Playlist Additions for 10/12/08

New music added in the last few weeks:

DOES IT OFFEND YOU, YEAH? "Dawn of the Dead"
THE DECEMBERISTS "Valerie Plame"
THE ENEMY UK "40 Days & 40 Nights"
THE KOOKS "Do You Wanna?"
THE TING TINGS "Be The One"
BE YOUR OWN PET "The Kelly Affair"
BEN FOLDS "The Frown Song"
CRYSTAL STILTS "Shattered Shine"
CSS "Left Behind"
KINGS OF LEON "Sex On Fire"
MERCURY REV "Runaway Raindrop"
NATALIE PORTMAN'S SHAVED HEAD "Beard Lust"
OF MONTREAL "Id Engager"
RISE AGAINST "Re-Education (Through Labor)"
THE FRATELLIS "A Heady Tale"
THROW ME THE STATUE "Your Girlfriend's Car"
VAMPIRE WEEKEND "Ottoman"
THE WHIGS "Like A Vibration"

Please support these artists; check out Last.FM and Elbo.ws for more great indie music.

And we have a new winner in the BEST / MOST OBTUSE BAND NAME contest: NATALIE PORTMAN'S SHAVED HEAD. Must be a name generator for that sort of thing. Their music is suitably quirky and trippy. Also, any band that records a tune entitled "Valerie Plame" is all-righty in our book; when it's THE DECEMBERISTS, it's especially cool. Anyhoo, check out some new tunes:

Download ---> NATALIE PORTMAN'S SHAVED HEAD "Beard Lust"

Download ---> THE DECEMBERISTS "Valerie Plame"

Download ---> BEN FOLDS "The Frown Song"

And the latest video from THE FAINT, "The Geeks Were Right":
<lj-embed id="16" />
Enjoy!

Playlist Additions for 9/17/07

Quite an interesting weekend, last. The remnants of Hurricane Ike blew through here, with wind gusts of up to 70 mph. Pretty freaky.

We lost power on Sunday night for about eight hours, so everything was down. Luckily, the current was restored rather quickly. As of this writing, there are still hundreds of thousands of folks in Ohio that are STILL without power. Compared to the hell that folks in Texas are dealing with, we were extremely lucky.

Anyhoo, some new playlist adds:

BLOC PARTY "Talons"
CAESARS "Boo Boo Goo Goo"
OKKERVIL RIVER "Lost Coastlines"
SNOW PATROL "Take Back The City"
BEN FOLDS & REGINA SPEKTOR "You Don't Know Me"
FUJIYA & MIYAGI "Knickerbocker"
THE LITTLE ONES "Morning Tide"
PORTASTIC "Some Small History"
SANTOGOLD "Lights Out"
THE CURE "The Only One (Mix 13)"
KEANE "Spiralling"

Please support these artists; check out Last.FM and Elbo.ws for more great indie music.

Check out some new tunes:

Download ---> OKKERVIL RIVER "Lost Coastlines"

Download ---> DAVID BYRNE & BRIAN ENO "Strange Overtones"

Download ---> THE DANDY WARHOLS "The World The People Together (Come On)"

And the latest from BLOC PARTY, "Talons":
<lj-embed id="15" />
Enjoy!

New mast is 3 feet taller than the previous one, so it's all good. Working on securing a new transmitter, but per usual, it's the $$$ that are in the way. We'll work something out.

Enjoy the tunage!

Last.fm Album Quilt & Some New mp3 Downloads

Okay, I'm obviously impressed by dazzling pretties, so it's no surprise that I find this amazingly cool. Behold! Edgeradio's "Album Quilt":

<lj-embed id="21" />

The top albums at the station, based on frequency of plays.

Nifty, eh? How about some downloads? Haven't done that in awhile...

BLOC PARTY's new single "Mercury" is out, and it's, well, so-so. It's been playing in heavy rotation for over ten days, and it just hasn't gelled. Whatever that means. Anyhoo, the expected remixes have surfaced, and this one rocks:

Download ---> BLOC PARTY "Mercury (Telemitry Remix)"

THE FAINT has a new album due out, entitled "Fasciinatiion". Not sure what's up with the double "i" thingo, but the first single is cool. Hell, they had me with the title alone:

Download ---> THE FAINT "The Geeks Were Right"

There's a remix, natch, which is fine, but I prefer the album mix. Here's the favoured remix, from another
EdgeRadio fave, DOES IT OFFEND YOU, YEAH?:

Download ---> THE FAINT "The Geeks Were Right (DIOYY Remix)"

Not sure how long these links will be active, so grab while you can and enjoy!

