This community is dedicated to the discussion and promotion of early modern literature and history -- the Renaissance, as it's usually called, which makes it sound like an event rather than a process. Any historical, literary, cultural topic is up for discussion: my own bias is pretty heavily English, but of course you can bring up Continental or non-European topics if you're so inclined. The time period is a bit fuzzy, since what we define as "early modern" rather than "medieval" is likewise fuzzy (unless you want to lump the whole period together); I'm thinking that the fourteenth through the mid-seventeenth century sounds about right.

middle_ages, whose introduction and purpose I'm totally ripping off) this isn't intended to be a community for re-enactment or roleplaying -- perfectly honorable pastimes, but there are other avenues for that. Also, we will not do your homework for you, so don't ask (and bear in mind this was a great era for unpleasant punishment ;) ).
Optional survey for newcomers:
What interests you about the early modern period? Do you have a favorite text/historical figure/concept/area of study or whatever? (Multiple answers are of course allowed, nay, encouraged.)
How do you feel about the whole Renaissance vs. early modern nomenclature debate?
We all know nobody really wants to live in a time before sanitation, antibiotics, central air conditioning/heating, indoor plumbing, and so forth. So if you could visit any time/place in the early modern period, what would it be, and why?
Have you read The Faerie Queene? Be honest. ;)
