I tell her that sometimes I bitch about people in my journal, she likely thought I was writing my gripes that I was not speaking abotu everyone there.  Ooops.

I've not written in my journal in the last week largely because I have been trying to avoid real thought.  I just got out of an Art History class at the end of June, one of those accelerate, cram sixteen weeks worth of material into five and a half weeks, kind of classes, and don't forget the three intense assignments each week to prove that you are learning something.  I've been trying to live on single sell organisim brain function levels ever since, or just avoiding reality as much as possible.  Journaling is not condusive to avoiding brain function.  Slowly I am starting to resume brain function now, I started writing fiction the other day and I will likely bust out my journal today.  I have a class starting in about a week so I need to start booting the system up.

post on prompts [Jul. 6th, 2009|03:01 pm]

[music |MALICE MIZER - Premier Amour]

This post is entirely about prompts.  I'm sure some of these have been in the circulation on the web for a while now, while others seem to have appeared only recently.  (I google this subject thoroughly every couple of weeks or so.  :P)  I don't often turn to prompts, to be honest, but I like knowing that I've got a few in my collection, should the journalling block strike.  So below is a list of links I've accumulated in the last two years or so.  I hope you'll find them useful.  Feel free to share yours in the comments, there can never be enough prompts!

Some of these are aimed at children's classwork, but I found them quite compelling too:
http://www.tooter4kids.com/journal_writing.htm
http://www.canteach.ca/elementary/prompts.html
http://www.superteacherworksheets.com/journal-prompts.html

A site I've just discovered.  The lady's a personal coach, and she keeps a journalling prompts category on her blog.  Some of these are really great.  I found myself staring in the distance pondering the question immediately.  Don't forget to visit sites & articles that are linked to, some great stuff there too:
http://laurayoung.typepad.com/nosafedistance/journal_prompts/

A journalling jar craft idea.  Or you can just use the prompt list provided.  Works just as well for personal use.  Look at the list of resources at the end:

One of my favourites:

And so on...

http://www.squidoo.com/journalwritingprompts - huge-arse collection of prompts, beats this one ten times

http://www.diyplanner.com/node/824
http://www.inspiredtojournal.com/articles.html - not exactly prompts, but good articles nonetheless

For creative writing:

http://www.creativewritingprompts.com/
http://www.google.com/ig/directory?type=gadgets&url=www.moderoom.com/mode-ig/moderoom_writersbank.xml - a gadget for your Google homepage.  It's pretty amazing.

For religious writing:

http://community.livejournal.com/pagan_prompt/
http://supercaliblogalistic.blogspot.com/2009/06/pagan-journal-prompts.html - a couple of prompts
(Note:  I'd love to expand this section more and add representations of different beliefs, but unfortunately my google fu didn't lead me to anything, with an exception of a few rather offensive sites.  If you've got any contributions to this section, please comment with links.)

And of course, don't forget to check the prompts tag here on Embodiment.

Hope this is of some use to you!

text-only: question on prompts [Jul. 5th, 2009|10:59 pm]

[mood | curious]

Have you ever used a prompt that not only ended up in many pages of text, but also kicked you into action immediately afterwards?

It happened to me today.  I didn't know what to write so I took a list of various prompts I keep printed for moments like those, and one of them was about my interior landscape, or something like that.  Anyway, I ended up writing for like ten pages and then began overhauling the kitchen, because what I've written looked too depressing.  :P

Has anything like that ever happened to you?

Newbie: About to commence Journal #1 [Sep. 8th, 2008|01:05 am]

ytothelime

Woo!

I got a nice, neat journal from Paperchase in borders yesterday for something like £5,which I'm happy with,as I was initially considering one of those Paperblank books, which have elaborate covers, but cost the earth!

Once my current migraine has subsided completely, I'm going to try and get started on a front/introductory page =]
What have any of you guys done for your first journal pages in the past? Anything sentimental or have you just dived straight into it?

journals #7 and #8 of the year. [Jul. 3rd, 2009|05:47 pm]

I apologise for such difference in brightness, contrast, etc. in these photos -- I am afraid my camera is at its last breath, it's been with me for 8 years now, the poor thing.  I tried fixing it up a little, but I'm lazy.

i'm text-only, so the pictures aren't pretty. :P I think there are 11 of them. )

And now, something I started pondering about as I typed this all up:
I noticed that whenever I use a smaller notebook, I seem to write much more often in it, and when I'm using something bigger, my entries get shorter.  Am I alone in this one?  Have you noticed any random patterns in your writing habits in relation to the notebook you use?

I just found two moleskine ruled reporter notebooks at borders for $6 on clearance!!! I've never used this type before but I'm looking forward to it. Anyone in the Dekalb, Illinois area there were a few more on the sale rack in the back. I'm tempted to buy them all up and then sell them on ebay/eljay but I don't know if I have the time.

Question though: I have a journal I started a while ago that I used for a few months but then stoppped, I actually haven't been journaling much recently but I want to start back up. What's your personal opinion on abandoning a journal before it's done?
