Community Rules
Things which are very much encouraged - doing these will get you heaps of love and adoration from the mods and everyone else.
- Discussing anything related to Doctor Who. This is the main purpose of the community. We want you to discuss New Who; Old Who; Audio Who; Torchwood; Sarah Jane Adventures; Books, Plays and Magazines related to Who; Who news; Who Merchandise; how Who has affected your life; and what Who means to you. Particularly encouraged are voyages of discovery around a new-to-you area of fandom. Are you a Classic!Who fan who has finally taken the plunge into the new series? Have you suddenly discovered the New Adventures novels or Big Finish? Do you love your Remote Control Davros? We want to know!Things which are not encouraged - doing these will not get your post deleted, but will lead to one of the mods having a word in your shell-like.
- Long thoughtful review posts. We're geeky and we're proud, and we like to see other people being geeky and proud.
- Reactions to Who-related news. Whether a piece of news makes you ecstatically happy, or cross, or scared for the future of the show, we want to know.
- Questions! We like people who ask questions because it shows an eagerness to learn.
- Polls! Polls are a good way of taking a snapshot of the feelings of the community on any given issue.
- Controversial Opinions. The community is here for discussion. If everybody agrees with each other, discussion dies.
- Disagreeing with the mods' opinions. The mods are here for administrative purposes, but other than that, we're just like you: we love the show and we want to discuss it. Our opinions are not more important than yours (whatevermiss_s_b's ego might have to say on this matter).
- Illustrating your posts. We like pictures, they make a post look more interesting.
- Formatting your posts well. We like it if you use headings and bold and emphasis. Long unbroken paragraphs make people's eyes glaze over and then they might not read your new and exciting insights.
- Good post titles. It's nice if the title of the post tells people what the content of the post will be. Feel free to include stuff like the title of the episode you are discussing and which series it comes from, the name of the toy and it's manufacturer, the title and publisher of the book, etc.
- Tagging! Only mods can create new tags, but we like them to liberally applied to your posts: this makes it easier for people to search the comm.
- Spoiler cuts. Not everybody has seen every episode of Who, and some people like to remain unspoiled for even the oldest eps. If in doubt, cut, but do PLEASE include the name of the item you are talking about somewhere outside the cut. There's no point in cutting if everyone has to click on the cut to find out why ;)
- Image cuts. Large images should be under a cut. Small images are fine uncut, but do bear in mind that other people's definition of what is large and small might differ from yours.
- Intro Posts! If you join us, tell us a bit about yourself and your relationship with The Doctor, and we'll welcome you. Check out our "Classic Who Advice For Newbies" post, add to it if you like, put your feet under the table, and make yourself at home!
- Repeat posts. Before you post a question, or a poll, or that you spotted something in the latest show, check to see that someone else hasn't posted the same thing before you.Things which are not allowed - doing these will definitely get your post deleted, and in extreme cases will get you barred from the comm.
- Posts with little or no content. This means bare links to news items, posts that simply consist of the word "squee!", pimping a new community without any discussion of its contents, etc. Also in this category, we discourage posts linking back to your own journal (except in the comments to the Official Show Night posts). The community exists to foster discussion among the members, not draw discussion away to elsewhere.
- 1337-speak, txtspeak and LOLcatpeak. While fine in moderation, please bear in mind that some members do not have English as their first language, and use of non-standard English makes it harder for them to contribute to the discussions.
- Ad Hominem attacks. While we welcome your disagreement with other members, we want you to play the ball, not the man. A good resource to see if you are debating well or debating badly is to check to see if you are using the techniques described in Conversational Terrorism. See Bashing Policy below for further details.
- Repeatedly posting Non-Discussion posts. This includes but is not limited to Fanfic, Fanvids, GIPs, Fanmixes, and Fanart; it's not that we don't like these things, it's that we prefer to keep this comm focussed on debate. We have loads of Affiliate and Recommended communities listed below, and many of them welcome this sort of contribution.Bashing Policy
- Posting things which are in breach of copyright or otherwise illegal. We don't want the comm shut down by overzealous lawyers, and we hope you don't either.
- Stalking and/or persistent personal abuse of community members. This doesn't really need an explanation does it?
- Repeated failure to understand/adhere to the Rules and Bashing Policy. If we end up having to warn you about your conduct lots, this is maybe a sign that you don't fit in here.
"Bashing" is something of a hot topic in Fandom, and everyone has a different definition of what it means. Here atHopefully that's all clear! Now, onto the fun stuff:dw_academy, we don't believe that fictional characters have feelings, and therefore are not touchy about people expressing negative views of them: however, we prefer that those views be backed up with evidence. We believe strongly in freedom of speech, and do not wish to unduly restrict it. As always, however, there is a continuum: some things are worse than others, and we expect you to use your judgement and be considerate of the feelings of others. Questionable viewpoints are tolerated, but might lead to heated discussion; Not Acceptable viewpoints will lead to the mods coming down on you heavily.
There follow some examples of what is Acceptable, Questionable, and Not Acceptable conduct:Acceptable: The Brigadier is an militaristic idiot and I can't understand why fandom has such affection for him. Please explain to me your fondness for this character?
Questionable: The Brigadier is a militaristic idiot and I wish people would shut up about him.
Not Acceptable: The Brigadier is a militaristic idiot and anyone who likes him is also a complete idiot and I wish Brigadier fans would go and die in a fire.
Acceptable: Robert Holmes's stories took the show in the wrong direction.
Questionable: Robert Holmes is a glorified fanficcer with no talent.
Not Acceptable: Robert Holmes is a complete wanker, and if he weren't already dead I'd wish he would go and die in a fire.
