| | school food punishment - sky step | ] | Okay, so there hasn't been any public updates in a while, but since I couldn't do what I wanted to, I'll go ahead and explain the current situation.
Translation is progressing, to use a word. Not fast. The game has like 35,000 strings and I can only do a couple hundred a week without getting overwhelmed by school and work. The prologue will be finished soon, making overall progress reach approx. 20%, and we do want to try and get out a teaser patch, but that will probably have to be delayed. Communication within the group has fallen to almost nothing for reasons beyond my knowledge, and nothing has been QC'd yet for some reason.
I wanted to put out another preview video earlier this week, but my computer is not fast enough to capture video, so I had to petition someone else to do it, but I've still not recieved it to upload to YouTube... Also, there are bugs that cause crashes with the english scripts, which still need to be looked at...
Among other things.
If there is a god, then the video will be up within the next 24 hours. Its nothing special, just the first scene where Scherazard explains various in-game world elements. There are a few screenshots on my journal page.
Besides that, there probably wont be any progress for the next week since I'm taking double shifts and I think everyone else is pretty close to a nervous breakdown, too. Stay tuned, I guess... |

akake_kenshi's recent entry in this community was an extremely good idea. Since I'm quite new here, you all basically just have me on my word that I can translate Japanese, and have no real idea what kind of a translator I am, how good I am, etc. (unless you've been watching the PopoloCrois anime, anyway, but what are the chances of THAT?). ;) So in much the way he provided you with a translation example for your perusal, I figure it's only fair that I do the same.
Below, I've included a transcription of the full intro dialogue from Xanadu Next, as well as my rough translation of it. Please note that this translation represents only a single pass and a single proofreading, and has yet to be thoroughly edited in any way. In addition, I do not typically do direct translations, especially in a game like Xanadu Next where there's a lot of obviously stylized, flowery writing to work with -- even on a first pass, I try to actually take the time to produce some degree of natural English speech that would fit the situation, and this is exactly the approach I used below. It takes me a little longer than the average translator this way, but I think the end result is worth it. (:
Anyway, if anyone has any comments or suggestions, please do not hesitate to reply to this entry, or shout my name in the IRC channel to get my attention. I realize this is pretty rough, and there's definitely a lot of room for improvement, but hey, it's a start.
I'd have a lot more done by now, too, but I don't want to go any further until I'm certain what format to use for my translations. No sense spending hours translating text, only to find out that I'll have to totally reformat every line of it in order for it to be successfully patched back into the game, y'know?
Anyway, sorry, getting overly verbose now. (:

Just a quick note to anyone still out there.
We haven't forgotten about the translation, so relax. It's just been put on hold for a short while, as floofy explained in her last post, because of stresses put on us from work and school. (Read my latest journal entry if you want more details, but I won't bore you here.)
Floofy and I want to see the game in English, but the fact is, we aren't professional translators who know Japanese like the back of our hand (SHOCK!), we have lots of pressures in everyday life, and after coming home from a long day of class and work its difficult to work up the energy to spend my remaining free time deciphering the relatively complex dialogue in the game and rephrasing it so native English speakers can gather the full meaning. It's tiring, but I'm extremely proud of the work I've done so far. We've already put a buttload of hours into this project, and we don't want to see it die, either.
That said, its another challenge to coordinate the several translators we have working on the project, none of us with expert-level Japanese knowledge, in order to produce concise translations. Expect minor inconsistancies whenever we get a beta out.
Anyway, due to certain circumstances, we're trying to get ourselves back on track. We just got ourselves a new translator and I will be resuming work once finals are over, about a week before Christmas. I'll try and put as much work into it as possible over the winter break.
Just for reference, the text from the Prologue is roughly 25% done, most of the books are finished, menus are done as far as I know, and random other strings have been translated. We'll be keep on keepin' on in the following weeks. Apologies for the quiet-ness. |

Making yet another note to let people know that yes, we are all still alive. We've been very quiet because all of us go to school, or have really busy jobs, and whatnot.
We will keep people posted as we start winding down near Christmas. I've been poking at the translations and reworking the website, but lately my job has had me exhausted (I'm a web design intern).
We'll keep everyone posted as we get through this- especially as finals is coming up for the students in our group. |

Well, well, well. Here we are. All of us on the net that we could scrounge together have finally begun to work together to try and get Falcom's masterpiece into english. The project is already fairly well underway, and all of us are die-hard Falcom fans who don't want to give up until its complete. Our staff consists of the following so far:
floofy, or togapitoion, Japanese genious who started the project long ago and has never given up. We have her to thank for much of this project.
ViperDan, who is to thank especially for volunteering his programming expertise and support all around.
Rogue, our extremely talented image editor, so you don't need to stare at black boxes and poorly optimized jpeg engrish in-game ;),
Rasqual, the greatest frenchie around, who's managed to hack the game's script and graphics routines all by himself. Buy him a round, someone!
Nimue1016, or Nemo, who is one of the reasons we're all congregated together and synergizing our efforts, and is helping through translation.
And myself, also known as alerith or beni, Japanese translator who has seen enough wasted talent and wants to get this game in english for once and for all!