When it finally croaks, we'll give it a proper burial, as she's performed beautifully over the past four years, and far longer than she was designed for. Kudos to Ramsey for designing one hell of a little transmitter. We've a backup, but it's not nearly as nice. Time to start shopping for a replacement, I reckon.

Also, our antenna mast is in need of repair. Major masonry work is needed to shore things up, so hopefully the entire array won't topple over before the cooler weather arrives. None of this should affect the audio streams, though.

No rest for the wicked, as my Gran used to say...

Enjoy!

I was lucky enough to reach a tech at the call center that ACTUALLY listened to what I was saying. So, we're chugging right along, and connectivity should be stable once more.

We're experimenting with LAST.fm , a site that compiles charts based on what mp3s folks ACTUALLY listen to on their computers. We've got our playlist churning away on our second back-up machine just to see what comes up. Click on the logo to check it out:

Enjoy!

Network Instability

For the last twenty-four hours, we've been experiencing sporadic power outages, which wreaks havoc with out Most Advanced Broadcast Equipment™. (Read: our trusty trio of emachines desktops)

Some of the issues stem from the ice storm that hit our area over two weeks ago. Couple that with a very aged and outdated regional electrical infrastructure, and blammo: a big mess. Battery back-ups aside, our systems simply cannot cope with problems of this magnitude.

So if one or both or our streams are unavailable, the lack of power is the most likely cause.

We've got everything sorted out, so barring any further issues, it's back to business as usual.

It might be time to invest in a generator and look into solar panels...

Playlist Additions for 03/10/08

Just a few new tunes:

NORTHERN STATE "Cold War"
TOKYO POLICE CLUB "In A Cave"
BAT FOR LASHES "What's A Girl To Do?"
FEIST "I Feel It All (Spoon Mix)"
HELIO SEQUENCE "Keep Your Eyes Ahead"
HOLLOWAYS "So This Is Great Britain"
RADIOHEAD "Jigsaw Falling Into Place"
THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS "The Mesopatamians"
THROW ME THE STATUE "About To Walk"

As always, you can log onto the site to tune into the audio stream by clicking on the icons in the sidebar or checking out our website: http://www.edgeradio1067.com

Speaking of audio streams, we've made some changes. We now stream at a much lower bit-rate of 32 kpbs, which uses a LOT less bandwidth. This means the stream should be much more stable, and listenable on slower connections and even wireless connections. We've also switched to AAC+ encoding, which delivers CD quality, stereo sound...even at 32 kbps.

We've also added a second stream of music only, again at 32 k. So it's all good, right?

There is a downside to streaming in AAC+, so if you're unable to connect to the new streams, please check out our Stream Help page:

http://www.edgeradio1067.com/streams.html

Enjoy!

Website Facelift & Sundry Sundries

Cheers to 2008, and let's all look forward to some great new music to come...

We had a hell of a storm in these parts last night, which cut power for over three hours and subsequently knocked EdgeRadio off-air and off-line. We returned to life at approximately 6:45 AM EST this morning. Our broadcast antenna suffered some damage, but temporary repairs are complete and we're back to normal, whatever that is.

The much-needed and long-overdue update to the main website is complete. A bit snappier than the old version, and well, very red. Check it out and let us know what you think:

EdgeRadio Website

The TOP TRACKS of 2007 list is compiled, and as soon as it's coded, the link'll be posted.

Keep rockin'!

