Jennifer Brown from Under the Root makes the most sexy and understated lingerie.

What is your background in design?

I began assembling used/vintage textiles into theatrical costumes during the high school years. Clothing came next while using a secondhand, black lacquer Singer and the miscellaneous textiles from garage sales, thrift stores, estate and church sales, and reclaiming used/found materials. After high school, I studied Business, Design, and Dance. I read tons of practical applications and found the greatest source for continuing on, oodles and noodles of practice.  While studying Dance at Columbia College Chicago, I realized that costumes played an intricate role for the performances. The availability in movement and projection of each design was tantamount for dancers, performers and individuals alike. Today, each handmade structure reflects the use of cottons and the grace of the human body.

Who wrote "The Berlin Stories" which was a semiautobiographical account of the author's time in 1930s Berlin, describes pre-Nazi Germany and the people which were met. It is episodic, dealing as it does with a large cast over a period of several years from late 1930 to early 1933. The novel was adapted into a Broadway play by John Van Druten (1951), which was then adapted for a film under the name I Am A Camera (1955) with Laurence Harvey and Julie Harris, with screenplay by John Collier and music by Malcolm Arnold.

Hint: The book was then adapted into the musical Cabaret (1966) and film Cabaret (1972).

Trivia Challenge Question:
Name the Parisian, Italian designer from the 1920's. Although her first designs appeared in Vogue, the business really took off with a pattern that gave the impression of a scarf wrapped around the wearer's neck. Her relationship with the Dada and Surrealist movements continued in collaboration with Salvador Dalí.

Hint: In Paris, she was known as "Schiap" to her friends and began making her own clothes. With some encouragement from Paul Poiret, she started her own business but it closed in 1926 despite favourable reviews.

Hello!
I have been reconstructing, assembling, and designing undergarments/findlings for ladies and gents.
I started a blog about this not too long ago and holding monthly trivia challenges for Free Wears.

Hi everyone! Sorry I haven't been posting, finals have been taking all my waking hours!

First, I wanted to tell all of you about a really interesting experience I had last week. I participated in the 2008 "Bioblitz" project, which took place this year in the Santa Monica Mountains. Basically, a BioBlitz is a 24-hour inventory of all living organisms in a given area. That means the place is swarmed with members of the National Park Service, National Georgraphic, volunteers, and loads of experts on just about everything you could think of! It was fascinating, and I saw so many things I would otherwise not have the opportunity to see. Get out there in nature people!

Here is the official National Geographic BLOG, where you can read all about what happened throughout the day.
http://blogs.nationalgeographic.com/blogs/bioblitz/

and just to prove I was there...check out the pictures...
1. welcome sign
2. identifying a species of bee
3. using an small remote controlled camera
to view the fish at Malibu Lagoon
4. a frog came to say hello
5. what happens when you give college students free stuff

---------------------------------------------------------------
Secondly, I'm thinking about volunteering this summer at this place where you collect turtle eggs so that poachers don't get them first. Has anybody ever done anything like that? I'd love to hear whether or not you enjoyed it.

Have you guys heard this about the polar bears? Ridiculous!

--------------------------------------------------------------------
the Bush Administration finally listed the polar bear under the Endangered Species Act today. I'd love to tell you that that's great news, but there's a BIG catch. The Administration listed the polar bear as threatened instead of endangered, and invoked a clause (known as a "4(d) exemption") that excludes global warming from the list of threats the federal government has to consider when trying to protect polar bear habitat.

Global warming is the biggest threat facing polar bears today, and this little clause eliminates any protection the listing should have given to the polar bear.

Happy Sunday everybody :-)

Yesterday I went to the Earth Day event at the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica. I thought it was really cool that they made their event earlier in the month than most earth day celebrations so that it would not conflict with the attendance at the big Wilshire Center Earth Day event next week.

