Alice Bow Tutorial

After many failed attempts I finally got it right, or at least how I like it. But I felt frustrated that I couldn’t find an easy tutorial on Alice bows. So I decided to make one. I want to thank

[info]lacey_dolly for these measurements I got them from here if you would like to visit her original post. http://community.livejournal.com/egl/10158618.html
I hope this helps and forgive the threads in the picture I was on my way out when I put the bow together.

Base (cut 2)
10 1/4 inches wide [tall], by 7 3/16 inches length

Top (cut 2)
6 3/8 inches wide/tall by 8 3/4 inches length

Center (cut one on fold)
3 3/16 inches wide by 3 7/8 inches length

Once you have your pieces cut out start with the base. with right sided together pin both pieces and sew. I’m not really sure on the seam allowance I always just use the edge of the foot and match it to the edge of the fabric. Leave a small corner open so you can turn it inside out. Also you can add lace to the base but I was in a hurry so I didn’t. just follow instructions on the Top bow part below and add lace the same way. Now turn right side out and press seams open. Now set it aside

All right lets start with the top of the bow. My favorite part. After cutting out the pieces get a piece of lace 6 3/8 inches long and pin it to the right side of the fabric. Make sure to pin the lace with the little loop side facing in Like so: (please forgive my horrible drawings)

Now place the other piece of fabric atop of the lace MAKE SURE RIGHT SIDES ARE TOGETHER. And pin and sew. Remember to leave a small corner open so you can turn it right side out, and press.

Horay! we are almost done. Take your piece you made for the center and fold it long wise so the sides match, pin and stitch. Leave both end open we will sew those together later. (the dotted line show where to sew)

OK its time to put it all together now! Set the Top layer atop the bottom and pinch them together in the middle it should look something like this:

Lastly place the middle on the bow like above and put it as tight around it as you please. And just stitch it shut. I slipped mine on a headband but you may use a ribbon or what ever you like. Good luck and I hope I was some help. This is how mine turned out…
<3

Also one more way to finish off your bow is to place the top layer and inch above the bottom and sew them together. then fold it up like a paper fan and place the mddle around it. i have not yet tried this but it seems effective and thanks to  [info]kaorte who was kind enough to share this advice with us. here is a picture she made to help us understand:

Can I print this pattern out as it will be easier for me to work from that way? I wouldn't want to print ot out without your permission it really it good. If i want to make slightly smaller alice bows I just scale down the measurements right?

yep thats fine. thats why i made it so other people can use it. the drawings are not to scale though. yea that should work if you scale it down.

I have a couple suggestions. Just from experience. I will use pictures, since it is hard to explain.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2397/2373826249_5e0c84405b_o.jpg
Basically the first bit shows that you should put the top layer about an inch above the bottom and then sew them together, and the second part shows how you should fold the bow. Pinching it works, but I have found that this method is how brand head bows are made. It just makes it look a lot more like an alice bow. :3

Thanks!
As for the bottom being smallish- I used different dimensions than the tutorial gives- I was using remnents and there was no way I had enough to do it like it said.

im only a little concerned about the seams showing in the first onethough

it still turned out well
and on the second one if you clip the corners. (make a small triangle cut on the seam.) then it wont be so curved. also always iron open your seams. things just look nicer that way.
they look adorible though ^^

Here's the bow I madehalf using the tutorial and half making it up as I went along.

I think it's my 5th try at making bows? Before, I used to stuff the bow with leftover bits so that they would literally stick out like no body's business. I finally made one where I'm happy with the results<3

thanks!

its so cute. i love pearls! you can also put interfacing on each layer and bend them to what you want or make them stick up as well.
im glad it worked for you.

I'll actually be using this in the very near future, I'm planning on making two matching headbows for my boyfriend and I. ((His will be a joke, but I'm still making him wear it because it'll look adorable on him. Maybe one day I shall make him wear kodona...)) Thought, I'm slightly stumped on where to find two plain white headbands... I've looked in WalMart, and I only see colored ones ((purple, green, pink, etc.))... ANy suggestions?

(Reply to this) (Parent)(Thread)

[info]layer_cake_lie
2008-06-25 11:09 am UTC (link)
it depends on the size i got a pack from wal mart (although i have no idea where the other two went) and the size of your hair. i made another one out of pink and white material and i use the one grey headband i have. my hair was curled into ringlets and the headband wasnt visible at all. but you could also go to a craft store and get some hair combs or look at a different store like longs or something...
Clares has cute headbands as well you can find a white one and just tear off the ribbon or something.

Thank you so much for the ideas. n_____n
We don't have a Longs here, but I grew up in Cali, so I know what it is and miss it dearly... *come back, my beautiful $3 flip flopsssss....!* I will try Walgreens and look more carefully at WalMart again.
