Taking in new moderators
Hello all,
For those of you who don't know I am an Elfwood Moderator, and on January 1st Monica put out a memo on the site news that we were in need of new moderators. Unfortunately it no longer shows up on the main page, so a lot of people wont notice. If you are interested please read the message below.

"Wanted: moderators!
We are in need of more moderators, since Elfwood is in constant growth.

We're currently looking for moderators for FanQuarter and SF&F art only.

Requirements:

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • You must be able to chat online through an IRC channel. You're welcome to download a program to use it, but otherwise we have a webbased client, which means all you need is an open browser window.
  • You must be an Elfwood member.
  • You must have a published account that have been published for at least 4 months in the area or areas you are volunteering for. For FanQuarter we prefer that you have an account in that area but it's not necessary, but we do require that you at least have an account in SF&F art.
  • You must have a good record, meaning no major rejections in the past year, for example for copying or repeated rejections.
  • You must be willing to give at least 1-2 hours a week to moderating.
  • You must have a good understanding of the rules.

If you have the requirements, then please proceed in reading the rest and volunteer.

You're welcome to volunteer for more than 1 area. We will put up a note when we have enough volunteers, and all that have volunteered will hear back from us, but it might take a little while, so please be patient.

For FanQuarter: We prefer volunteers that are familiar with a number of anime and/or American comics. We are currently looking for volunteers who know their American comics like Marvel and others, but we also need people who know their Dragon Ball, Inuyasha, Yu-Gi-Oh, Fushigi Yuugi, Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho, Naruto, Gundam, Hellsing, Sailor Moon and others.

To contacts us please go to the Contact page and choose "Volunteering" from the drop-down box and make sure you put which area or areas you are volunteering for in the subject line, like "FanQuarter mod", "Wyvern mod" or "SF&F mod". If you want to volunteer for more than 1 area, just list them both like "FanQuarter and SF&F mod"."

  • Okay, me again. I didn't know before that she didn't want Wyverns moderators, but I think that's just because we are short of people who can train in that area. If you really really want to, I think you could go ahead and tell her and she just might say ok... or keep you waiting until we have room.

The process of getting accepted as a moderator consist of a sort of internet background check, just looking at your activity on Elfwood, and asking the other moderators if they know anything bad about you. Then she will say yes or no for you and then give you a test of images for you to look at and tell whether they should be accepted or not. The test is a bit long and you may have to retake it, which is fine by her. It puts to the test your memory of all of the SFF(or FQ) rules as well as the general rules. After that you will train with another moderator by doing the same as the test, telling them how you would process a ticket. Then they will tell you whether you are right or not and correct you if your not. You will do that until the trainer believes you are ready to moderate on your own.

If anyone has any more questions, feel free to ask.

Run people! RUN!! Do not get caught in the moderator trap!

-Seriously though..you people need to revise the moderating process if you ever hope to get some long-term masochists to work on the site. Not too long ago when I was still causing trouble, a dedicated defender of the site (who used to give me a hard time when I complained) admitted I was right after quitting explosively and ranting about the idiots she dealt with and their nitpicky rules (IE: dinosaurs aren't considered fantasy because they once existed; runes and make believe languages have to be translated).

When I was a mod, I never got the freedom to pick my own highlights and often saw my choices erased, yet I see subpar modpicks up every day, like that horrid woman with the zombie eyes and no background. Also this (no background) -or- this (ooo...a craptastic picture of whips and chains! We love sensationalism!)

I'm trying to support the site, leave nice comments, and maintain my top commentor status, but every time I see garbage like that, it reminds me all over again about what I resented about the site.

Hehe, you forgot to mention the training in interpreting rules to mean whatever you want them to just so you can reject every picture you ever see. Thats the most important bit, managing to create reasons why you reject everything. Gotta be good at writing fiction to be a mod. Probably need an english degree to be good enough at it.

Oh yes, and while I'm here, you know when you delete your gallery and elfwood says it will send you an email telling you how to access the back up of the files you had on it. It lies, I deleted my Fanquarter many months ago and still don't have that email and before you ask I was checking the right email adress and I did check the spam folder. They never sent it.

Good job I didn't need it isn't it.

In reply to both scellanis and kharmii, I think it's sad that you have to warn people to stay away and tell them how bad it is. You are both members of Elfwood (right?), but you what, like the idea of Elfwood's queue being long? Or you just want to attack us?

I know Kharmii, you resent the fact that a lot of the moderators choices are subpar. I'll go ahead and voice that to the others, but you have to realize that not everyone has the same taste in art as you. If a piece impresses the moderator, than they are likely to pick it for an MC. I do think it is sad that your MC's were removed, but who ever did that stopped doing it and we're not nearly as picky.

In regards to the rules, they are made that way for a reason. Someone could be cussing in Japanese, and we wouldn't know. We still wouldn't know if they decided not to translate it right, but maybe someone would then tell us. Dinosaurs did exist, so you think it should be okay if someone just started submitting the same paintings they did for a childrens dinosaur book? If it has a fantasy explanation then it will be let in, other wise it is just historical.

If you understand the rules and find that a moderator is giving you a bullshit reject, then you need to call them on it by replying back or emailing support. We don't want anyone doing that, but we do try our best to make sure what is approved follows the rules. That is all we aim for, moderators are enforcers of the rules, that is all.

And Kharmii, we don't have a problem of keeping moderators. I've trained ten people and out of them all, only one has left. We are asking for more moderators, because the site is growing, the queue's get out of hand real easily. Within a day the queue can jump from 70 tickets(in art), to a whole 150.

    Steve H.
