Quick paypal question
Uhh..sorry if this question is a little off-topic, but I read on someones thread that Paypal have adjusted their policy so that all payments will incur fees for sellers receiving funds, even if the payment is made to a 'Personal' paypal account.

Can someone please confirm for me if this is correct?
I can't seem to find this information elsewhere =\

Yes this is true. The whole thing about personal / premier account is pretty much useless now.

The only way to avoid fees now, is to get the buyer to PERSONAL TRANSFER the money to you. In the send money page, there is a PERSONAL tab, the buyer must click on that, select GIFT, or PERSONAL PAYMENT OWED (etc), and then on the next page, if the payment is coming from buyer's (1) paypal balance or (2) bank account, then no fees are incurred. If the money is coming from buyer's credit card, then they will have an option to either pay the fees themselves, or deduct the fee from their payment (i.e. you pay it for them). This system applies to both personal and premier account holders. Maybe fees will be higher for personal account holders, that I don't know.

Paypal sucks SO much. I might just switch to Google checkout sooner or later. :\

As far as I knew, cc payments to a personal account have a high fee percentage than to a premier account. Also, depending on your country, there are limits on how many cc funded payments that can be received by a personal account. For example, in the UK it's only 2 a year :s

Yes, that was the older system - I am not sure if this still applies. Frankly Paypal doesn't make it easy for people to understand their system.

And, Michelle, as far as I know, the system has changed for Paypal UK. I am not sure about any other countries :\

There's Revolution Money Exchange which doesn't have any fees (yet), only problem is that fewer people know about it so most will stick with PP. :>

Thanks so much for clarifying this!
It seems as though this Paypal policy is UK based only? Because I received a payment today with no trouble...

*sigh* who knows? They just like to screw us over, maybe.

Have you checked the payment details? Because for me, Paypal doesn't show they have deducted the fee on the front page :\ they only show in the details page - so initially I thought there was no problem for me...

That really, really sucks. I wonder what they have against the UK and Europe?
Yeah, I checked the details just in case but it all seems normal..

Did paypal automatically add the funds to your account, fee deducted and all, or did they send you a confirmation email, and you declined it because it incurred fees [same as when you receive a CC payment on a personal account paypal does not automatically add the payment to your balance, they ask for confirmation]

Everything seemed fine - I get an email saying I got paid, go into the main screen and the money is there. Because it is a personal account, it doesn't even have the fees column in the table. But the amount in the table will be the amount minus the fees that they have deducted from the total. There is no declining option etc.

Did you invoice the person that paid you?

Anyway this is apparently the Uk system now. If that's not confusing, I don't know what is. :\

It depends on your country. In Germany, for example, they always charge fees, they always have and (probably) always will. If the policy has changed in some country, it might still not apply for you! Best thing would be you look up the fees in th "Help & FAQ" section.

That's happened to my PP account...

It says that for purchases you don't get charged for sending money but you do for recieving it (1.4% to 3.4% + £0.20 GBP)

But, if you don't send an invoice and the buyer sends payment as a "personal transfer" then fees are only applied to CC payments and either the sender or the reciever can cover the fees (3.4% + £0.20 GBP)

I have a UK one so I don't know if that's the same for other countries. You can find out about your own fee stuff by the link at the bottom of the PP page that says "Fees" when you're logged in.
