[Thread] Gods Help the Queen
Characters: OU!Leonidas Agion, AU!Ahiru, AU!Fakir
Where: Yil-Deka
When: Night
Summary: Leonidas has gone into hiding. To him, it is to protect his wife, who has just arrived in Econtra. In reality, however, it is something else entirely that controls his actions.
Warnings: Possible violence and angst.

She was asleep, her body raising slowly, up and down underneath the many blankets. She had been cold, and had requested the sheets lest she catch cold; Leonidas was only too happy to oblige. After all, this was his wife, his queen, and he had lived as much for her as he did for Sparta.

Of course, she couldn't be that cold after what they just did. Though Gorgo usually enjoyed the nude rutting they engaged in, Leonidas decided to be careful and simply keep it to holding her, as Gorgo had just arrived and seemed somewhat exhausted. Indeed, she seemed wary of the compound in general, and so the Spartan king had taken her advice and brought her to the most desolate room in the compound, in one of the empty unused buildings. Here they could be without interruption.

For you. Leonidas lifted a hand and caressed the woman's cheek. Fate took me a way once. I shall not let them take you away again.

He'd made his mind up on that. Gorgo was strong and smart, yes, but there were creatures that inhabited Econtra that were inherently wicked and unashamedly cruel to their victims. He did not want anything to happen to her or himself; that his wife was not cuffed made the danger seem all the more impending, and the distant sound of the dor to Yil building opening brought the king to his feet, his hand immediately on the hilt of his sword.

Fakir ran through the compound, his heart racing. A heartshard...if it was true, then that meant that Rue had a chance to be whole, even in the middle of this war they had been forced into. That elegant, lonely-eyed dancer who sacrificed so much for people...he could perhaps finally accomplish his goal, his fate, his entire reason for being.

But first, he'd have to find the man now under control of the fragment of emotion. He glanced back to make sure the redheaded knight was following behind him before turning a corner and running towards the Yil building.

When he did, Fakir had to slap his hand over his mouth to stop a quack from escaping--the blood-red jewel around his neck glowed with an other-worldly light. The heartshard! It was nearby...

When Ahiru had first realized what had happened to the man she'd spoken to over the journals, she hadn't really known what to think. However, her instincts had told her, when she'd heard about a girl who looked like Rue who didn't have a cuff, it had to be a heart shard. Of course heart shards being here meant that Rue could be closer to being whole, but heart shards also caused all sorts of trouble. There was no telling what could happen to the man who was being possessed by this one. There was also no telling what would happen when they found him. This was someone they didn't know after all, and a lot of people in Econtra were fighters, so it was bound to be more dangerous than any of the other people who had been possessed in the past. At least Ahiru had her sword with her.

She came dangerously close to running into Fakir from behind when he stopped suddenly near Yil and had to pause to right herself. "What is it? Have you found it?"

"Not quite...but we must be close," Fakir responded, holding out the pendant in his cupped hand and showing the girl how the jewel shone. He looked around, examining what was in the nearby area, before pointing at the dorm. "In here might be a good place to start..."

Ahiru nodded. "Right!" It was definitely a good thing that the pendant glowed when heart shards were near. Ahiru walked over to the door of the Yil Barracks and opened it peaking inside. When she saw that the hall was clear, she opened the door all the way and entered. Now all they needed to do was find exactly which dorm in the building they were in.

Fakir followed the Knight, taking great care to have his steps make as little noise as possible. Don't waddle, he told himself, lift your foot up and gently put it back down...then the other one...I need to stay as quiet as possible so we can find him...

Fakir struggled to keep himself as quiet as possible, even his breathing. He knew little about Leonidas, but from what he could tell, he was a powerful warrior. Hopefully, they would be safe.

Ahiru also did her best to be quiet as they moved down the hallway. It never hurt to be too careful after all. They knew nothing about Leonidas except that he was a warrior, and a good one. Ahiru's grip on the hilt of her sword tightened. She hoped she wouldn't have to use it, though she probably would.

Eventually she reached the door of Yil-Deka. That looked like a good place to start. Carefully, she approached the door. She paused briefly and glanced back at Fakir to see if he was still following her.

