We face a unique set of challenges |

| Name: | Eating-disordered dancers | |
| Theme: | Dancers with eating disorders | |
| About: | For the time being, membership is open. In the near future it will be moderated so I can check out new members and make sure they are really involved with dance. There are many communities for the general eating disordered, but none for the dancing eating disordered that I could find. If you feel an activity places a HIGH emphasis on thinness in addition to being very high-energy, contact me in my LJ and let me know what and I'll consider adding to the list. I want to avoid a watered-down community. Dancers, especially ballet dancers, face a challenge unique to most other high-energy activities. We must not only be strong and have an excess of energy, but are also under a ton of pressure to be thin, far thinner than typical, sometimes even thinner than is really safe. Some dancers do not have an actual eating disorder, but will practice the behaviors in an attempt to maintain thinness or to lose weight. We don't want to die. We don't want to kill ourselves. But we are under pressure to maintain two things with do not usually go hand-in-hand. A soccer player has the luxury of bulking up with muscle and some fat as long as there's speed, agility, and energy. We don't get that. We don't get to build up fat stores to draw from later. It's a balancing act many of us are desperate to keep in balance. The rules are relatively few. To join this community you MUST: ~be a dance student, professional dancer, or ex-dancer, or figure skater (ice dancing). Gymnasts are welcome. ~have an eating disorder or tendencies ~be 17 or over You don't already have to be thin. You don't have to have danced your whole life. Words like "ana" and "mia" ARE allowed. They are abbreviations of longer terms, and just because these abbreviated words sound like human names isn't reason enough to stifle speech. Unlike several other communities that allow members of all ages, and so ban advice and asking for it, you ARE allowed to ask for advice or offer it to someone who want it. This means you need to be aware, BEFORE joining, that members may ask for help with purging techniques, how to make it easier to fast, and so on. This is a community, not a dictatorship controlled by a mod. If you want to lose weight in a "healthy" way, this might not be the place for you, but you're welcome to try it. Members may ask for advice regarding food, what to eat to maintain energy for a long day of classes or a single class. This may be triggering. While I won't make this a hard-and-fast rule, please respect other members by using a cut. I absolutely won't allow insulting, intentionally causing drama, or trolls. If I believe you're a troll or just want to cause trouble, you're gone. ED communities have enough trolls in them who find it fun to taunt people with EDs, and I absolutely will NOT allow that. | |
