Free Speech

The anti-abortion activists are out on campus today. About an hour ago they were in front of Porter, right across from the Children's Institute (during their recess time of course). Thankfully they moved over to McKenny, where they are now.

The oddest thing of all is that there are a few children activists--specifically this little girl with the sign. I can't tell if she looks bored or determined, but I'm sure she's proud of this and feels important. She approached me to pass out a flyer, which I politely declined. Shouldn't she be in school today? [Edit: she's probably on spring break.]

I spared you the gory details of her poster, but I'll let you make your own opinions about this.

I think the posters are pretty offensive. I'm pro choice and those posters don't change my mind. If anything I'm more interested in looking at the anatomy of the fetus. Either way. I think it's an overly obscene way to get the point across.

Woooo for taking your children out of school so that they can picket for your one-sided morals. And what a jerk, pulling the sympathy card like that. Five bucks says he's mentioned to a couple of people, "Hey, you see this picture of a dead fetus? If my wife and I had been a liberal baby-killers, this could have been that little girl over there..."

Sad thing is that most children like that grow up to be adults who can't think for themselves either and it's hardly even their fault with parents like this dude.

I'm going to keep personal opinons out of this as much as possible, but I am REALLY glad that they moved away from the Children's Institute. As an employee there for the last four years, I know that we have too much on our plates before we have to deal with our children being beraided (sp.?) by such grotesque images. And regardless of where I stand on the issue, I don't think that anyone who sees those pictures, even those held by the kids, are going to be shocked into changing their beliefs. I can only imagine the conversation leading up to the kids joining their parents "wake up honey! Since you have no school today, come help daddy. Time to go pass out our propaganda to the sinners!!"

My parents use to do that, granted, their posters just said 'Pro-Life' and didn't try to shock people into believing what they believed. But they had me stand out with them one day when I was seven or eight. I thought it was a pain in the ass.

But I hate those pictures. Not even mentioning my political beliefs or whatever: those pictures make me sick and I wish they would leave me alone where I eat/shout "What is up?".

I really wish people would leave kids out of it. I can't imagine that 8 year old girl actually knows what the hell she's talking about. If they are going to protest something they should do so with people who actually know a thing or two about the subject, and have lived long enough to experience at least some of it first hand. As a pro lifer, it frustrates me beyond belief to see stupid shit like this. And those stupid posters are more obnoxious than persuasive. I have never heard of someone actually changing their mind about anything after seeing a picture of an aborted or stillborn baby.

Exactly. I'm pro-choice but I respect pro-lifers' opinions when they present them in a way that's respectful of my opinions too. Showing me pictures of aborted fetuses doesn't make me pro-life, it makes me want to kick a pro-life person's ass. Plus I don't like kids so the pictures don't do much for me :P

I'm gonna leave my opinion on the issue out, but honestly protesters make me really mad. Whether you think pro life is right or if you think pro choice is right...the fact of the matter is that people are going to do what they want no matter what other people tell them. Protesting is a waste of time! Let people think for themselves...that's the marvelous thing about the human race is that we can think for ourselves. Have your opinion on the issue and keep it to yourself. And if you do tell others...do it respectfully.

Protesting is a waste of time. But a protest is used for a symbolic statement. Which is all fine and dandy.

HOWEVER. Using photoshopped motive arousal stillbirths is an attempt to go out and piss people off. Hell, even the pro-lifers are offended.

I'm going to inject opinion in to this. How do we know the child hasn't made up their own choice? I bet that child is glad her parents didn't have an abortion, and none of her friends' parents had an abortion, and doesn't want you to have one either (well, some of you just shouldn't reproduce whatsoever).

I think that what they're doing is great! It's about time somebody stood up to all the liberal babykillers out there. This campus is full of them, and if I didn't have class and work today, I'd go out there and help pass stuff out. Shame on all of you for not doing the same!

Sinners.

People don't hit the age at which they start thinking for themselves until sometime between 20 and 80 years old. Her opinions are her parents' opinions, even if she is absolutely convinced she has made up her own mind.

I went to a counter-protest in Ann Arbor a few months back where they were southern baptist protesting against showing the Laramie's Project at U of M, and the same thing happened. Young Children being forced to hold signs saying shit like "Fags will burn in Hell." and "Thank god Matthew Sheperd is gone.", and they're forced to think a certain way, and scream certian words. I can't believe parents would do that to children so...viguriously. They're not even old enough to tie their own shoes, let alone make their own opinions.

If they aren't willing to pay for the medical bills during the pregnancy, and supporting the mother and child after birth and pitch in to be a sitter, and help raise the child, then they have no buisness telling me what to do with my body.

If they don't want an abortion, they don't have to have one!

Wow, first of all it is completly inapproptiate to be protesting abortion using graphic signs outside a freakin CHILDREN'S INSTITUTE!!! I know if I were a little kid and saw those signs, I'd be a little traumatized. I'm glad they moved (hopefully due to a complaint).

What I would rather see instead of this disgusting protest are people passing out information on the various kinds of birth control (pills, condoms, etc). I think educating people on how to prevent pregnancy in the first place is a much better solution than throwing it in people's faces that abortion is wrong and terrible. The more people who become educated and make smart decisions to prevent pregnancy, the less people there will be who become pregnant and want an abortion-sounds simple, doesn't it? (this obviously doesn't apply to rape victims, however) I know this would probably still be annoying to some people on campus, especially since most people already know the different ways to prevent pregnancy, but there are still some people who are stupid and make bad decisions regarding sex, and I think in the longrun educating them would more likely prevent them from getting an abortion in the future than seeing a photo of a dead fetus. (sorry, that was totally a run-on sentence there lol)

Unfortunatly, these people seem like extremists and probably don't support birth control either and believe that sex is only meant for producing babies...so they would probably be the last people to pass out information on birth control...

When does anyone really think for themselves? Values and beliefs are just pieces of experiences that you have endured put together like a puzzle. You believe what you do because of a mix of your parents telling you, your religion (ex. what makes you wrong/right), the media (ex. male/female gender roles), and your friends.

Even if you do "think for yourself" at 20 and beyond, your thoughts are more based on 'what are the consequences for me thinking this way" rather than "I will believe in this, completely arbitrarily to anything else!"