Leonidas waited on the other side of the door, as quiet as death. He had heard the footsteps, had heard the breathing of those behind the door. This feel on his heightened sense of his surroundings seemed more acute now that his wife was at his side.

Very quietly the warrior held his spear back, his position a slight crouch. He was all but ready to thrust at the first sign of intrustion.

Fakir looked back at Ahiru and nodded. That part of the dorm seemed as good of a place as any.

He felt bad having Ahiru in the front. Technically, the guy was supposed to go first in a dangerous situation, right? ...Then again, without being transformed into Lohengrin, he was unarmed, and she had a sword...

If the heartshard was nearby, then...then he'd probably have to transform into Lohengrin anyway. If they got into a dangerous situation, it'd be best to have Lohengrin's powers available to him. He made sure to catch Ahiru's eye and tapped his pendant so she knew what he was doing, then took a few steps back into a darker, quiet part of the hallway. For a brief moment, light enveloped the duck-turned-boy, and if anyone was looking closely they might see a flash of what looked like a golden egg. When the light faded, where Fakir had once stood was Prince Lohengrin, dressed in a regal outfit of blue, white and gold.

Ahiru watched the transformation curiously, then smiled at Lohengrin when he appeared, nodding. Now they were ready for anything. Almost anything anyway.

She gestured Lohengirn closer and then, still gripping her sword and bracing herself for whatever happened next, opened the door to the room.

*FOOOMP*

The spearhead came fast and hard from inside the shadows of the dorm room. Had it hit Ahiru, it may very well have caused massive damage. However, he knew where and how to strike so as not to hit the young lady, and as such the point stopped mere inches from Ahiru's chest.

Leonidas did not show himself; he stuck to the shadows. However, he spoke with a low warning voice.

"Leave." His orders were direct and blunt. "Now."

"Qu--! Ahiru!!" The Prince reached out a hand in an attempt to pull the girl out of the way of the spear, but thankfully the weapon stopped before any damage was done. Lohengrin was relieved, but the man's commanding voice from the room beyond reminded him that he must still be on his guard. He answered in a calm, noble voice--a stark contrast to the boy's typical demeanor.

"Good sir, we wish you no harm. Please, allow us entrance."

The Prince didn't really need to worry because Ahiru had jumped back when the spear was thrust at her. She almost tripped over her own feet, but managed not to fal and started to raise her sword defensively.

She lowered it though, when Lohengrin spoke. She didn't want to look like an immediate threat. It wouldn't help the situation much.

"I'm afraid that is not possible." Leonidas did not budge. "I have made a vow to protect my wife now that she is here, now that we are once again together. The forces of hell itself will not compell me to break that vow."

Behind him he thought he felt Gorgo stir, though she did not seem to move. He was glad she recognized and understood the situation. Little did he know that she was, in fact, not there.

Lohengrin slowly stepped in front of Ahiru, spreading out his empty hands to show he was unarmed. "My fate is not that of a warrior," he reasoned. "I, too, am acting in the interest of one I love. I will not compel you to break your vow."

Ahiru decided that this was her cue to step back and let Lohengrin do his work. She remained on her guard just in case though. Prince Lohengrin was no warrior, and she would do what she could to help him by protecting him to the best of her ability, for both his sake and Rue's.

For now though, she stayed back. Hopefully he could handle things from here, but she would still watch his back.

Lohengrin hesitated, then took a step through the door, still holding out his empty hands and trying to look as unthreatening as possible. "I do have a reason for being here. The very reason for my existence. You have...something which does not belong to you. Something that without which the Princess cannot be whole."

"Not a step closer."

Leonidas' sword was immediately brought out of it's sheath, and aimed at Fakir's heart. His glare bore into Fakir's eyes, a glare filled with complete distrust.

"Do not think I will not act on my threats, boy!" From the bed, it was possible that Lohrengin could see Gorgo, or the spectre that looked so much like her, fade in and out due to the duck's presence. "I have asked that you leave and you do not comply even after I state my reason. I will give you one minute before my blade ends up in your heart."

