I watched "Balls of Fury" over the weekend. That doesn't have much to do with my comic, but there was a bit in the movie where a henchperson delivers a dramatic threat and stalks off. He then returns to ask how to get back to the freeway. This would be totally fine, except I used the same joke in Comic #410.The film was released in 2007, so I can't claim I thought of this gag first. But I can say that I came up with the line before I saw the movie. I take comfort in that.
I'm probably bothered more by it than my readers are, because most people understand that there's no way to guarantee 100% Original Material. Since I work so much with the conventions and clichés of genre fiction, much of my topic matter is chosen because it's well-traveled ground. Overlap will happen. And trying to view every current TV show, movie, and comic to ensure that I don't accidentally use the same gag seems an impossible strategy.
With that said, I won't ever intentionally steal someone else's joke. Other sources may inspire a comic or storyline, but I'll always try to put my own spin on it. And when I find that I've used the same joke as someone else, I'll do my best to shrug and carry on. After I post about it, of course.
Some fans might assume that in preparation for the Evil Scouts storyline, I wrote up an exhaustive description of the Evil Scouts, from their charter to history to a complete set of badges, patches, pins and awards. While this may surprise you: I did not. No, I pretty much did the bare minimum necessary to bring what you see to the screen, which still took a lot of time. Perhaps if Robby and Bobby make more appearances, I’ll add more to their insignia and backstory, but here’s what I’ve got now. This is mostly just to see if that weird auto-screening-of-comments happens on other folks' posts*, and not just those by The Beloved Author. However, while we're here...

I generally prefer to let Internet Rumors run their course, but I do feel it necessary to address something you might have read. Specifically, the rumor that unreasonable contract demands from the robot who plays "Ping" have caused negotiations to devolve into bitter accusations and he's being written out of the comic. This is ridiculous. All of the performers at "Ask Dr. Eldritch" are consummate professionals and are quite happy with their compensation. I hope this is the last that needs to be said on the matter.
As for the rumor that Ping is pregnant and is taking time off to be with the baby.... No Comment.

Remember the Ask Dr. Eldritch Reader's Poll? No? Well, we had one, and I've finally gotten around to posting the results. Here are the counts and percentages for each of the questions. I see that more women read the comic than men (or at least, more answered the survey). My readers also tend to be an educated lot (most have college degrees), socio-politically left, and you don't read lots of webcomics (60% read 10 or fewer each week). Many of you live in the United States (78%), but the rest live in Canada, England, Ireland, Scotland, Australia or New Zealand. I know that I have readers in a number of other countries, but they chose not to fill out the survey. Thanks to everyone for your input, and I hope you find this interesting!
