| Time-Flight revisited |
[05 Jul 2009|11:01pm] |
|
As I rewatch TIME FLIGHT (in my efforts to get through ALL of DW from UNEARTHLY CHILD onwards)I noticed how I like it more now. I also n oticed by mistakenly turning on the DVD commentary how Davison and Fielding are flippant concerning Adric. Davison says something like real acting there as we were all really laughing about, and then tries to cover by saying these emotioning scenes are hard to do but also that Fielding says real acting to Davison's as if we really miss Adric...

| Newest DW Magazine Issue |
[13 Apr 2009|01:22pm] |
|
The new issue, 407(!) has a retrospective of CASTROVALVA. Nothing special in it really. THe new book COMPANIONS AND ALLIES has an Adric page spread, again nothing really new. There seems to be a picture of Adric and the writer of FULL CIRCLE.

| DWMagazine--New issue |
[15 Mar 2009|07:03pm] |

Has a fact file on Logopolis and next issue seems as if it will continue with Castrovalva. A few new Adric pics I've never seen before and a few tidbits of new info, nothing major but interesting all the same. It's intersting to note that in DW history, around the time of Sarah Jane's leaving they were thinking of killing off Sarah, the Brig and they did seem to kill off Benton in the awful ANDRoID INVASION! Then later there were discussions of killing off Leela and even, I think Romana. Pity our boy won out.

| Missed opportunity |
[28 Jan 2009|08:41pm] |
Chasepan asks this in the last post. I thought I'd start it as a new thread rather than have it be buried in a discussion on the DVDs. Chasepan said (in asterisks): **The other thing is ih hindsight when I first saw these, before knowing Adric was going to die...the possibility of Adric was immense. NOW knowing what happens, it's sort of again, a missed opportunity. Matthew comments on how he loved how he and Tom were together in those KEEPER TARDIS scenes and yet he knew it couldn't go on and on that way for long since Nyssa was joining and he knew that...but at the time I as a viewer, did'nt know that. I would have preferred Adric and the Doc stay together and alone without the stupid girls! It sort of makes all of these stories less exciting knowing where Adric was going to end up...** Hindsight is great! I agree I would have loved the Doc and Adric alone for a bit longer. He works well with Nyssa and I quite like her other-wordliness and gentleness in Traken as well as her haughtiness. Unfortunately the scriptwriters did not persue this facet of her, preferring to turn her into a head prefect, always being a killjoy and tutting at Adric (ie Four, Visitation). In my head, I think the original Nyssa and Adric would have been a great team. J Byrne says the same. He points out that Adric had real mileage as a character. Nyssa could have been the gentle one, the analyst. Adric the go-getter, the impetuous one, the loyal one. He'd have been the brave one who acted as a catalyst. The standard need for a companion as someone for the Doc to vomit plot points at could have been achieved by either. Certainly Tegan as an Earthling is 'easier' for this since we have a common frame of reference with her, but all in all, I would have been delighted for her not have been kept on. I don't think Nyssa was the problem - it was Tegan who stole Adric's thunder. I also would have loved to see where the plot would have gone had Five travelled with Adric exclusively. The show would have been very different. No need for the stupid teenage sub-themes. Adric could have been impulsive, fun, loyal, niave - but also respected for his talents and loyalty. I would have loved to see them together. Adric would not have felt the need to keep 'proving' himself, no need for the stupid squabbling... Still that's why we write fan fic...

| Doctor Who comic: Forbidden issue 6 |
[24 Jan 2009|01:39pm] |
Uhm, fans here might want to get issue 6 of the DW comic: Forbidden. That's all I can say. I briefly for now went through it and fans here will want it.
In unrelated but related news: On Leverage last week at the airport, the code names given to the members of the team were: Peter Davison, Slyvester McCoy, Tom Baker, and Mrs. Sarah Jane Baker!

