The Doctor Meets Dr. Horrible Halloween
Heya
So here's a minor recap on my Halloween as The Doctor at a Halloween Party, the L.A. charity Dr. Horrible Screening and in my non-Who costume for a work contest....
More Pics and Info
So on Sunday, the 26th, I had plans to go to 2 Halloween parties dressed as Eight since that was the only costume I had that worked equally well for both events. Sadly the second party fell by the way side as things ran late at the first party and it wasn't worth the cover charge to go in for only an hour. It's sad because at the party we did go to- put on by one of our friends, only about 4 people includng us were in costume out of about 30. So while the hosts thought we looked great - we stood out in a bad way.
As Eight
Here's some pics prior to the Sunday party. I loved wearing Eight but I can plainly see my friend does a much better job and is simply 'cast' better so I doubt I'll be doing this one again anytime soon. If anything though it made me learn how to tie a cravat - invaluable for Doctor Who cosplayers! I was told at the shindig we missed there were lots of great costumes and it as more of a ball. I know which one I'm going to next year then!
On Friday, Halloween proper - for our work costume contest my dept entered as a group as 5 characters from the 1986 John Carpenter film "Big Trouble in Little China" (Jack Burton, Gracie Law, and the Three Storms - Rain, Thunder and Lightning). My friend Rick (our SDCC Seven Cosplayer) sourced/made pretty much all of these costume sin under a week and I thought did a phenomenal job considering his time and budget limitations. I got to wear the Rain costume which I thought looked awesome and was worth being super restricted for a couple of hours...
Big Trouble!
Sadly though we were up against only one other group - two characters from the Nightmare Before Christmas and we lost. Bummer man. Like the comic strip I posted earlier our thought was even with reference photos provided we were still simply too obscure. Although we had several people aferwards tell us we got robbed. Nice to know we were appreciated in some quarters.
(who we lost to)
That night my GF and I planned was to hit the WeHo parade for an hour and then zip down to the Dr. Horrible charity screening. Well traffic was so bad we were late even getting to the screening - so we nixed the parade entirely. Luckily the screening started late so we were really on time. She wore her Medievel Wench outfit and I donned my old favorite - the Four costume. I got some fresh jelly babies and I was off and running.

In the end I'm glad we went to the screening since it was a crowd where about half of the people at least knew who I was! I didn't go into full Tom baker mode though- it didn't seem like the right event for it and I think it would made my GF too embarrassed. Sometimes you pick your battles. I got a few puzzled looks from the New Series/Ten fans though. I told someone I was THE Doctor- the Definite Article you might say... and they told me "tsk tsk- you chouldn't say that around here! People would disagree with you!" Whether she was referring to Dr. Horrible or the reaction to Tennant's departure. I can't say. Either way I found it amusing. I told her all of he is me and all of he is me so all the Doctors should be viewed equally. That seemed to let me off the hook.
Back in the Indy Hat Four
I showed my sonic screwdriver to two new series fans who didn't recognize it. They asked if it lit up or made a noise. I told them it didn't need to. It's a tool, not a magic wand! The same folks thought the TARDIS key was some sort of medallion - ahhhh well - glad to educate newer fans on Classic Who! Alikhat - one of the whedonopolis phtographers - commended me on the costume although I was suggested to do 'one of the longer coats' next time. Granted there's 4 styles of those... Though I suppose the brown velvet frock Season 14 look would be the variation I would try for next (and finally tackle the elusive plaid vest!), but I have other costume fish to fry before then.
When walking out of the theater a girl did stop me to say I was the best Doctor Who she'd ever seen. This of course earned her a few jelly babies. :)
The Doctor gets a shocking message (and song) from Bad Horse- the Thoroughbred of Sin!
Overall though we had a really great time. It was a lot of fun to watch The Guild and Dr. Horrible with a crowd - truly "sing-a-long" with the blog, wave some curtains etc and take some cool pics wih other Dr. Horrible costumers. I think I counted about 4 or 5 Captain hammers, and 7 Dr. horribles (3 in white, 4 in red) along with 1 or 2 Pennys and the two Bad Horse telegram guys. It was certainly more fun and relaxing than the parade would have been!
Joss Whedon, Felicia Day, Nathan Fillion, (plus Alan Tudyk) and others showed up at the end as well to say a few words which really was a surprise and a nice end to the evening.
Nathan and Joss on stage
Though I waited outside to simply shake thier hands- most of them brushed straight through without making a lot of eye contact. Joss stopped for a few pics and autographs though. Although he gave me a bit of an odd look in my Four costume so I took that as a sign to hang back. I gave him a a little wave worthy of Tom Baker though. :) Maybe he was offended I wasn't dressed as a Dr. Horrible character? Oh well.
Joss leaving the theater
I also bumped into hystericblue42 in the theater and aimeekitty (good to meet you again) who I thought had a really funny t-shirt on (something my GF pointed out when you walked away - nicely done!).
With AimeeKitty- And Captain Hammer and Penny.
After Joss left we saw a double decker party bus drive up to the stoplight where a bunch of folks dressed as 80's Rockers cheered and hollered at us across the street. I swear i heard one of them identify me as Doctor Who but I can't be certain. I grinned and doffed my hat just in case.
Speaking of hats, my only minor regret was my custom Four hat was being worked on, so I was forced back into my Indiana Jones fedora on Halloween. Grrr. (Although it didn't look that bad. Proof positive that it is indeed the go-to starter hat for any Four costumer!) Oh well, I finally got it back today from Baron's and it looks better than ever with a taller/reshaped crown but still, I get miffed when a business slacks on a deadline!
On Sunday we made a few Halloween store rounds cleaning up on some deals. I got another possible piece for my Peter Pratt Master (yes - the Decaying Deadly Assassin Master. It's happening. Tell your friends.) and a nice "moving Hand" Hand of Fear prop for a Sarah Jane I keep trying to persuade my GF to do. We'll see there.
Anyway hope everyone else had a swell Halloween... til Gallifrey then?
