hole-y crusade
So this is rather short notice but it is really really slightly important to me.

It involves photographs, the web and you.

Beloved photo sharing site flickr.com added Video sharing capabilities to its site. Gah! Personally, that's just icky. Go to youtube or some other lesser type site for such filth.

It turns out I am not the only one who feels this way. A recent article on Wired suggests there is a worldwide movement to get flickr's attention to remove the video sharing and get free donuts.

Sure. You've probably seen similar "If X gets 20,000 people to join he/she will Y" groups. But flickr has taken notice of this global activism and has replied with free donuts if 2500 people join. 2773 people have joined so far. The donuts; they will be liberated and eaten (in San Francisco).

Ok. So you are thinking WTF has this to do with Edmonton?

Well. There exists a flickr group to photojournal the event on April 16th and various geographic hotbeds of dough-eaters are gathering to eat donuts and take photos to make their point. I will be participating in this activity and I call upon others to take up the cause. All you have to do is get a donut. Take pictures. Upload. Bring about revolution.

I don't understand. What's wrong with being able to put videos on your Flickr page?

It's wrong! Inconceivable! Blasphemous! Absurd! Silly! :-)

But what is really important is... WE DEMAND DONUTS!

Personally I support video on Flickr, and the way it was implemented.

I understand the concerns of group mods, however, and hope that they are given the opportunity to block videos from their groups if they so desire.

As for me, I do like to take short videos on my camera from time to time, and feel they fit in well with my photo sets.

Anyone who plays cards like concerns about "copyright infringement" or "pornography" in this game obviously has never spent time exploring Flickr to any degree.

Basically I think this is all just chicken little, straw men, slippery slopes and red herrings.

Bbbbut... Donuts!

You do raise an interesting point I suppose, if it works for you do it.

I just really liked that it was a photo-based site. Maybe if YouTube did a similar tag like thing... Oh wait.. Don't they aready?

Anyways. Donuts. Free the donuts. :-)

(this whole things is just in fun)

I know it's just for fun, but the people that are calling for Flickr to tear down the video feature are serious, and I seriously disagree with them.

Sure, YouTube does videos, but I wouldn't call it the same service on any level. The intent and target audiences are different, and YouTube doesn't have any sense of community that I could find. That community feeling, to me, is the key that sets Flickr apart from other photo sharing/hosting sites, and it is what will set Flickr apart from video sharing sites, always.

This isn't personally directed at you, but I figure this is as good a time and place as any to state how I feel on the matter. =)

Call me old Web 2.0 fashioned, but I actually would like to see video not on flickr.

What next? Cats and dogs living together? :-)

I agree. The videos I've seen thus far on flickr is footage from people's digital cameras (you know how they come with a video setting these days). I find it to be a pretty interesting peek into my contacts' lives. (For example one girl secretly taped 10 seconds of a Walmart employee playing with toys on the job) And, from what I understand, flickr has a short time allotment to encourage that type of stuff.

On the other hand, donuts ARE tasty. Mmm. Donuts.

I'm kinda on the fence with the whole video thing. I've seen some that were good and fit in as part of a photoset. And some that just plain sucked and had no contextual reason for being there other than someone used their camera to take it. Keep it out of the groups unless the group specifically allows it, but on a personal page...meh.

Now as to donuts, might be a good reason for a photo adventure. And then post them in [info]edmontonphoto as well as flickr for all to see.

Did not know about [info]edmontonphoto. May have to check it out.

To also tie this back in to being Edmonton-ish related; I discovered that flickr now has a nifty mapping thing where you can pin point your photos geographically. And it works if you don't have one of those handy GPS toys!

They've had that for a while. It's a lot of fun, and somewhat addictive. I've spent numerous hours going back to old photos and pinning them on the map. It's a bit more challenging when they were taken way out in the bush and you don't have a GPS tho. =P

If Wired is to be believed, the donut day arose from those mocking all the anti-video crusaders, not in support of them:

After Flickr rolled out a feature that introduced video to the popular photo sharing site, thousands of Flickr members protested the service by signing petitions and joining groups like No Video On Flickr. A facetious group called We Demand Free Doughnuts Group, emerged calling for free doughnuts as a way to mock the demands of the anti-video crusaders. The group mockingly stated "If we get 20,000 people to join the group Flickr will be forced to give us free donuts!"

How is buying a donut tomorrow and photographing it supporting "the revolution", exactly?

Because donuts are tasty and eating them for a cause (good or stupid) makes it a good thing, even when we are on a diet.
