| My Secret is Inconsistancy |
[Jul. 6th, 2009|08:48 am] |
I am not getting the journaling done everyeday, and I am okay with that. It is more by choice because I can pretty much spew stuff out any time because I just write whatever pops into my head I don't care if it is pointless, "I heart Daniel jackson". Sometimes I might just write a single word, "crap!". It is my brain, but on paper.
My mother-in-law once said she was really glad that I journal, she said it would be valuble to future generations of the family. She was assuming that I was keeping some written account of my days that I would leave behind when I die. I had to tell her that I wasn't keeping them for that, that I write primarily about feelings, my feelings, and it would likely be better if they got burned with my body when I die. She was disapointed and a bit taken back. Probebly because I wasn't terribly calm when I informed her of the truth, more "Oh NO!!! NO! NO! NO! This isn't that sort of record, this is where I get out my insane ramblings and say things that I wouldn't say to actual people. In fact, some of it isn't very nice." We were in the middle of a big family get together, I just realized that the situation, I was sitting there writing and then I tell her that sometimes I bitch about people in my journal, she likely thought I was writing my gripes that I was not speaking abotu everyone there. Ooops.
I've not written in my journal in the last week largely because I have been trying to avoid real thought. I just got out of an Art History class at the end of June, one of those accelerate, cram sixteen weeks worth of material into five and a half weeks, kind of classes, and don't forget the three intense assignments each week to prove that you are learning something. I've been trying to live on single sell organisim brain function levels ever since, or just avoiding reality as much as possible. Journaling is not condusive to avoiding brain function. Slowly I am starting to resume brain function now, I started writing fiction the other day and I will likely bust out my journal today. I have a class starting in about a week so I need to start booting the system up. |

| post on prompts |
[Jul. 6th, 2009|03:01 pm] |
This post is entirely about prompts. I'm sure some of these have been in the circulation on the web for a while now, while others seem to have appeared only recently. (I google this subject thoroughly every couple of weeks or so. :P) I don't often turn to prompts, to be honest, but I like knowing that I've got a few in my collection, should the journalling block strike. So below is a list of links I've accumulated in the last two years or so. I hope you'll find them useful. Feel free to share yours in the comments, there can never be enough prompts!
Some of these are aimed at children's classwork, but I found them quite compelling too: http://www.tooter4kids.com/journal_writing.htm http://www.canteach.ca/elementary/prompts.html http://www.superteacherworksheets.com/journal-prompts.html
A site I've just discovered. The lady's a personal coach, and she keeps a journalling prompts category on her blog. Some of these are really great. I found myself staring in the distance pondering the question immediately. Don't forget to visit sites & articles that are linked to, some great stuff there too: http://laurayoung.typepad.com/nosafedistance/journal_prompts/
A journalling jar craft idea. Or you can just use the prompt list provided. Works just as well for personal use. Look at the list of resources at the end: http://www.scrapjazz.com/topics/Themes/About_Me/874.php
One of my favourites: http://www.tenthousandquestions.com/
And so on... http://journalingprompts.com/ http://www.squidoo.com/journalwritingprompts - huge-arse collection of prompts, beats this one ten times http://www.geocities.com/papabear1701/prompt_library.html http://nanfischer.wordpress.com/ http://www.diyplanner.com/node/824 http://www.inspiredtojournal.com/articles.html - not exactly prompts, but good articles nonetheless
For creative writing: http://www.writersdigest.com/WritingPrompts/ http://www.writingfix.com/ http://www.creativewritingprompts.com/ http://www.google.com/ig/directory?type=gadgets&url=www.moderoom.com/mode-ig/moderoom_writersbank.xml - a gadget for your Google homepage. It's pretty amazing.
For religious writing: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/30129/keeping_a_devotional_journal_15_prompts.html http://silvermoonwitch.blogspot.com/2008/03/pagan-journal-promts.html http://community.livejournal.com/pagan_prompt/ http://supercaliblogalistic.blogspot.com/2009/06/pagan-journal-prompts.html - a couple of prompts (Note: I'd love to expand this section more and add representations of different beliefs, but unfortunately my google fu didn't lead me to anything, with an exception of a few rather offensive sites. If you've got any contributions to this section, please comment with links.)
And of course, don't forget to check the prompts tag here on Embodiment.
Hope this is of some use to you! |

| text-only: question on prompts |
[Jul. 5th, 2009|10:59 pm] |
Have you ever used a prompt that not only ended up in many pages of text, but also kicked you into action immediately afterwards?
It happened to me today. I didn't know what to write so I took a list of various prompts I keep printed for moments like those, and one of them was about my interior landscape, or something like that. Anyway, I ended up writing for like ten pages and then began overhauling the kitchen, because what I've written looked too depressing. :P
Has anything like that ever happened to you? |

| Newbie: About to commence Journal #1 |
[Sep. 8th, 2008|01:05 am] |
Woo!
I got a nice, neat journal from Paperchase in borders yesterday for something like £5,which I'm happy with,as I was initially considering one of those Paperblank books, which have elaborate covers, but cost the earth!
Once my current migraine has subsided completely, I'm going to try and get started on a front/introductory page =] What have any of you guys done for your first journal pages in the past? Anything sentimental or have you just dived straight into it? |

| journals #7 and #8 of the year. |
[Jul. 3rd, 2009|05:47 pm] |
I apologise for such difference in brightness, contrast, etc. in these photos -- I am afraid my camera is at its last breath, it's been with me for 8 years now, the poor thing. I tried fixing it up a little, but I'm lazy.
( i'm text-only, so the pictures aren't pretty. :P I think there are 11 of them. )
And now, something I started pondering about as I typed this all up: I noticed that whenever I use a smaller notebook, I seem to write much more often in it, and when I'm using something bigger, my entries get shorter. Am I alone in this one? Have you noticed any random patterns in your writing habits in relation to the notebook you use? |