| Companion Chronicles 3.6: Darkening Eye part two |
[16 Dec 2008|06:16pm] |
Okay this isn't terrible but the whole thing, being a Nyssa narrated/Sarah Sutton acted thing is mostly as predicted a Nyssa centered story. Adric is sidelined for almost all of part two and I"m not even sure...I wasn't really paying attention by the end...if they even told us if Adric got aboard in the end. SO there's the Doctor, Nyssa and Tegan...this could almost have been a story set after ARC OF INFINITY and no one would notice.
It's odd but so often in the early years wished for a story with Adric...ANY story with Adric to be set in that time period and so few were, now that there are some...I find I wish they weren't. They are so mediocre...I mean this one is not a bad story but not a great one either and I find it okay but boring, tedious, certainly not as bad as BOY THAT FORGOT TIME...but somehow especially during the Peter Davison era, squeezing that much into one gap or any gap during Doc5's run...seems to drag the whole thing anad the whole feel of that era down more and more rather than add to it in a better way as the other Doctor stories mostly do.

| Death of two other "companions" |
[15 Dec 2008|06:03pm] |
|
This might or might not have to do with Adric but anyway, the Doctor seems more responsible for the death of two othres. Okay, it seems to me that the First Doctor CAUSED both Katarina and Sara Kingdom's deaths. First, he doesn't know about he airlock on that spaceship and that he should close it. This makes the criminal get aboard who eventually uses Katarina and she ejects herself out into space. Then he turns the Time Destructor on and rather than saying to Sara, "Run as fast as you can out of here," he tells her, "Just let me know if you feel funny," and he doesn't turn it off or even try when she's aging. In addition, Steven just flicks a switch and turns it in reverse, which might have given Sara some time to get back to the TARDIS. The old git!

| Companion Chronicles 3.6: Darkening Eye part one |
[15 Dec 2008|05:54pm] |
Well this arrived and I started listening to it. The first cliffhanger deals with Adric. Also we find out that Adric has his heart on the right side rather than on "our" left side. Thus far, Adric is not portrayed too badly or in a bad light. I just think most writers fail to see the roundness of the character and most DW writers seem to peg him (and other charcters as well) in one or two ways and that's it. Adric is a full person, with faults, fears, flaws, good aspects. Sometimes, and here I can sense this...they pigeonhole him into a person who has little warmth for those around him, little care for the deaths of aliens or other strangers, and a sort of annoyance with others who don't know as much as he does, as well as being somewhat annoying and out of touch with all things science. This is not what was depicted on tv most of the time. Adric does care about others, especially his travelling companions, does show compassion for those in trouble, understands science (and in this and in FOUR TO DD he's always asking what's that? as if he knew nothing), is inquistive, and is not annoying all the time.
I guess I"m painting this in a bad light but thus far, it's not that bad. I will have to report back about the second part soon.
Remember the first part of the BOY WHO FORGOT TIME was not all that bad either and the cliffhanger was really well done.
The first part of this story is not that bad either and the cliffhanger is really well done.
Somehow the aliens in this sense that death follows Adric...and Tegan as well (from the Mara maybe)

Okay so it's been how many years since SHORT TRIPS did an Adric story? I open the newest one, a Xmas one, book 27 and the first story is a Tom Baker Doctor/Adric story! And it's not too bad and it's easy on Adric! And Adric's thoughts are gone into at least at first. !! I think I will write to them and tell them I appreciate that.

| Traken question |
[12 Oct 2008|09:53pm] |
Not really that relevant but there's not much happening over here on Earthschocked so ... I was watching Traken on DVD today and was puzzled by a mysterious coat hanging on the Doc's coat-stand in the console room. It's in the scenes between the Doc, Adric and the Keeper in the consol room in ep 1. It seems to be a beige thing. Considering JNT's penchant for continuity, I am assuming that this coat was worn by one of the TARDIS residents recently but can think of no time when it was. I admit I haven't seen warriors in ages but don't recall any plot point in Full Circle or State of Decay when any of the crew wore such an outfit. true Adric and Roman both wear Tudoresque costumes in Decay but this coat doesn't look like these. Any thoughts anyone? It's driving me mad1 One little slip-up i think I have mentioned before is that Adric is not wearing his marsh belt when he and the Doc first step into the Grove.
