bunny scarf tutorial

This is to make this bunny scarf+hood.

Materials:
1 1/4 yds x 45" fleece fabric*
1 1/4 yds x 45" lining fabric*
8" faux fur or bunny ear lining of your choice
1" ribbon (optional)
*If you bought 1 1/4 yrds off a bolt it would be twice as much as your need.

Cutting Instructions:
1. Begin by cutting out your fleece fabric. These measurements are completely made up so you may need to guestimate a bit ^_^;;;

2. Now cut out your lining - you won't need to cut out the ear pieces again for the lining unless you plan to line the ears with it.
3. Cut out ears from faux fur or other bunny ear lining (this will most likely make a mess, so be prepared).

Sewing Instructions:
1. Sew the inside of the fleece hood together with right sides facing each other.

2. Sew fleece bunny ear and bunny ear lining together with right sides facing each other.
3. Flip bunny ears right-side out and tuck the edges in.
4. Turn fleece hood right-side out and pin the bottom of the bunny ears about 3 or 4 inches from the top with the lining facing toward you and the fleece on the fleece hood (when you let the ears flop down the fleece part will be exposed and the fuzzy part will peek out from underneath).

5. Stitch the ears onto the fleece hood.
6. Loosely stitch the hood lining together.

7. Pin the two hood pieces together with right sides facing (make sure to tuck in the ears) and stitch around the entire perimeter of the hood+scarf.

8. Unstitch a small portion of the lining and turn the whole thing right side out.
9. Stitch lining back together where you had to unstitch it.
10. Top it with a bow on one ear (optional) ^_^

And you can do any kind of ear like this - cats, bears, monkey, etc.

And just so I don't have to update my updates box, I'm sticking this under tutorials for [info]lolita_handbook ^_^

I just wanted to add one thing to this. Instead of cutting fur with scissors, draw the patter pieces on the backing of the fur and take an exato and just cut the backing of the fur rather then the threw everything. By cutting it that way you cut down on 90% of the mess :)

your very welcome :D More people should know the trick for cutting faux fur so spread the news!

I'd leave the fabric store a lot cleaner more often if everyone knew that >-o

hehe I bought a ton of white fleece and soft, white, fuzzy baby fabric on the way home and am now hard at work XD Of course I sew by hand because I have never tried to even touch my sewing machine Mum bought me 3 years ago for Christmas...annnd I have no idea how to figure this pattern out because I'm a pretty novice sewer but hey! I'm trying, lol XD Hopefully will have it finished by tonight...might post pics of my far less successful version :D Thank you again for sharing the directions for your adorable creation! :)

I'm determined to make this now! Thank you so much! But I'm abit confused as to how you mean for us to stich on the bunny ears to the hood? I take it you do it by hand? Thanks again ^______^

You can actually just sew the ears straight on. Since the flop over you don't have to tuck them into seams or anything ^_^

One question: What type of material did you use to line the bunny ears? It looks really soft!!
And also, what do you mean by "lining fabric" for the inside of the hat? As in like more fleece only a different color? Or some other type of fabric?

I HOPE I bought the right stuff for this. ;_; I'm planning on making it soon, but I have two questions.

I was looking for lining fabric, and asked a Joanns employee to help me, and she led me to the "lining fabric" section. It was shiny and a bunch of different colors. Was I supposed to get stabilizer or interfacing (like is this a different name for them)? Or is this the right thing (I'm horrible with sewing terms)?

Also, I was thinking of making a few sets of ears and having them be interchangeable with velcro. Is this a good idea? I bought some velcro you need to sew on, and I would just cover the velcro up with ribbon when I don't have any ears attached.

Sorry for the questions! XD Thanks in advance~

I just selflined, but you can put whatever you want on the inside, whatever yo want touching your head. I dunno how well the velcro would work but interchangeable ears sounds cute.

Sorry for the late reply. ^^; Thanks for the help! I just have one question, which is going to sound extremely stupid since I'm a beginning sewer, but how do I get that exact shape (in the first picture) onto the fabric before I cut it?

I just made it up since it doesn't need to be exact. If you're worried just cut out some paper with similar dimensions to what you want.

That is one lovely scarf! I'll have too look out for you... if I'm correct those photos are taken in Scotland, where the scarf would be just perfect!
Now I must make a blue and while one!

When you say 'right side', do you mean the bit on the outside;;;...?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]carnet_atelier

Right sides means the sides you want facing outwards when you're done. There's a right and wrong side to fabric, if that makes sense.
