Hello, everybody. I’d like to talk about a certain pop singer and a certain Japanese voice actor.

It’s BoA. She is one of my favourite singers, but that’s not the point. She is Korean but she speaks fluent Japanese, has released six albums in Japanese and is famous in Japan.

She also played Heather in the Japanese dub of Over the Hedge:

See that? The Japanese dub of Over the Hedge. I bet a lot of people think that this is completely made of Win. Some might even think that she is better than Avril Lavigne, who was the original actress.

And I bet that a lot of you people who think that the Japanese version is always superior will recognise this chap here…

It’s Kappei Yamaguchi, who appears to be quite a well-respected voice actor in Japan (although I’m not exactly sure how famous he is) and seems to have quite a significant number of English-speaking anime fans too. He played Inuyasha in the original version, apparently. But not only that, but he also plays the Japanese voice of Goofy’s son Max in House of Mouse (and apparently A Goofy Movie as well although I have no idea about Goof Troop or An Extremely Goofy Movie):

Now, I bet you guys think that this is really cool and think that he is absolutely brilliant as Maxie already.

If so, is it brilliant and amazing enough for you to stop saying that all English dubs are full of fail and stop bashing English dubs just because the English actors are celebrities? Please? I have yet to hear anybody complain about BoA and Kappei Yamaguchi doing dubs (in fact, I’ve heard quite the opposite their cases). What's up with that?

Agreed with the first comment. A lot of fans can be hypocritical.

It's very unfortunate that there are fans who take such an attitude to English voice acting in general. Perhaps there are some dubs which aren't up to par, but to say that all English dubs are inferior is both mean and unfair just because the Japanese VAs have a different style of acting. Personally, I do not buy the argument that the Japanese VAs are to be worshipped (don't get me wrong, I respect them, but not in the same way that some of these fanatics do) and that the American VAs, no matter what they do, will never be good enough. I've been watching Anime with dubs since the beginning of my fandom, and I've never felt like I'm missing out on anything, even when I occasionally flip to the Japanese audio.

That said, I do find it bizarre too that few seem to have any problem with Japanese VAs dubbing American animated films, while the mention of American VAs dubbing Japanese anime is cause for commotion. Why can't both versions exist? Why should there be a "superior-inferior" atmosphere? Why can't we accept both versions at face value?

I wonder if Japanese fans react the same way to dubbing of foriegn works as American fans react to anime? It would be amazing if they did.
