Just looking out of my window from the Chrytal Macmillan Building, George Square, I see a yellow helicopter that I think is Royal Air Force and there is an ambulance parked near it. Any clue as to what has happened/is happening?

| organising the move |
[Jul. 14th, 2009|11:22 am] |
Dear edinburgers,
Unfortunately I am leaving the beloved Edinburgh for Glasgow and now have to arrange for my move... was wondering if anyone could advise on a few things
- if my friends volunteer to drive a car for me to move my stuff I guess that would be a question of just renting a car - any cheap place recommended?
- in case the above option doesn't work I'll have to use the services of some firms that provide cars + drivers? I wonder again what these are and how much that would cost
- as I don't have much stuff to move, mostly books and clothes, maybe I could just take a taxi? How much is that?
Thanks!!!
an update: another exotic suggestion - to post some heavy stuff like books! any tips on this? |

| | hopeful | ] | Anyone doing this? I am starting a new job in Castle Brae, a business park/estate just outside of Dunfermline. The nearest rail is Rosyth Rail and there appears to be some bus symbols around Castle Drive, within the business park, but I've no idea whether those buses go to Edinburgh or not.
If anyone's got experience on this kind of commute, I'd be much obliged for your anecdotes and advice. |

| Nurseries/Childminders? |
[Jul. 13th, 2009|05:20 pm] |
So, I'm looking into childcare for my daughter starting in November-ish... can anyone recommend (or metion places to avoid) a nursery or childminder in the Craigleith/New Town area? We live between Craigleith and Drylaw in an area that doesn't seem to have a name, my husband works in the New Town and I'll be working in Cannonmills... we want to have bubs be looked after somewhere that's either near work or on the way... any advice, beyond "win the lotto, so one of you can stay home with her"?
Or a link to the post on this sort of thing that was made a few months ago would be helpful-- I couldn't find it in the memories or reading through the months I thought it might be in... (there is one from 2005, but I'm hoping places have improved since then...) |

[Jul. 13th, 2009|04:07 pm] |
Hello again!
You guys where so helpful last time... but I've got another question for you. I had a look but couldn't find anything about Easter Road. I've found what seems like the prefect flat near a B&Q shop on Easter Road. Is this an ok area? I'm heading down to view it Wednesday... and hopefully pay a deposit.
Thanks again to all the people who offered me places, but I recently found out that the chances of me getting a transfer with Asda are slim... so my budget had to go even lower...
Thanks in advance! |

| Edinburgh Festival reviews on Twitter |
[Jul. 13th, 2009|01:01 pm] |
If anyone's thinking of going to any Edinburgh Festival shows this year, I've created a simple tool that lets you post reviews to Twitter and see the most highly (and lowly) rated shows.
It's at edfest09.com.
Any ideas, questions or comments, let me know. Also, if you're a festival organizer, media outlet or other organization who might be interested in taking it on, or know someone who might, drop me an email; my address is in the footer of the site. The design can be changed to fit anything you're already using. |

| Festival Accommodation at Short Notice?? |
[Jul. 12th, 2009|09:24 pm] |
I realise this is a long shot, but figured I'd make an enquiry anyway.
A Canadian associate of mine is considering coming to Edinburgh between 14-20 August - right in the middle of the Festival madness, naturally! Hotels are usually booked up well before now, and the few that are left are prohibitively expensive. I'd let him stay at my place but it's my son's first birthday celebrations and my small flat will already be stuffed to bursting!
So...does anyone have, or know of a room he might rent out for the time he's considering? Or any tips on cheap hotels/hostels/apartments that might be of use? He's happy to stay anywhere so long as it's reasonably quiet and he doesn't have to actually share the room. I can vouch for the guy being very pleasant, sensible and personable - he's an older professor at a reputable Canadian university, and a really interesting, nice person.
Any ideas would be well appreciated!
Thanks,
Gill x |

