Today's obento is a couple kinds of sushi, lots of veggies, and some very bright purple tsukemono that did not want to have their picture taken. :P

For those of you on my friends list and in the bentolunch community who are seeing these bento for a second time, I apologize.

Contents of preschooler bento lunch: Homemade Tuscan-style squid and green peas in tomato sauce, fried polenta slices, and quick tomato and cucumber salad (the cucumber is actually an unripe young horned melon). ( See what's inside ^_^ )
This bento is Heart themed, not for any special reason, just because I had food that could be shaped as a hearts easily.
Top: Pork mince with a spicey red pepper and tomato sauce and lots of veges like mushroom, courget, carrot and onion. And two little heart cheese slices. This was amazing! Am going to be making that again.
Bottom: Salad with red cabbage and carrot, heart shaped falafel and heart tomatos.

Contents of preschooler bento lunch: Mild Japanese curry made with chicken, carrots, onions and purple potatoes. Accompaniments are rakkyo pickled scallions and rice. Morning prep time: 6 minutes, using leftover curry and rice.

A friend of mine has been putting manjuu (steamed bun with various fillings) in her obento, and she always makes really cute faces for them so I decided to try that out. I cannot believe she does that every day...they're more difficult than I thought they'd be! They're cute, though! :D

This is my first post here, though I have posted before at the bentolunch community. I've been making my own bento for about 2 years now. I grew up with bento. I'm originally from Japan and my mom always packed me a bento when I was in kindergarten and during high school. For me, it's like a little taste of home when I make these lunches.
Here are two recent bento; click pic to go to my flickr page + to see flickr notes.

Today I attempted to make frog faces out of cucumber. It was difficult but they turned out ok, I think. I need more practice before they look pro, but still...who doesn't want to see a cucumber frog face when they open their lunch box?!

Last night we made sushi for dinner and there was way too much of it so today's lunch is sushi leftovers. This is the most Japanese obento I've made in at least a year. ^_^;

Full details with additional lunch and a discussion of how to tone down spicy food leftovers for kids here at Lunch in a Box.
