Contemplation - Easter 2007
As Fran asked, here's a suggestion

Contemplation logo

Contemplation - an Eastercon replacement relaxacon/low-impact convention, to be held at the Britannia International Hotel, London Docklands over the Easter weekend 2007

In Fran's requested format: [1]

Relaxacon / London, Britannia International Docklands / people involved, none (or maybe Chris O'Shea if no one else steps forward) / 300ish (total guess) / 600 / room rates about £40-45pppn, no idea on membership rate (probably would take a straight transfer of Convoy membership) / official Eastercon? Yes, if possible, to simplify voting etc.

and in pseudo XML
<name>Contemplation</name>
<eventType>Relaxacon/Eastercon-lite</eventType>
<location>Britannia International Hotel, London Docklands</location>
<committee>Chris O'Shea, Hayley and anyone else that volunteers!</committee>
<minsize>300?</minsize>
<maxsize>750</maxsize>
<rates>membership tbd, probably £45</rates>
<eastercon>Yes, it would be a replacement Eastercon</eastercon>
<contactDetails>Chris O'Shea</name>
<email>contemplation@con.org</email>
<web>http://www.smof.com/contemplation</web>
<notes>Room rates around £40-45pppn sharing. Minimal programming but maximum socialising and having fun (plus a 2009 bid session). The programme may include London sightseeing. Hotel has a pool/healthclub. Easy access (via Docklands Light Railway) to central London.</notes>

[1] Event type / proposed location (city, venue) / people involved / minimum attendee size to make it viable / maximum attendee size you'd be prepared to handle / any ideas on cost / would you want to be the official Eastercon?

Chris, if you go ahead with this, I would be happy to lend a hand, although I am not sure what I can do at this distance. Still, if I can do it, I will.

Thank you!

Don't mention it, and ignore the look of trepidation...

I'd see what I could do (which may well be nothing).

Marcia won't be able to do anything: her mother is sick again (possible operation rather than accident this time).

Thanks Tim

Let's see what happens in the next week or so and particularly what comes out of Novacon.

There are rumours of a couple of other groups researching stuff, but I felt it important to have at least that irritating speck of dust for the snowflake/raindrop/pearl to form around :-) and I am that irritant!

Send my best wishes to Marcia, and I'm praying for her mother.

One possible venue that may be worth looking at is the old Redemption venue, the Ashford International. It has a great social space, decent restaurant, flexible programme space, will fit up to 600 (that was the size of the last Who's Seven held there) and a Sainsburys next door. Granted they became a bit of a pain in the arse after '01, but still may be worth a look (as long as they find a way to do real ale).
There is also the Palace Hotel in Manchester which we liked but which we thought might be a bit tight on function space and turned out to have all its rooms booked for '08.

Thanks

I'll phone Judith and ask for the appropriate contact there.

I'll second the suggestion of Ashford International. It has the best social space I've experienced at a con.

I've phoned the Ashford and they are going to dig out the Redemption contracts and then see what they can offer us for Easter (which I'll take as an indication that they aren't booked up at Easter).

Hopefully I'll get a reply this afternoon before heading off for Novacon.

email is being bounced right back. Am I being unbelievably dense or is it down?

Thanks for that

... that's my fault, I forgot to add it to the list of valid "smof.com" addresses, I'll try to get that fixed now.

Probably now not fixable until the morning ... I'd better update the website :-(

Wow, great, Chris: you mean you're actually going to do something for once?

Oh, no, my mistake. You're just going to claim credit for the work that other people do. Again.

Ah well, I'm sure someone will run an Eastercon that you can claim credit for. Again.
