Just heard a rumour that the Mission is apparently off tonight as Studio 24 has kicked it out. Can anyone shed some light on this?

...and does anyone know what the hell to do now on a Saturday?!

Offical comment from Dunk, as EMS moderator:
"Mission relaunched at Studio 24 as Retribution

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Retribution - Its time to take back whats rightfully yours.

As of tonight the Mission at Studio 24 will now be known as Retribution,
Two floors of the greatest rock, metal and alternative anthems, featuring a new DJ lineup of old and new faces.

Upstairs has been redubed as Hades and will run weekly playing the best of metal. Think Anthrax to Avenged Sevenfold, Maiden to Mastodon, Zakk Wylde to Zyklon.

The main floor as always will bring you the best rocking dancefloor fillers, with a refreshed playlist and DJ line up.

If thats not enough to tempt you out on a wet saturday night the first 50 people get free entry and we've got some amazing drinks promos till 1am."

That doesn't sound quite right to me, how can the mission relaunch as something else is Dave and Colin aren't involved?

Id guess some of the DJ's will be the same.

The thing is though it was Dave and Colin's club, so how can it the mission in any incarnation without them being involved?

Id say theyve only said that to avoid confusion over what the club is, to be honest the less it has to do with old one the better.

I hope for varied music and an actual IDing policy for a start.

no, I'd say they've done it to generate confusion - people have a certain loyalty to a club like the mission that they've been going to for years, and if they get the idea that this new club is the mission but revamped, then they're more likely to want to go along.

Maybe the mission was a bit stagnant and in need of some new ideas, but the guys who use to run it are effectively out of a job now; imagine spending years building up a business only for someone to call you and tell you they've taken your premises off of you and installed a new, very similar business that's going to take all your customers. That's pretty much what's happened here, it seems.

'imagine spending years building up a business only for someone to call you and tell you they've taken your premises off of you and installed a new, very similar business'

Kind of like what happened to us in Victoria St when S&N didn't even tell us it was our last night until the night was over but we were all pretty positive of it then.

Oops, pretty positive it was the last night by then is what I meant.

Kinda like that, but not really - S&N closed the rocking horse and rebranded it after all. If the mission had shut because S24 had closed, then it would have been sad, but so be it.

It wasn't rebranded by S&N though, they sold it and most of the staff lost their jobs as they didn't bother their arse relocating them. But aye, it's still crap just to turf them out and take their livelihood.

oh, I thought S&N still owned it but they just rebranded it as Espionage.

When was the last time they attempted any kind of promotion effort? Flyers? Posters? I can recall some 2 summers ago.

The majority of the people that go there dont recognise any difference between the mission and the building itself, I dont think 'loyalty' is going to be an issue for very many people, especially when its clear that the new night is far sueperior.

True, the new night is likely to do well, as long as they get the promotion and music policy right. That wasn't really my point, though.

My point was that they cant complain about having it 'taken away' when apparently they were asked to sort the numbers and still did no promotional work.

It's not a relaunch, it's quite clearly a replacement. It just makes the Studios management sound better to call it a relaunch...

An actual music policy and some imagination in the playlist now seem to be happening, as well as trying to remove the stagnation of many years.

Seemed to be less underagers also.

A massive improvement already, I have high hopes of actually feeling like I want to go to this on a regular basis.

Woo. That alone makes me want to go back :)
Last time I was there, I felt like I was one of the oldest people in there!
