HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
Last night I went to go see Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist with Robyn, it was SO GOOD. I loved it so much, and Michael Ceras cute boy charm in the movies never gets old. The soundtrack for that CD is going to be so amazing too. Then in the previews they played one of the twlighit teaser trailers, I freaked out. It was all silent and I heard the music and I screamed "OMG!" and then started freaking out. Bahah I am so weird.
The night before I went to see Quarantine with my brother.. don't go see that movie it is so stupid and awful and not even that scary. The only time I got scared was when one of the characters threw up which was so disguting I hate when they put that stuff on the tv, its so gross.
Last night I also went to the Strat with Karen and Shannyn and some guy they know from Edmonton Katimavik. It was super super fun, and I didn't get sick from the strat Vodka, thank goodness. Karen and Shannyn are like super bffs and I'm scared that I will eventually get completely outed, Karen and I suck at getting together, mostly because I am lame and never have time for anything.
Yesterday my mom and I went to go take a look at this amazing basement suite, it is SO awesome and beautiful (and pretty much perfect for us). I really hope we get it, if we do were moving in on November 1st. I mean well her and by brother are and well I think I am moving in with them for a little while, my dad is so weird I have no idea what he is doing or if he is keeping this house or what. I am kind of just stuck in the middle and its really irritating. I wish he would make up his mind.

Plan B Is Total Panic!!! |

Good News: When I talked to my thesis advisor, she was amazing. Lots of encouragement, lots of discussing how I can limit my scope to make my essay more effective, and omg... the encouragement. Just constantly referring to the contribution my thesis is going to make to the research, about where my thesis will be in the literature, about how important this research will be in the future... just... wow. I've never felt so thrilled and afraid, ever.
Bad News: OMG FORMAL THESIS PROPOSAL NEEDS TO BE IN ON WEDNESDAY I AM GOING TO DIE.

It's been about five days since I wrote an open letter to the organizers of the All Candidate's Forum at Dal.
I haven't heard back officially about the letter I wrote the Megan Leslie Campaign, just a verbal acknowledgement that they had read it from the Campaign Organizer.
The first person to email me back was Mark, the VP (Education) of Dal's SU, and the main organizer behind the event.
Mark's email has all the right noises in it - we're sorry this happened, it was an accessible site, we did schedule an interpreter but the person who requested it ended up sick and the interpreters didn't want to send someone if there was no guarantee. They also got a lot of complaints about the format of the forum and are planning on having written questions next time. He's very sorry if he offended the disabled community. (I've included the whole text of the email at the bottom of this post, behind a cut, incase you want to read it.)
( a bit of reaction from me about Mark's email )
The next email I got, later that night (after 10 p.m., which tells me that Darryl is going home from whatever, then checking and answering his email - dude, when does he sleep? Maybe less than I do!) was from the Green Party Candidate, Darryl Whetter.
Darryl's response was the shortest one I got, and I have to admit, it felt like the most honest, the least run-through-someone-first. That's probably not fair as well. Darryl's response, though, is *personal* - he talks about his father's chronic illness. He also says he'll talk to the Dal SU about future events being accessible. (This will, of course, be a more important thing if he gets elected. But it's a nice thought, you know?)
I think the response from Megan's campaign (NDP) came in yesterday, or maybe the day before (the days are all running a bit together in the Anna-verse), and was sent from someone else's email address. This isn't really the End Of The World - I used to work for a guy who wrote all the letters you would get from the MLA he worked for, and it's very common. It was just.. jarring, because I didn't know why I was getting an email about the topic from someone I'd never met until I saw it was "signed" Megan.
It's short, sweet, to the point, brings up the interpreter issue and expresses satisfaction that Mark emailed me back with my concerns. Pretty standard, which isn't a complaint so much as an observation. I'm frustrated that there's been nothing about my earlier complaints about someone telling Don to basically play disabled for a camera. I have no idea what's going on with that at all. I don't want to be angry because it's a really busy election campaign, but if not now, then when? It's certainly not the first time I've brought up issues with how the NDP treats people with disabilities. I'd like it to be the last, and not because I just got disgusted with them and gave up.
Catherine's email (Liberal) came in this morning. It's also short (other than Mark's, they all were). I'm kinda embarrassed to admit that I like this one the most. Catherine basically says "I noticed this to, there were a lot of problems with that forum, and I promise that I won't be participating in any more forums, either as a candidate or as a sitting MP, that aren't fully accessible". She also talks about equity of access, as opposed to equal access.
I really felt Catherine got it, you know? That this isn't just about placating the crazy-lady who's been thrown out of a rally this week (um... yeah, I got thrown out of a rally this week because "Make Poverty History" isn't "on message" for a "Rally Around The Leader". Since every leader has been in Halifax this week, that'll leave things suitably vague). I just really felt that Catherine understood what I was going for, which isn't just a pat on the head but a real change for the better.
Who knows.
Your interpretation of these emails may be different than mine, and I've included them here. I'd like any thoughts you have on the subject in general or the emails in particular.
I feel this fight is going to get harder before it gets easier. It really shocked me how completely inaccessible the microphone was for this forum. I don't know how things were for the Social Justice Forum on Thursday, since I fell asleep so hard Don couldn't wake me before it (and then when I woke up for work it took me 20 minutes to find the energy to talk, so yes, sleeping = win), but I hope it was better.
( emails behind the cut, in order described above )