His words were hissed, which only served to bely his anger a these people. After all that he did to protect his wife, how dare they intrude!

Ahiru looked past Lohengrin and also saw into the room. This was the point when she remembered her conversation with Leonidas over the journals.

"Prince Lohengrin! Rue-chan resembles his wife! I think he's mistaken the heart shard for her!"

The Prince's eyes widened, suddenly understanding in full the situation. "Leonidas! That woman...she is not your wife. She is the emotions of another...Please," he continued, miming his invitation as he spoke, "dance with me, and allow your eyes to become unclouded."

Leonidas' eyes narrowed at this invitation. Not his wife? But that could not be. She had spoken of things that they could not know of and talked of people and things from home. He had held her and felt her warmth. That they would wish to take her away, and with such cruel excuses...

Leonidas spoke no words in response. He didn't need to. He had given enough warning as it was.

He thrust his sword forward.

Lohengrin cried out, dodging out of the way of the man's attack, his blade just barely missing his arm and cutting the sleeve of his tunic. He had been worried the man might attack him...he hated fighting with every fiber of his being. He didn't want to resort to using his sword...

"Please! I don't wish to fight you!" he said firmly, looking the man in the eye. "What have you seen to make you so ready to turn to violence?"

"I have already told you," Leonidas stared down the prince with steely eyes. "I wish to be alone with my wife, who had believed me dead in Sparta. And I will protect her from those who would violate the sactity of our reunion!"

He swung again.

This time the sword met another sword mid swing as Ahiru moved in front of Lohengrin to block the blow. Ahiru had had enough of this. They were getting nowhere like this.

"That's not your wife you idiot!" She snapped angrily. "Did you ever think to wonder why she doesn't have a cuff?"

(Reply to this) (Parent)(Thread)

[info]dininginhell
2007-11-11 06:02 am UTC (link)
Leonidas didn't bother answering. So she did not have a cuff. It was just as easily an oversight, or perhaps the Warden did not see fit to put a cuff on her. Either way, he had to protect her.

"LEAVE us!" He roared as he swung again.

Ahiru blocked this one too, with obvious effort. He was physically stronger than she was after all.

"Everyone wears a cuff in this place. No exceptions!" Ahiru was raising her voice a bit now. "Why wouldn't they treat your wife any differently? Not only that, why do think you're acting like this? Why come all the way out here just to protect her? You seem like the sort of person who wouldn't need to hide in the most deserted part of the compound just to protect one person! Don't you think you're acting a bit odd?"

Fighting...they were fighting...he wasn't sure why, but every time Ahiru picked up her sword and charged into battle he felt so incredibly worried. He wished nothing more than for her to not have to fight...but who felt that way? Lohengrin, or...?

Nevermind that! Now wasn't the time! Lohengrin stood up straight, his voice firm as well as his stance, his hands expressing the words that he was saying. "Leonidas, I implore you, you must realize that you are not acting under your own impulses. This isn't how you truly feel! Allow me to take away the burden of this emotion--this emotion that isn't truly yours!"

"Do not presume to tell me what I do and do not feel and see, boy!" Leonidas glared at him. "I have shared a bed with the queen longer than either of you have been born. Do you not think I know who she is, how she-!?"

With that, he turned to make sure that Gorgo was all right, but nearly shouted out in alarm. She was not there. His expression turned from anger to pure shock almost immediately.

"Gorgo....!" He turned back towards them, the shock evident even as he glared at them in anger. "What cruel magic is this....!?"

"Forbidden magic," the Prince replied softly, his hand reaching up to touch the intricate pendant at his neck. "The Princess shattered her heart in order to seal away the Raven and protect the people. Much as you now seek to protect the one you love."

He looked up at the warrior, his eyes and voice speaking of his sincerity. "I know that you must wish you were not separated from her. In a way, I too am separated from the one I love. But..."

The Prince began to dance, strong and graceful, each step, each motion of his hands telling a story. "As much as I wish to break free from the limits I've been given, I must work within them. I must help her the only way I can.