| where to buy sambal oelek |
[Jul. 7th, 2009|06:47 pm] |
I posted recently asking where on earth I can buy sambal oelek now that I can no longer find it in Lidl or Waitrose. Or I meant to, but somehow I managed to post it in my own journal instead of edinburgers. Ahem. You can see the original post here.
In case you're wondering it's red chilli paste. If you've ever been to Amsterdam and had a rijstafel at an Indonesian restaurant you've probably had it.
Anyway, the answers were all really helpful, thanks, and this is how it worked out:
- You can find it in Tesco in Broughton Road. However it's in comical wee jars which hold just about enough for one plate of Nasi Goreng as far as I'm concerned :-) If you only want a little bit of gooey red chilli goodness, this is the one for you.
- It's in the Hing Sing supermarket on Leith Walk. We didn't buy it there either though as their version - Yeo's I think? - has sugar in it, which is a no-no for diabetics.
- It's also in the other and bigger Chinese supermarket further down Leith Walk, Pat's Chung Ying. We bought a jar of Lucullus brand sambal oelek there: lots of chilli and no sugar in the ingredients.
- Lupe Pinto's in Tollcross stocks Fox's sambal oelek, and it also has lots of chilli and no sugar. Lupe Pinto's probably had the biggest selection of Dutch/Indonesian spicy stuff, plus a very helpful guy behind the counter, but Pat's also had a good selection.

Does anyone remember a couple of years ago, there was someone running a group called We Want Your Art? She was originally an employee of the clothing shop that was on the Southbridge, opposite the Edinburgh Uni law building.
I handed over a few pieces, and the whole thing did seem to be quite successful. However I've heard nothing, and when I checked recently the site was gone.
It didn't seem to be a big corporate thing - just someone doing it in their spare time, but if it's all defunct I'd love to have my work back.
If memory serves, the person running it was called Amber. |

If you have a wheelie bin, leave it out and they'll get to it in time. If you leave out black bags, you are supposed to take them back in and re-present on your next scheduled collection day.
The council refuse workers are currently working to rule due to a dispute regarding changes in their pay structures. They have a point with some of it, other bits I'm not so sure. Either way the gulls, pigeons and foxes are gonna have a ball till it's resolved, so lets hope they reach an agreement soon! |

[Jul. 5th, 2009|10:56 am] |
A Day of Spiritual Dance (and Walk), near Peebles Dancing in a beautiful rural location near the River Tweed on Saturday 8th August
I've booked my local village hall for a day of dancing, meditation practices, hopefully yummy food (this is up to you!) and a walk by the river.
We'll draw on a repertoire which includes dances honouring Christian, Jewish, Islamic, Celtic, Buddhist, Hindu, Native American and Sikh sources - although we possibly won't cover all of that ground in a single day. We'll also experiment with some of the 112 meditation practices given by Lord Shiva in the text "Vigyan Bhairav Tantra" which appears in the book "Zen Flesh, Zen Bones" compiled by Paul Reps.

| Moving to Edinburger soon |
[Jul. 4th, 2009|11:16 pm] |
Hello all!
I'm Nicki, 23, currently live in Aberdeen... but I'm actually Northern Irish, moved to Scotland when I was 17. I'm moving down to Edinburgh hopefully in the last 2 weeks of Aug (all depending on confirmation of funding, getting a job transfer and of course... finding somewhere to live!).
You all seem like a nice bunch so I hope you don't mind me asking for a little advise. For my first year there I'll be attending Steveson College, access to languages (with hope for doing Japanese at Edinburgh Uni the following year), and hopefully (if i get a transfer in time) be working at the Asda Chesser.
I've never been to that area of Edinburgh... or anywhere of Edinburgh really, so i've been mainly looking for rooms in the Sighthill (which i've been told to avoid), Craiglockhart, Water of Leith, Slateford Road and Dalry (edit: sorry on google map it looked at if it read "Dariy" till i just now zoomed all the way in.) Road areas. Should I avoid any of these? Dairy road seems like the best place as there will be buses going to both the college and work, but water of Leith I could walk to work and just get a bus to college. I'll be coming down in like a week or two to scope the place out and hopefully look at rooms.
Finding rooms is hard, the only real place I can look is gumtree. I just read psi 's horror story of their gumtree flatmate and now i'm worried. My other problem with gumtree is they all want you to move in RIGHT NOW. Which I can't do. I can't afford to move down till I know i'll get my funding and tranfare sorted.
Any other advise you can think to give me?
OH and please do feel free to add me if you like the same things i do (anything Japanese related, anime, manga, cosplayers, sewing, weight watchers, video games, posh dresses to get pished in... lots of geeky things), I'll be needing some Edinburger buddies!
Thanks in advance!

