Sweet jesus, it's been so long. @_@ I'm hoping this will get me motivated to make more icons around this summer season, since obviously making them during the school year isn't working out for me. :D

Umm, a lot of these are randomly old by a few months. Some are stuff I made within the last month. And uhhhh oh yeah I had to stop taking those bajillion friends-list requests a while ago so please don't hurt me. ; ;

+28 Contemporary Artists Icons

You all remember my previous artist series post, no? It mainly focused on the impressionists and art nouveau artists, but this time I took a keen twist into the more modern and contemporary art scene for these.

My main purpose in making these is to spread across the influence of artists and their works into the LiveJournal public sphere!! So if you seen an artist you like, or would like to be a fan of, be sure to grab the icons and spread the artLove!

And for those who are curious about the artists....a quick overview on their approach to their work and my thoughts on them!!

Kiki Smith : I personally admire her for her daring use of the human body in her works. In her work "Born" (Icon #1) she sculpts out her image being born from the body of a deer. In other works, such as "Standing" (which is a public art installation over at my school, UCSD) represents a nude woman emerging from a dead eucalyptus tree with water pouring from her wrists.

Ruben Ortiz-Torres : He has been especially well known for his customization in all medias. One special piece, the customized Nissan (Icon #6) spoke out against the idea of "aliens" as a term catering to xenophobes while the car itself scissors its own body into multiple parts powered by spinning hydraulics. Very cool. And he was my art professor. :D

Jeff Koons : Jeff Koons likes to play with our ideas of "texture". In "Rabbit" (Icon #7) he plays with the idea of the typical carnival-won toy made of plastic (or some variation of it) but made completely out of steel! The kitsch imagery is something Koons is especially well known for.

Mike Bidlo : The one thing that caught my eye about this fellow was his approach to art. He replicates famous artworks from such artists as Warhol, Duchamp, and Pollock, and presents it as his own. They are literally exact duplicates, although he handmade them himself. It leaves the question of whether he should be creditted for the work, or should the original artist who first made that work?

Amy Adler : Another UCSD faculty member + artist on the side. She is known primarily for her dabblings in traditional art mixed with photography and the changes that photography has brought to the art world. In particular, her works such as "Ace" (Icon #11) was personally handdrawn herself. However, she took a photograph of it, and destroys the original works leaving only the memory of it in a photograph.

Frank Stella : My favourite minimalist! His use of colors and shapes never fail to amaze me. He focused more on the idea that the PICTURE is the object, rather than the picture being a representation of an object.

Richard Serra : Another minimalist, although he worked with large sheets of metal standing free-form as an installation. The most tricky thing to this is that it's literally free-form, where the sheets of metal are only supporting eachother. However, I love his use of lines and curves as well his choice in its large scale.

Philip Lorca Dicorcia : A photographer who is known for his photos of people on the streets of New York as they pass by and his series of photos of strippers, all taken in a way for us as a viewer to associate ourselves with these typically look-down upon women. He also recently worked on 1000 polaroids of misc. photos, although every photo is set up to be related to the others through design.

Man Ray : DaDa artist who dabbled with photography and altering them. To be continued.....

John Heartfield : Another DaDa artist who was vehemently against the rise of fascism in Germany. Many of his extremely well-crafted photomontages depicted his own mockery of Hitler and the policies that were rising in popularity in Germany.

Yuken Teruya : Asian artist who is well known for his use of everyday bags (such as McDonald's happy meal bags) and luxury bags (such as a shopping bag from Louie Vuitton) and personally cutting out a tree to be gently pulled down into its frail and delicate settings. That's right, in all of those icons, those are treets cut and place together (WITHOUT GLUE or any other adhesive) from wtihin everyday bags.

Barbara Kruger : An artist who has pioneered the way for typography. Her works have played a large part in feminism and her own view on mysogyny. Her works typically are made up of Black and White photos with white lettered captions against a red background. She had also recently finished an installation over at my school, UCSD.

Robert Rauschenberg : A genius in his own right, in my opinion!! He creates amazing collages that use everyday materials (such as cardboard) and mixes them all together with 3D elements. He was also one of the earliest artists to dabble in silkscreening. (And, if I'm correct, BEFORE Warhol came into the scene with it.)

A layout?!?!

Yes, a web layout. This one is extremely old however, it dates to literally a year ago. But still, I thought I'd distribute it for anyone who cares to use it.

Although it was never released on AppendixSquared, I would appreciate it if the imagemap was left alone to link back to the site as it does use resources from AppendixSquared.

Over 100 watchers? You guys are crazy. :D I know a lot of that has to do with microcake being the phenomenal lady that she is, what with always serving up the goods for us all. And though I wish they posted here more (Ha! Like I'm one to talk. xD) xinny_boy and paperastronauts bring it home with their individual styles too. Anyways, I'm sharing some goodies today. All of these were made with my own stock photos and Photoshop defaults. Uhhmm these are my first sets so they aren't all that great but I hope you find some use for them. Also, new icons and other things coming soon, I've just been in a perpetual slump lately, but I'm trying to get out of it. So, for the time being enjoy these preview icons.