The event basically consisted of a lot of booths from different organizations, like Heal the Bay and Greenpeace. There was a lot of marine organizations, as well as transportation and animal rights groups. There was also a lot of organic and hemp clothing. There were a few solar panel booths, but there was nobody at them to talk to about their organizations. In general, I felt like a lot of the booths were poorly staffed; either there was nobody there, or the people were not friendly and informative. Friendly and well informed people makes a HUGE difference in whether people become interested in your cause, so that was a real disapointment to me. I was also very surprised by the lack of food-related booths. I saw Cliff Bar...and that was about it.

Spoke with the folks from http://www.seasheperd.org who help the whales and the seals. SO SAD! 320,000 seals were killed in the last 2 months by Candian fisherman. I will make a whole report on this later...but seriously, don't buy canadian seafood!

Just got home from M Cafe, a macrobiotic restaurant on Melrose in Hollywood.

http://mcafedechaya.com

Firstly let me just say that I'm stuffed. Don't over-order. Haha. That being said...its hard not to when you can choose from such an expansive and delicious menu! M Cafe is the perfect place to go with meat-eating family members or friends, because they offer a few fish dishes in addition to a lot of vegan and vegetarian options.

*

I had The Melrose Avenue Muffaletta ~ 8.95 : grilled seitan, spicy seitan “salami”, miso-cured tofu cheese, roasted red peppers, sun-dried tomatoes, carrots, arugula & olive spread, in our sourdough boule...served by the wedge. It was really good.

My friend got Carolina-Style Barbequed Seitan Sandwich ~ 11.00: thinly sliced grilled seitan basted with our own zesty barbeque sauce and piled high on a house-baked whole heat bun with grilled onions, pickles, and creamy coleslaw. I had a bite or two and it was quite tasty too.

However, if you don't try M Cafe for any other reason, I have two words for you:

KALE SALAD and DESSERT.

Okay so thats three words, but WHATEVER. The KALE SALAD in a peanut sauce is so good I almost cried. And the dessert is phenomenal, and ALL VEGAN. I got a chocolate tart and my friend got a fruit tart, both delicious, and HUGE.

M Cafe is more expensive than Flore, but its also a lot closer for a lot of people. The atmosphere is a little more...well, hollywood than Flore too, but that has its own charm.

I would definitely give it a try. And don't you DARE not get the Kale.

Book:
"The Open Space of Democracy" by Terry Tempest Williams

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

This book changed my life. Its a really fast and easy read. Terry uses the alaskan wilderness as the platform for her moving ideas about democracy, the true forms of activism, and bringing everyone's voices to the table. Williams expresses that apathy, fear, and alienation from nature and each other are major environmental issues, not just conservation. The message is, that there are many voices, many ways to contribute, and that no one is powerless. She urges us to examine alternative ways of being politically active and thinking about our role in society. She also argues that experiencing the environment first-hand is key to change. I find myself quoting her all the time! Just read it. I can't do it justice.

FLORE(vegan) in Silverlake California

Okay technically I think its in Echo Park, but same difference. I was SO impressed with Flore, I actually daydream about the food haha. The food is all organic and vegan. I thought it was going to cost a fortune but its actually really reasonably priced. Flore has a nice diversity of choices, including more veggie-based options and AMAZING fake meat options. The other fabulous thing about Flore is that its really laid back and non...shi shi?

Save Mr. Splashy Pants - Greenpeace.org

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

There was this huge contest over at Greenpeace.org to name this whale that they are saving, and it was also going to be the name of their entire whaling campaign. People got to vote from a list of 30 really politically correct, international names like "Paz" which means peace...yada yada, you get the idea. And overwhelmingly, the world voted for the 30th wildcard entry.... "Mr Splashy Pants". Now, I know some people were super pissed (like the folks over at Treehugger.com), but COME ON, that is HILARIOUS. I for one was super excited to see that hardcore environmentalists had a sense of humor. I've gotten yelled at by some friends for that, but I REALLY don't think that people aren't going to help save the whale because its name is Mr Splashy Pants. In fact, I think that people will be more involved because its not so freakin' DEPRESSING. I don't think it makes fun of the whale, or disrespects its plight at ALL. If nothing else, it makes it so lovable we just HAVE to save it. You're welcome to disagree with me, but thats how I feel. So, yeah, go buy some splashy gear, spread the splashy love ;-)
