Beginner sewing machine question

Hi, I am new to this community and to sewing. I figure the first step to learning to sew is finding a machine. Could anyone recommend a good beginner sewing machine for making lolita skirts and jsk with? (I can spend up to 300$ on a machine). Or even tell me what I should look for in a machine?

Is there anyone in New York who would be willing to give private lessons in sewing? ( I have a back problem and can't sit--so classes at FIT aren't an option right now). I would buy all the supplies and pay for lessons.

If I am posting to the wrong community, please feel free to delete this. I would really appreciate any help :)

Please help!

I do apologise for this horribly n00bish hope but I am rather desperate.

I have just acquired one of the Gothic & Lolita sewing books.

It has great instruction manuals such as this.

But being very new to this and all, I have no idea how to interperet it! Okay, so one can pretty much figure out the basic construction by looking at the pictures, but how do you get it to fit your measurements? I have a 90cm waist and I have NO IDEA how big I should cut this stuff.

Sorry to trouble you all, but if you'd be so kind as to guide me I'll happily post some scans from the book :)

Hi there, I'm not sure if this is considered Loli. In my opinion it could be, depending on how it was done. If it's too fringe, just let me know and I'll delete it.

*wipes sweat off of forehead* I spent all day making this hat (and the pin, too). I'm really proud of it, it's a lot different than my other hats that I've made so far, and I think I'm going to keep making them in this style. What do you guys think? Btw, click the pic to go to my store (which has more pictures).

For any crafty lolitas who like hello kitty, I just came across these recently: http://www.vansinkel.nl/index.php/cPath/167
They have DIY charms with Hello Kitty in a bonnet, a kimono, with candy, and other really cute stuff. It's a dutch site, and I'm not sure if they ship overseas, but I thought some of you may possibly be interested.

Looking for lace!

Hello all,

Been a member of this community for a while, but this is my first post, and a question at that.

For all of you seamstresses out there, where do you buy your lace?

I'm looking for black lace in a variety of patterns, and more importantly venise lace.

Ebay is not much help, my local Joann's is filled with beautiful white lace, but they are seriously lacking in black lace.

Do you guys know of any online stores that specialize in lace?

Thanks in advance.

New

my gf and i want to try and make some EGA and EGL outfits and maybe put together a tea party or something. i have like next to no skill when it comes to sewing other than basic stiching but i am very creative and come up with the most unique accesories from common parts or old things. i shop at hot topic usually so i am into the whole modern gothic thing but at the same time i love the EGA style. ive taken things from my pants and made gauntlets or other odd pieces from chains and such so im good on the creativity part but i just dont know where to start. i want to make a nice outfit for myself but like id like to learn to work on this type of thing. how much would it cost to make an outfit like those.

Hey, I'm new to this group, and uhhhh, yeah. I've been sewing for quite some time now and I was wondering if anyone had some patterns for making the basics of a lolita outfit. (i.e. - Headress, collar(thought I'm sure I could firgure it out myself, I'm sure you guys have some creative ideas :]), maybe the basics of making a big poofy loli skirt.

I'll have you know that I'm planning on using the pieces in a porfolio for a fashion college, so all help would be much appreciated :3

Ok, so it's only September and winter is far, far away, but it's never too early to start preparing, right?

A brainfart - since hte body loses incredible amounts of heat through the head, has anyone tried making lined, velvet/felt headdresses? Obviously they would not be near as warm as your average ugly!beanie or toque, but the idea seems worth a shot. They'd look _darling_ with those Baby earmuffs, even though I'm not that into sweet loli. Come to think of it, what about lolifriendly beanies?

a question...

hellooo, I am brand spanking new to this community.

I have just a quick question...

How can I make a black tube top look more like a corset? I don't know what to do with it, but I want to make it look gothloli-ish.

I can sew pretty well, so I dont think I should have many problems...

Thanks!

Hello!

I'm erica, 16, from sweden... Just wanted to say hello to everyone ^-^'
Anyway... I've been thinking a lot about maybe start selling some loli-clothes.... What do u think is the best way so start? I found a post where someone asked if she should start sew some clothes and sell or if ppl should order clothes first... Most ppl thought that it was a good idea to start sewing and maybe later sew after orders.. anyway.. do u think so as well?
I'm thinking a bit more about how to sell... e-bay and stuff like that or more like an internet-shop?

thanx for ur help / erica

What are you all working on right now?

I thought I'd post a little something that hopefully will make a discussion ^_^

So, my questions are:
1. What are you all working on right now? (as, what are you sewing)
2. If you got the inspiration from somewhere, (pictures, brands etc) please tell.
3. Did you do the pattern by yourself, or did you find it somewhere?
4. And if you're not working on anything at this moment, please tell us if you have any future projects! :)

So, here goes for my part:
1. I am right now working on a creme-white lolita skirt, which will have four layers, and lace at the end of every layer off course. I need it so I can match two blouses that I have. Haven't started with it yet, but I will as soon as I get some money.
2. I don't know where I got the inspiration, I just knew I needed a white skirt ^_^
3. The pattern is very easy, so I'm doing it myself.
4. In the future I am planning to make a replica of this skirt (http://www.babyssb.co.jp/shopping/skirt/129520/129520-iv.jpg) , and I will also make a white winter coat.

Yup, that's it for my part. But I change my mind all the time, so maybe I'll have even more projects in a week :P

Origami Strawberry!

Ok, so I'm on this origami kick right now. I'm searching thru eBay for paper, and I stumble across a kit for making origami strawberries! So, I jump right on over to Google and look it up. I find the directions and make one! It's super cute!

The hardest part was blowing it up. The last fold is really thick and doesn't hold well if you blow to hard. I'd suggest getting one of those compressed air things that you clean your keyboard with and useing that to blow the air in.

It's folded on the same principle as an origami flower... In fact if you turn it upside-down and put it on a stick and you have a rose bud!

You can find the directions here.