"I don't know why fate has decided that we be taken to this place. But whatever the reason, our fate is now tied to the fate of this world. Perhaps all we can do for now is fight...fight for the ones we care about. Those here, and those that we have been separated from. I will not behave recklessly, but I will not allow my worry, my caution to overwhelm me so much that I can not complete the task I have been given."

He slowed, his hand reaching out to Leonidas. "You are a great warrior, greater than I could ever be. I know that you, as well, will be able to face whatever will come with an unwavering heart."

It took some time for what the Prince's words to sink in. It was mainly due to Leonidas' own incredulity at the idea that his wife would be....fake. She simply couldn't be. She was the queen, the mother of his son, and the woman he had considered nothing short of his equal. She was a piece of him, even if, as a Spartan, emotion was considered a superficial consideration. He loved her with the intensity of a thousand storms and would die a thousand times over for her if he needed to.

Slowly, though, the words of Lohrengin began to elicit a subtle change in the king. The anger in his eyes turned slowly into contemplation mixed with sadness as the magic cleared his mind. His sword lowered as the dance continued with its near march-like steps, until it clattered to the ground.

"An unwavering heart." he murmured quietly at those words, wondering if his own heart was as strong as he'd thought. Even after the years of war and higogi, he had that one soft spot for Gorgo. He desired to protect her. But she was a strong woman, and what would she have said if she saw him protecting an illusion? Would she have said to protect it, to shield it from the world? What would he do with her if she truly came? Would he, in fact....

"...Why do you hold your hand out to me?"

It was another moment before Leonidas responded. To take it from him...take what? What exactly was in him? Was it....

His hand slowly went to Lohrengin, until, finally, it closed around his with a firm grip. The king was uncertain what was going to happen; he had to wonder how the boy would tak whatever was wrong with him away.

Prince Lohengrin's smile grew more pronounced. "Thank you."

The pendant around his neck glowed, and the ghostly image of Rue reappeared, dressed in the clothing she had worn as the Princess of the story. She looked at him with a frown, her hand slightly pulled away, watching him with open suspicion.
"I won't harm you," he told her. "Come here."
She shook her head, eying him defiantly.
"Please...I'll send you back to where you belong." He held out his free hand to her. After a moment that seemed like a lifetime to the Prince, she took it freely.
"I am the feeling of Caution," she told him before she disappeared.

Fakir looked down into his hand, the red jewel cupped in it glowing softly. He threw the jewel into the air. "Return to the heart of whom you belong to," he told the shard, and it vanished in a sparkle of red light.

Once the heart shard had returned to it's rightful owner, Ahiru sighed in relief and relaxed, putting her sword back in the sheath at her side.

"Alright, We did it!" She said happily. It really was "we" this time too. She'd actually been able to help for once.

Leonidas stared as the woman reappeared - only she was not dressed as she had been before. It was stragte to see what was happening, and to feel the sudden pulling on his body. It wasn't really being pulled, but rather the sensation of the jewel being taken from his body.

Caution.

When the strange ritual was complete, Leonidas let go of the Prince's hand, and turned away. It had felt so real, he had been sure - beyond sure - it was his queen. He had wanted the children to be wrong.

And.....even though it wasn't, he could feel his own heart break into a thousand pieces.

"....Thank you." He finally spoke, his voice steady and low. "I....am unsure how to repay you for your kindness."

"Yes, thank you." Ahiru agreed as she walked up to stand next to Lohengrin.

"Yes." He answered as he looked down at the floor. "I will be all right. I am...stunned, I suppose. But I will be all right."

Stunned did not begin to descibe how he felt. There were those in the compound who had friends and family that had come with them - and thought he knew it selfish, and though he knew it was foolish to want, he had been given hope that maybe he had a chance to see someone he knew for once, as opposed to being by himself, the only true Spartan. Once more, though, his desires had been sacrificed for the good of others and the woman was, indeed, just an illusion.

Lamentations could come later, when he was alone.

Lohengrin wished he could do more to help. He could sense that the experience with the heartshard had been a shock to the man, but...for the time being, he had done all he could. He bowed once again towards then man. "Then...I'll take my leave. Thank you, sir."

There was nothing more they could do here and Ahiru needed to go back to her room to check on Rue anyway.