| Anyone lose a goth cross necklace/pendant on the Royal Mile Friday? |
[Jul. 4th, 2009|10:43 pm] |
|
My husband found a rather large goth-style cross necklace/pendant on the ground in the vicinity of St Giles's on Friday. It doesn't appear to have precious metals or stones, it has a large number of costume stones in it. I know this is a long shot, but trying anyway. Don't see much point in handing it into the police because the materials aren't valuable and so they likely wouldn't consider it an object of value... if no-one replies saying it's theirs, anyone know any other way I could try and reunite this with its owner? I'd imagine they want it back. |

| Letting agent/ex-flatmate HELL |
[Jul. 3rd, 2009|03:18 pm] |
Last November I moved in to a flat I found on Gumtree with a girl I did not know. Initially she seemed fine, but as time went on it was clear she was not eh...right in the head.
Stupidly, I agreed to open a joint account with her just after I moved in, so we could pay our rent from it. In the end we never used it and paid separately. She quit her job in February and took out £160 of the overdraft on the account (limit is £200), promising to repay it when she got a new job/giro/money from parents. She never did.
In March I lost my job and decided to move somewhere cheaper. Initially my ex-flatmate was fine with this and said she was sorry I was leaving. Then we received a letter from the agency saying the landlord had had enough of her and wanted the flat vacated. Did I mention she went 3 months without paying her rent, and never mentioned it, even after she received an eviction notice?
After she was told to move out, she became increasingly malevolent and threatening towards me. I was pushing a wardrobe over my door at night (no lock on door) because I was so worried she was going to snap. During a 'moment of clarity', she admitted she had been hospitalised with schizophrenia in her native Poland several times, and had stopped taking her medication!
She also refused to take any money for bills (electricity and gas both in her name) until she had her 1/2 of the money together...I don't understand why.
I moved out at the end of April and I *STILL* haven't got my deposit back.
EPM are our agent and they are refusing to give me my deposit back until they see the utility bills are at £0.00
They know what this girl is like - she has come into their office numerous times ranting and shouting at them, and I have cc'd them on threatening emails I was sent by her.
Ex-flatmate refuses to budge on paying the bill. She won't show the bills to me or the letting agent. As far as I know she is still out of work so she has no way of paying her share of the bills. The letting agent say "we can't get involved". But surely they or the landlord can contact the utility company and get a bill issued to them, and take her half out of her deposit?
Is it legal for them to have me over a barrel like this when I have been 100% compliant and showed them my share of the council tax has been paid, and I always paid my rent on time?
In addition to this, ex-flatmate has never paid any money into the joint account, and the bank won't remove my name from the account because it's been in arrears for 4 months. 2 weeks ago I received a letter stating if money was not paid into the account in the next 7 days, they would refer the matter to a debt collection agency.
The next day I went in and paid a token £20 into the account because obviously I am worried about my own credit rating!
The day after this - despite her not having used the account since February - she withdraws/steals £20, and another £20 the next day. So now the account is at its limit. Luckily the bank have agreed to freeze the account and invalidate her card.
But what can I do about my deposit? I owe roughly £200 in bills so I am going to pay that into the joint account so it can be closed - that is my priority.
At first, EPM were helpful about this but now they are saying there's literally nothing they can do about my deposit! But I don't understand this - they're not DOING ANYTHING with the deposit, they're not using it to pay the bills on the flat, they're not witholding it because of any damages....
Is there any council/government/legal agency I can contact regarding this as i'm just hitting a brick wall with EPM now. |

| electronic games for children... |
[Jul. 3rd, 2009|08:34 am] |
We´ve just arrived home for three weeks holiday having had the flight from hell from South America because there was no seat back screens on our flight. We´re assuming that Iberia won´t have upgraded their equipment in the meantime, and are facing 14 hours back with bored kids.
Does anyone know anywhere in Edinburgh I could buy a couple of Nintendo DSs? Refurbed or otherwise cheap would be my preference! They don´t have to be the latest model, my kids aren´t so sophisticated!
I have looked at ebay, but shipping is a bit of an issue since I not staying at my own address.

