【DISCUSSION】 Screentones
Let's go straight to the main point of this discussion, shall we? How do the many talented colourists here deal with screentones?

I think everyone here is already familiar with how I deal with them: I like to make my colourings as illustration-like as possible. As such, screentones often get in my way, and being the lazy jerk I am I...erase all the tones manually and re-colour the effects myself. |D";; Granted, the results may not be as good as the original effects, but tones make my pages ugly. :(

I notice that I seem to be the only one doing this, though? D: When I look at [info]angeling's or [info]fiendie's pages, I swear, the way you guys do it--the tones just go so well with your colouring and IT AMAZES ME. *__* I am amazed at anyone who can handle tones. ;;

What kind of tones do you get rid of, what kind of toning treatment techniques do you guys all apply? Do you use different treatment methods with different scans? :)

【DISCUSSION】 Color-coordination
I've always wondered about this, but how do you choose your color schemes?

Do you elaborately plan it all out before coloring?
Do you just go with the flow as you color?
Do you make references to color palettes available at places like ColourLovers?
Something else?

I usually just have a very vague idea of what I want the colored image to look like and add colors as I go along. Most of the times, the colors turn out weird. |D;

What is thy secret? 8D

【DISCUSSION】 Over or under lineart?
Because another discussion post is due XD. To all our members, seriously, feel free to post any discussion ideas you might have :3!

When colouring manga, do you have colour layers above your lineart, or under your lineart? A common question, really, and it's interesting to see who does what!

I used to colour above the lineart a long time ago, but I found it very meticulous and tiring and just a pain (See, uh, I quit manga colouring when the trend first came out in late 2005/early 2006, because it was too troublesome XD). I then stumbled across [info]angeling's post about colouring under lineart, with the lineart set on multiply/linear burn, and I guess the style just fit me better. I'm lazy and don't like colouring inside lines, so the advantage of not having to erase all layers, and sticking another layer over to cover it up appealed to me XD.

【THEMES】002: Water
Oh hey, well what do you know, it's June already!

This month's theme is water. Feel free to interpretly as loosely as you like (for example, tears could be interpreted as water).

Notes:
- For this particular theme, panels, pages and double spreads are all welcome.
- The theme is just here for inspiration! Pages you post do not need to follow this theme, if you like.
- You may submit as many pages/panels as you like to the theme.

This theme will span from now until 30th June, 2008, when a new theme will be put in place. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them here.

As a side note, I apologise in advance for the stagnant application replies - we're all extremely busy right now; [info]fiendie's computer is bust and the one she's borrowing has gross colours, [info]revanche has been on a hiatus for a while, I've got pretty important exams ahead of me, and [info]angeling is always busy, so you know. Once again, we're really sorry! I'll try to make it up as much as possible once my exams are over!

【COLOURING/MISC.】 [info]angeling | Shin Angyo Onshi
This post comes with many things!

Firstly, I'd like to apologize for my delay in voting lately. I've been busy, and the past few days I haven't been feeling too good - I took a shot at a vote today, but I'm not sure it's very good (sorry, [info]rabanastre!) so I'll be saving more votes (and critiques) for when I'm feeling a little better and actually can pay attention to your samples and such.

Secondly, here is an unfinished piece of work that is likely to remain unfinished due to a) laziness on my part; b) really stupid light source in the original scan; c) hueg. No .psd or .oe4 this time, sorry. :(

ANYWAY on to the next point of this post.

I was thinking of making an experimental "interactive tutorial" of sorts. I'll explain.

Basically, most long tutorials involve skipping a lot of steps, and if you screw something up in the middle you usually don't know WHAT you did wrong, right? Well, how about a tutorial where steps are updated one at a time, and between each step people following it have time to do it? For instance...

I make a tutorial and start with the most basic of things, picking a scan. And I post a picture of the scan I picked.

People who want to follow it also pick a scan, and post a picture of the scan they picked. Then we can comment back and forth and people can comment among themselves about the choice of scan. Then, a couple of days later, the next step is posted and explained - cleaning up the scan. And then everyone cleans up the scan, cue comments session, etc. Next step, base colors. I add base colors, post the next step, everyone does the same, more comments, feedback, etc etc, until the finished product.

I dunno, it sounds like it'll take a long time, but it seems more helpful to give feedback after each step than on the finished product as a whole. Most of the time when people ask me for help, they'll ask me how it's coming along every time they do something new to the picture, so it seems a more natural learning method than just "here's how it goes from start to finish, now do it!".

Would anyone be interested at all? I'd likely not post each step here to not flood the community, but I'd announce it here if enough people care. D:

【TUTORIAL】 Colouring in Photoshop
This is um, going to be um, a very different sort of tutorial. Because over the period I've been working on the tutorial, I've scrapped all the sample images I tried colouring (Mostly, I'd finish the skin and go aoidhglaksdhf fuck you at them). Then um, recently I started colouring in openCanvas rather than Photoshop, which is problematic because the techniques and tools employed are going to be different.

Because of that, I'll be doing two manga colouring tutorials - here, have the Photoshop one first, considering Photoshop's a more commonly employed program over openCanvas, and OC is impossible to explain steps for.

Anyway, here's how to go from:

to
Program: Adobe Photoshop CS3 (Translateable, but Photoshoppers have it easiest)
Level: Medium/Hard - Requires knowledge on how to create solid colour adjustment layers and/or apply layer masks to layers, as well as knowledge of clipping masks.

WARNING: This tutorial is image heavy, and extremely tl;dr aka long.

I'm actually kinda rusty sorry gaiz )

【QUICK HIATUS】
Hey guys, very quick announcement.

I'm really busy with a few other communities, some RL projects and other things, so I won't be voting on any applications this week. I'm sorry for the inconvenience! I promise to catch up with voting next week. ♥

( I'd also like to note that [info]atroquinine too is busy so if you don't get enough votes in your apps that may be why )X )