Playlist Additions for 11/20/07

A handful of new stuff added in the past weeks:

BLOC PARTY "Flux"
CHARLATANS UK "You Cross My Path"
FUTUREHEADS "Broke Up The Time"
STARS "Take Me To The Riot"
C S S "Knife"
DIGITALISM "Pogo"
DROPKICK MURPHYS "God Willing"
NADA SURF "These Bones"
NORTHERN STATE "Better Already"
RADIOHEAD "15"
WILD SWEET ORANGE "Wrestle With God"
YEASAYER "2080"

As always, you can log onto the site to tune into the audio stream: http://www.edgeradio1067.com

The CHARLATANS & FUTUREHEADS tracks really rock, and of course, we're totally into BLOC PARTY. Had a hell of a time finding a decent rip of the track, though. Here 'tis:

DOWNLOAD ---> BLOC PARTY "Flux"

It's a video rip, and far superior to the BBC1 rip flooding the net. Speaking of the the video:

<lj-embed id="2" />

Major flashbacks to Ultraman and Johnny Sokko, eh? Cool.

Enjoy!

Halloween Treat from EdgeRadio

It's time again for an EdgeRadio tradition! Every Halloween, we give you the complete, un-cut 1938 broadcast of Orson Welles' WAR OF THE WORLDS.

Welles and his Mercury Theatre of the Air gave such convincing performances that many radio listeners actually believed that Martians had invaded the planet. In the aftermath of the reported panic, a public outcry arose, and CBS informed officials that listeners were reminded throughout the broadcast that it was only a performance. Welles and the Mercury Theatre escaped punishment, but not censure, and CBS had to promise never again to use the "we interrupt this program" device for dramatic purposes.

THE WAR OF THE WORLDS plays on EdgeRadio tonight, October 31, at 7 PM with and encore at 11 PM Eastern.

Log onto the site, http://www.edgeradio1067.com for links to our audio stream.

Turn down the lights, turn up the, um, radio, and enjoy!

Featured Tracks: The Wombats & Sister Vanilla
Two new tracks: "Let's Dance to Joy Division", taken from A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation by THE WOMBATS, & "Jamcolas" taken from Little Pop Rock by SISTER VANILLA...

THE WOMBATS: A three-man band from Liverpool formed in 2005 and comprised of Matthew Murphy, Dan Haggis and Tord Øverland-Knudsen. The band released three independent albums, with "Backfire at the Disco" being their first single to hit the UK charts. They then released Kill the Director in June of '07, and are currently on tour with THE HOLLOWAYS. "Let's Dance to Joy Division" is the first single from their US debut album, A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation. Official site: http://www.thewombats.co.uk/

Download --> THE WOMBATS "Let's Dance to Joy Division"

SISTER VANILLA: The band features Jim and William Reid (as well as Ben Lurie) from THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN with Jim and William’s sister Linda handling most of the vocals. SISTER VANILLA is the brothers' nickname for Linda. Little Pop Rock features the single "Can't Stop the Rock," but "Jamcolas" is especially cool, as it really captures the JAMC vibe. JAMC are rumoured to be recording a comeback album for release sometime in 2008. Can't stop the rock, indeed. Official site: http://www.sistervanilla.com

Download --> SISTER VANILLA "Jamcolas"

Enjoy!

Featured Tracks: Electric Soft Parade & They Might Be Giants
Some cool new music: "If That's the Case Then I Don't Know", a single from ELECTRIC SOFT PARADE, & "I'm Impressed" taken from The Else by THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS...

ELECTRIC SOFT PARADE: An English indie rock band from Brighton. Formed in 2001 and comprising siblings Alex and Tom White, who are the core of the band, with a varying roster of musicians joining them for each record. Their debut album, Holes In The Wall, was issued in February 2002. Their latest single on Truck Records, "If That's the Case Then I Don't Know" was released in April of 2007. The band is on a European Tour through August of 2007. Official site: http://www.electricsoftparade.com/

Download --> ELECTRIC SOFT PARADE "If That's the Case Then I Don't Know"

THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS: They Might Be Giants consists of John Linnell and John Flansburgh (often nicknamed "the two Johns" or "John and John") and formed in 1982. They almost immediately attracted a local following with their atypical instrumentation and songs which featured unusual subject matter and clever wordplay. At one point in their early career, they recorded their songs onto their answering machine, advertising the service as "Dial-a-Song". They scored their first hit in 1986 with Lincoln's "Ana Ang", which received heavy play on college radio and later on MTV. TMBG earned a 2002 Grammy for "Boss of Me" from Malcolm in the Middle. The band released The Else on July 10th, 2007. Official site: http://theymightbegiants.com

Download --> THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS "I'm Impressed"

Enjoy!