The Mem needs to get the car MOT'ed. Where's best , and where's to be avoided?
Ideally on the south side of town, even out as far as Dalkeith and surrounds if needed, so it can be fitted in around work but all places considered.
If they do Ford exhausts too that'd be a bonus as it's looking somewhat unhealthy ( even to my untrained eye so it must be bad!). |

[Jun. 29th, 2009|02:31 pm] |
Do not, I repeat DO NOT rent your flat from Grant Management.
They have already accused us of not paying our rent (when we did), of not providing home insurance details or showing them we knew what we were going to do about it (when we did), of us barefacedly lying to them about some details of the contract when they had JUST told us the details over the phone not a day before, and a level of surly, brusque rudeness which makes dealing with them a thoroughly unpleasant business.
We are *two days* into our new let and the level of incompetence these morons have displayed compared to every other flat company I've dealt with in Edinburgh - even The Flat Company - is sincerely shocking. We can only hazard that the level of failure they have repeatedly displayed must actually be a a kind of calculated malice; every single interaction we have had with them has resulted in buffoonery and mismanagement that could be described as Machiavellian in scope, some kind of grand plan by a higher power to make the lives of those of us shuffling quietly along this mortal coil and hoping merely to find somewhere to live that little bit worse.
It is a horror factory, an effigy of a business - a place where perfectly decent and clever graduates are turned into shambling Cro-Magnons, foreheads knotted furiously, banging residency agreements and council regulations together with their hands in some vain attempt to make a tenancy contract happen, all the while ignoring the frantic bleeps of the magic, shining white box on the table in front of them and hooting superstitiously at the sky.
You would be better advised to live in a council-maintained skip, along with all the dangers and inconveniences that entails, rather than let a flat from Grant Management. It does not matter how nice the flat is; rent somewhere else.
Consider this fair warning, people of Edinburgh. |

| For anyone having roof repairs done |
[Jun. 28th, 2009|09:20 pm] |
Swifts are one of the most amazing birds and they rely on nest sites in roofs. As we are due to have roof repairs I contacted the council to see what they say about roof repairs taking consideration of the needs of swifts. This is what they said, which may be of interest to anyone who is having their roof repaired:
All roofing and building contractors should be aware that it is an offence under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 to intentionally or recklessly take, damage or destroy the eggs, young or nest of a swift whilst it is being built or in use. So if there are birds nesting in your building then the builders are required to wait until the breeding season has passed. If you are aware of building works being carried out where any bird is nesting then please get in touch with the Biodiversity Officer on: MalcolmDOTFraserATedinburghDOTgovDOTuk. One of the ways they are trying to help Swifts in Edinburgh is to encourage developers of appropriate new builds to incorporate artificial nest sites (Swift bricks) into their designs. The Scottish Ornithologist's Club who carry out a survey for Swifts in Edinburgh every few years (the last report is available here: http://www.the-soc.org.uk/docs/edinburgh-swift-survey.pdf ). Finally, you can read more about Swifts on this website: http://www.swift-conservation.org/ |

I hear rumour of a large power cut in West (ish?) Edinburgh... does anyone actually know if this is the case and where is and isn't out... was meant to be heading over there soon but not sure if stuff might be closed (also generally curious). Anyone know? In particular, does the Fountainpark area have power?

| Second hand clothes stores |
[Jun. 27th, 2009|12:26 pm] |
Hello again everyone! I was wondering if anyone knows of any good second hand clothes stores in Edinburgh? I went around town yesterday but I find most of the male clothes in the stores were either bland or aimed towards teenagers..I'm looking for something a bit more unique and interesting. I find that the small male sections charity shops consist of either bizzare looking stretched jumpers, generic tops that have been faded in the wash or T-shirts with logos of total nonsense, I'm looking for good quality items and I'm not bothered if they are just as expensive as high street clothes...thanking you. |

| | Galway Girl - Sharon Shannon and Steve Earle | ] | I'm not even sure if I've managed to find the right community for this, and if anyone else has any suggestions as to another community to head to, please correct me! Now, here's my story.
I'm an American with a horrible, horrible case of wanderlust. I've always wanted to travel, but namely, my heart has always been pulling me to Scotland. Ever since I was a child, I knew that Scotland was a place that I not only wanted to go, but felt that I needed to go. So I've taken the steps to plan a trip.
Here's my problem.
I know nothing of the country, and nor do I have any connections to anyone living there or who has been there. Yes, yes, the internet and search engines are both wonderful assets, however it would be such a blessing to have one (or two, or even three!) people who would not mind staying in contact over the next months (ideally, this would not be longer than a year) and help me plan for what to expect, where to go, etc. I'm an avid pen-pal, and even that would be lovely! Knowing someone who actually lives there and having decent contact would be such a help. I have so many questions!
So please, comment back here if you're interested in helping me make this crazy dream come true. =] My name is Amy, and I hope to hear from someone soon!
