About
My reasons for making this community is because I, myself would like to feel comfortable when I express my feelings concerning being biracial without someone misunderstanding what I'm saying and taking it out of context of what I really meant. Being in an interracial relationship is not the same as being biracial! A lot of people assume they are the same. I found that I was welcomed in certain communities that are geared to one particular racial group. As soon as I decided to share my experiences or views on how myself and others like me are treated by some in this particular racial group, the welcome mat is snatch right up from under me. I realized I didn't have a voice in communities that are geared to one particular racial group (that I am half of), and communities that welcome mixed people, but is diverse with non-mixed people.

Then you have to deal with the Charlatans and people claiming semantics and labels are just words and they don't define you. True, they don't define you "only". If this was so true, why do racism exist? Why do these very people use and embrace the very words they claim are merely words?

I picked this name from the word Dubious

1 : giving rise to uncertainty: as a : of doubtful promise or outcome b : questionable or suspect as to true nature or quality.
2 : unsettled in opinion : DOUBTFUL

Something you need to know about being Biracial

Identity Issues and Concerns of Biracial Children:

May experience a sense of being different (physical appearance, name, foreign birthplace, language, values and beliefs of parents) - often asked by others "What are you?"

May experience self as not fully belonging to any of the comparison groups

May have difficulty incorporating two different heritages into one identity

May experience prejudice from two ethnic groups

May have difficulty dealing with integrating two distinct parenting styles and beliefs

May experience pressure from one parent to identify more with his/her race than with the other parent's.

Often identify or over identify with one parent and one racial group while developing ambivalence toward the other parent. May feel embarrassed by this other parent's race.

May have feelings of guilt or embarrassment about family and self-racial differentness.

May have difficulty finding others who understand their struggle (i.e. parents, peer, or friends).

May experience social pressure to identify with one group and label self as such (many black children experience pressure to identify as "black" even if they prefer to identify as "white" or "mixed").

May attempt to separate off aspects of themselves in response to loyalty and acceptance needs.

May experience or exhibit the following problems: poor academic achievement, off task behavior, poor social skills, negative attitudes about adults, social isolation, "chip-on-the-shoulder" attitudes, aggressive behavior toward parents, sadness and depression, intrafamilial conflicts, substance abuse, psychosomatic disorders, and suicidal ideation and behaviors.

Bill of Rights for Racially Mixed People
By Maria P.P. Root

I HAVE THE RIGHT...

Not to justify my existence in this world.

Not to keep the races separate within me.

Not to be responsible for people's discomfort with my physical ambiguity.

Not to justify my ethnic legitimacy.

I HAVE THE RIGHT...

To identify myself differently than strangers expect me to identify.

To identify myself differently from how my parents identify me.

To identify myself differently from my brothers and sisters.

To identify myself differently in different situations.

I HAVE THE RIGHT...

To create a vocabulary to communicate about being multiracial.

To change my identity over my lifetime -- and more than once.

To have loyalties and identification with more than one group of people.

To freely choose whom I befriend and love.

Society won’t see you as mixed or Japanese but BLACK". I can’t count the number of times I have heard this argument. What I do know is that no society can tell me that I am more of one culture than another because of the way someone else defines me. I am Blackanese—a mixture of the two in ways that cannot be divided. My body and mentality is not split down the middle where half is black and the other half is Japanese. I have taken the aspects of both worlds to create my own worldviews and identity. The woman who happens to be my mother will never hear, 'Mom, I’m just black' from my mouth because I’m not and no person—society or government—will force me to do that and deny my reality and my being, no matter how offensive I am to their country and how much of a nuisance I am to their cause. I am Blackanese."

"To be rejected by the identity or identities you embrace, simply because you openly accept the reality of from whence you came, is to feel certain that your very existence is, and forever will be, a brutal battlefield for black and white. The decision to accept and welcome each part of yourself, to find resolution in the discord by which you were created, is to refuse to allow the battle against racism, in which you fight, to strip you of your right. Your right to acknowledge that your enemies and your allies may despise you, but inside of you they coexist as one; that you will always fight with your allies against the enemy, but you refuse to ever fight yourself."

"Understanding biracialism as a multidimensional phenomenon has important implications for family therapists working with mixed-race clients and interracial families. Although much of the existing therapeutic literature has been (mis) guided by essentialist assumptions of a singular appropriate identity model for mixed-race people, we take a different position. We argue that there are multiple ways in which mixed-race people can identify racially, and no one way is better than another. The greatest challenge arises when individuals select a racial identity that is routinely invalidated by others.

Human beings are relational by nature. It is through relational processes that we are conceived, born into the world, and develops a sense of identity. Our identities are shaped through our social interactions with others. This shaping process involves a multitude of experiences, but a crucial aspect of developing a strong healthy sense of identity involves receiving validation from others. How others respond to us has a powerful impact upon the types of people we become, how we feel about ourselves and the world around us, and our overall level of psychological health. Individuals may vary with respect to the degree of validation they require to feel secure, but ultimately, validation is essential to psychological survival. All of us must receive some validation from others if we are to grow and develop in healthy ways. With respect to racial identity, we posit that it is the degree of validation/invalidation one receives, more than the actual identity one chooses, that has a more salient influence on overall psychological health. Hence, those persons who are consistently invalidated in their preferred definition of self, are likely to exhibit the greatest psychological distress."