I just found two moleskine ruled reporter notebooks at borders for $6 on clearance!!! I've never used this type before but I'm looking forward to it. Anyone in the Dekalb, Illinois area there were a few more on the sale rack in the back. I'm tempted to buy them all up and then sell them on ebay/eljay but I don't know if I have the time.
Question though: I have a journal I started a while ago that I used for a few months but then stoppped, I actually haven't been journaling much recently but I want to start back up. What's your personal opinion on abandoning a journal before it's done? |

| Hike up the price!!! |
[Jun. 30th, 2009|08:19 am] |
I found a wonderful type of journal that I absolutely love. I have been buying a new one every time I see a new pattern. They are called Jumbo Journals at Wal-Mart. They are just great. And because they all look so different, I don't get bored with the journal.
They went up in price from $5.83 to $9.96!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so sad about this. I'm sure I'll still buy them. It was just a shock initially. I was trying to figure out why my wal-mart bill was so expensive and it was because the journal price had gone up. I can't believe how much they marked up the price. So strange. I mean, it's just a journal. Weird.
I'm really kinda sad. I never had a problem just throwing a journal in the cart whenever there was a new pattern. Now I feel like I need to check the budget first. Bleh. |

I don't know what's it with me and links lately, but here's another one. Found it whilst browsing through flickr groups.
Turning the Pages
It's a media presentation of lots of old books, including Jane Austen's early work, William Blake's notebooks, and Mozart's music diaries -- with audio, magnifying glass, readable text, etc. etc. It's really very cool, though my wrist now hurts from all the page turning -- you can choose between sliding and "turning", but seriously, turning is much greater and so authentic.
It's wonderful, seriously, visit it. |

| Writing Slump... |

I am starting to get annoyed with myself, I am in a major writing slump. I have been having to force myself to write here lately. Now I have to admit I kinda expected a little bit of a change. I got a new job, a new full time job in my career field! plus there is a 45 min commute both ways, I knew this would change my free time and my time for writing, but I thought Oh I will get used to it and work through it. Plus it is summer and I have been super busy with friends and such, so much that when I have free time I just didn't feel like writing. I have been writing straight for over 4 years now, I have gone through some slow times, but never to this extent...I have had them but they never lasted this long, I am going on a month of being like this! We went on our usual Anniversary vacation to FL and I take a travel journal with me like I do every year, and I make a big deal of buying a new huge leather journal while down there (which I still bought, but I dont feel as excited about it as I should, It's a Gorgous Journal too!) but this time, I barely even felt like titling pages to write on later, and lots of things I want to remember happened. I usually write summaries on my way home so I don't forget little things, but I just didn't feel like it. WHY??!! This is when it hit me, I just didn't have the urge to write! and this is strange for me, since I usually keep so many different kinds of journals that I am usually writing something all the time, but lately I have only barely been keeping my usual one up to date, and I still feel bad b/c I am only writing like 1/3 of what I usually would. Does anyone have any suggesstions to get me out of this slump? how to force myself to feel like writing when I have time? I don't want it to become a chore when it is usually such a joy to me. Plus I have to write to finish the old journal to start the new one I just got, and the way I am going I will never get it done! and it's # 19! I want to make it to 20, I want to move on and continue, I just don't have the urge to write like I should! What is wrong with me!!?? |

Hello! I'm new to this community and I was just wondering- what kind of stuff do you put in your journals? I've been at a standstill in my journal for about 2 weeks. Just so you know, I like to put unusual stuff in mine, like my favorite names, famous people with my birthday & such. |

| | curious | ] | I have seen a few other people doing it in this community as well as another recent post with the same offer. So I figured why not try it! Anybody wanna trade journals? A plain notebook that we would fill, and send to each other. Specifics can be worked out at a later day seeing as how it would take a us a bit to fill the notebooks anyway. I can do this with a couple of people, but in the U.S. please, it can be expensive to send out of country sometimes. I would love to trade journals with other people in other countries at a later date though. Let me know if you are intrested. |

| end of journals |
[Jun. 23rd, 2009|04:14 pm] |
do you do anything special with the last page of your journal? how does it make you feel to be completing it?
i am one page away from my 2nd journal, and it's pretty thick and has taken me a year to complete. it is SO personal that i feel slightly sad to be finishing it, almost like finishing it means a part of me is finishing, too, and because i'm finishing it just a few days before my 18th birthday - both feel like a milestone. o.o i'm probably just chatting shit but i'm just interested. it also makes me a little bit worried. like, what if i can't do anymore pages after this in a new one? what if i don't have any creativity??!?!!!
if you have photos of completed journals and/or last few pages, could i see, please? thank you!
also have you ever done an altered book? can i see? how did you start? i want to start but i'm nervous, for some reason!