Marja Mattlar - Lintu |

Compared to the European imports shop in Calgary, the local one around here totally sucks except that this one has more fresh German-style sausages.
It doesn't have as much Finnish stuff, but it does cost a bit less. Uh, the mustard does, at least. I don't remember the prices for the other stuff in Calgary off-hand. They didn't have any Finnish coffee, or chocolate :(
But at least now I know where to get my mustard when I need more of it :)
Here are some notes: * Turun sinappia (125g): $3.69 * Tyrkisk peber (180g): $5.09 * Salmiakki (Halva brand, 250g): $5.39 Of course they have Panda liquorice and Finn Crisp and Fazer crispbread but aside from the Fazer crispbread the other two are readily available at other shops. (Note: The Fazer company that makes crispbread is different from the Fazer company that makes chocolates and candy.)
I may or may not have mentioned back in April that I came across a second-hand book store that had a couple of old Finnish books lying around. One was a book about some sort of Finnish history and the other was a book with scenic photos. The latter book has text in Finnish, Swedish, German, and English, so although I couldn't bring myself to buy it in April, I felt like I could now, and maybe learn something (linguistically) from the texts :)
It's pretty old, © 1977. It appears to have been a gift from a Finnish family visit: on the inside, it says, "Family Ross W. Wein / with many thanks for the beatiful[sic] memories / Merry Christmas 1983 / Kimmo + family".
In other news, the Nobel Peace Prize went to a Finn this year :)

Connecticut Supreme Court Overturns Ban On Gay Marriage!!!!
The court ruled 4-3 Friday that gay and lesbian couples cannot be denied the freedom to marry under the state constitution, and Connecticut's civil unions law does not provide those couples with the same rights as heterosexual couples.

I need to restart this list because the old list was too cluttered with all of the mp3 stuff. This list will only list my legit discs. I'll put a * next to the discs I have with me at the dorm. Since I'm not compiling this at home, the part of the list containing discs I don't have here will be incomplete.

| Kevin Smith |
[09 Oct 2008|02:25pm] |
So we had an Evening with Kevin Smith last night. If you ever seen the dvd's, it's basically a couple hour Q&A session with the man himself. Very fun. The questions themselves were pretty standard, and any lesser teller of tales would have taken only a minute or so answering even the most "difficult" of them. Example: "Would you consider doing a superhero movie?" Or "Have you ever been mad enough to fight someone?"
Even though he'd usually answer the question with a yes or no, the elaboration and backstory he'd give for each answer would go on for a good twenty minutes. And that's why we all came. It wasn't for the answers to strange, banal, or even cool questions. It was for the opportunity to see a master story-teller come up with material on the spot. Stories ranged from talking about his movies and actors (as one would expect) to gay sex to smoking weed with Seth Rogen to straight sex to family life to wheelchair sex to being so fat he broke a toilet to dog sex. In other words, a colorful variety to say the least.
Even so, my favorite answers were the shortest of the evening...When asked what advice he'd give to a novice filmmaker with no connections or ideas on how to break into film, he said simply, "Make Clerks." And when a budding comic writer asked what advice he'd give to break into comic books, Kevin shrugged and said, "I dunno, create Spiderman for the first time." Honestly, what else could he say? He created something worthwhile and got lucky. That's about all any of us can hope for...

No. I have to say that it's a moot point to even think of an answer because of all the other bubble-gum pop stuff that came after The Beatles, none of them ever had the kind of staying power and meaning as The Beatles. They were the first and the only to go from crafting simple bubble-gum pop sentiments like "I wanna hold your hand" to the perfect love song "Something" We still listen to their music because it resonates and it is universal.
We are still discussing who is the better song writer: Lennon or McCartney. We're still wondering at the closed complexity that produced Harrison's songs and how he was bold enough to bring in Clapton to play the guitar parts on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" We're still mourning the loss of Lennon and his potential and we still give McCartney props.
I don't see anyone giving Britney Spears props other than being able to writhe around in skimpy outfits lipsyncing to a crappy pre-recorded tracks. Or how Madonna has an uncanny ability to sniff out trends and market the shit out of them for profit.
So yeah, call me a music snob, but the ones that are and always will be the center of pop music are The Beatles because above everything, they had heart and emotion and they didn't manufacture the emotions that went into their music.
So yeah.
