I'm looking to rent a private parking spot in Strathcona. That is, a spot off of the street. Anyone know of anything?

10:50 pm - Fundraiser for Belarus Pride

femaleinvert

This fundraiser is for TEMA Belarus Pride, a national LGBT organization struggling under a repressive government in Eastern Europe. Their GLBT community suffers struggles with human rights offences against them and they live with little freedom to express themselves. They aren't free to live, love and be. With Vancouver Pride's 30th anniversary approaching, we recognize not all of us have come so far. We were approached to assist their LGBT Pride and like many other successful Pride organizations, we chose to reach out our hand and raise funds for Belarus. Come enjoy an evening of great entertainment, featuring Kendra Doll, Buster Cherry and Scott Bolton and help us give back to those trying to move forward.

Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 8:00pm
The Odyssey Nightclub
1251 Howe Street
Vancouver, BC

Tickets are $10 and are available at Little Sister's Bookstore.

ALL Proceeds will be going to Belarus Pride. Every cent =)

Seriously, would we let the 3rd thursday of the month go by without getting all the homos together for a spin around the dance floor? We think not.

And what better reason to get out there and flirt but to help out a friend of the community when she needs us?

Gwen Haworth (aka DJ artflick) has given so much to all of us: as a DJ at BENT, as a relief worker on the DTES, as the filmmaker of the incredible documentary about her transition from MTF "She's a Boy I Knew", and as our friend. But now Gwen's in need of some fundraiser-love.....So it's time to get gussied up and get out there on the dance floor! ... all proceeds from this event will go to help Gwen conquer debts incurred from the production of her film and the cost of her transition.

SPENT (as in "Gwen SPENT all her money")
Thursday February 21st
ANZA club, 3 west 8th, corner Ontario
9pm to 2am
sliding scale $3 to $10
19+ only, bring I.D. or you won't get in... no exceptions.

Featuring retro-pop, rock, electro, hip hop and top 40 by
DJ artflick
DJ Like the Wolf
DJ Rambles
DJ Era

There will also be games and a special performance.

For more information about Gwen and her film "She's a Boy I Knew" please visit her website: www.artflick.com

This is a collective-run, volunteer-powered event. If you would like to volunteer, please email our volunteer coordinator: whitesockdrawer@yahoo.com

Venue Accessibility Information:
SPENT will be held at the ANZA club rental hall. To enter this space a person must climb 4 indoor steps (25 inches total height). The walls on either side of these stairs are about 40 inches apart, which could allow a person to brace themselves on either side. Once in the hall, there are no rises within the space (the bar, tables area and dance floor are all on one level). The washrooms are down a steep flight of stairs (20+ stairs) or, if you choose to exit the building and enter by the side entrance through the bar, it is down 7 steps. There are no wheelchair accessible stalls in either of the 2 washrooms.

****

*note: this is not a BENT collective or FOD collective event. This is an independent, one-off event organized by some former BENT collective members and friends of Gwen Haworth*

1:44 pm - Volunteers Needed: Study on Homophobia and Transphobia in High School

rainbodrk
 Hello,

My name is Rebecca Haskell. I am a graduate student in the School of Criminology at Simon Fraser University. I am conducting a study about homophobic and transphobic bullying in high schools. The study has gone on longer than expected due to some health issues, but I'm back in action and looking to set up a group discussion for the end of February. The research, involving group discussions with former high school students, is designed to inform practice, policy, and research and promote a safer learning environment for high school students in Canada.

Interested in being involved? Join a short (1-1.5 hour) one-time discussion group.

Do you meet the following criteria?

1)      Gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, two-spirited or queer (GLBTTQ) individual who feels that you were bullied in high school because of your sexual orientation or gender identity;

2)      19 years of age or older;

3)      graduated from or left a Canadian high school in the year 2002 or later.

NOTE: You did NOT have to be 'out' in high school to participate.

If you fit these criteria and are interested in discussing your experiences (both positive and negative) with other GLBTTQ people who have also experienced bullying you’re invited to participate! Refreshments will be provided.

For more information, or to volunteer, please contact Rebecca at bullystudy@hotmail.com or see www.myspace.com/htpbullystudy
