Vote Saxon!
The Herts and Essex Observer has a poll going on it's front page. They want to know who the best Prime Minister was. The have the options you would expect - Blair, Thatcher, that kind of thing. They also have Jim Hacker and Harold Saxon as options...

Hacker was a hack, ruled by his civil servants. I say VOTE SAXON! Even if Ann Widdecombe likes him...

Hacker may indeed have been a hack, but he was damned funny.

Harold Saxon is currently leading. Clearly they don't take these polls seriously- David Jason won the "Best Batman" one.

Hmm... while Hacker was definitely ruled by his civil servants when he was working for the DAA, by the time he became PM he had enough ability to push through at least *some* of his agenda.

I think the negative public perception of him mostly comes from the publication of his diaries - and which other Prime Minister ever did that, even posthumously? - along with the sniping from his PPS and Cabinet Secretary that somehow made it into them. Yes, he had to compromise - which politician doesn't? And to be fair to him, no Tory PM could possibly have got unilateral disarmament through Cabinet as their first real policy choice, even if it *wasn't* the height of the Cold War, let alone straight after one of the most bitterly-contested leadership contests in recent memory. And the national ID database idea was just stupid, frankly, and I'm glad wiser heads prevailed.

But he managed to push through a series of decent, moderate reforms while being pro-European and keeping the unions on side. Imagine how much worse it could have been. I mean, we could have had Thatcher or someone!

This is truly a sad, sad thing.

But oh so very, very funny.

Even realizing that Who fans have skewed this poll more than a bit, Saxon has over 50% of the vote.
