"Too bad I'm a loser" by belmanoir
Title: Too bad I'm a loser
Fandom and Pairing: due South, Ray/Ray
Rating: R
Length: 300
Prompt: Anything plain can be lovely, anything loved can be lost
Maybe I lost my direction, what if our love is the cost?
Anyone perfect must be lying, anything easy has its cost
Anyone plain can be lovely, anyone loved can be lost

"Falling For The First Time," Barenaked Ladies

Author’s Notes: Still one of my favorite Ray/Ray songs. Beta'd by [info]snoopypez.

Ray realized he'd been tricked with Stella and Fraser. They were both so stunning that he'd never noticed how someone could be hot just because you liked them. So he'd gone merrily along, thinking Vecchio was a terrible dresser and really kind of funny-looking, and then one day they were in some training meeting on how to not kill yourself with your own nightstick which he and Vecchio didn't carry anyway, and Ray was bored out of his mind and pictured Vecchio blowing him just for the hell of it.

He spent the rest of the day trying to hide his erection under the stupid chair-desks they probably stole from an elementary school because Ray barely fit without the boner.

Things were never gonna be easy with Vecchio. Vecchio was a pain in the ass, and he told Ray exactly how he was pissing him off every second. It had always been easy with Stella, once the preliminaries were out of the way. She'd been easy and great--right up until she said, "Ray, I think maybe you take me for granted and I told you I didn't want kids when we were seventeen, shit," and burst into tears and moved out.

The problem was that Ray'd never actually asked anyone out except Stella. Sometimes girls asked him, and he went, but he never asked. And Fraser--nothing had ever happened with Fraser. Something had to happen with Vecchio or Ray was gonna go insane. And just because Vecchio was difficult and funny-looking, it didn't mean Ray couldn't fuck this up.

Luckily it turned out that Vecchio had been shot down by way more people than just Stella. Vecchio had lines and all kinds of moves that were obvious and stupid and that Ray was all kinds of grateful for.

STELLLLLAAAA!

It's just so perfect for them! They're both these tough guys who are giant softies on the inside, and anyone perfect=Fraser and anything easy=Stella and they are both kinda plain in AN INCREDIBLY FUCKING LOVELY WAY oh man I love them.

Thank you.

I love the idea of Kowalski never having asked anyone other then Stella out before. LOVE IT.

And aw, I also love the idea of Vecchio putting his really obvious moves on Kowalski.

Kowalski is such a non-Stella virgin, it's adorable. And yeah, wow, how much would I pay to watch Vecchio use a line on Kowalski?

Yeah, just for the hell of it. I believe him, sure. I hated those stupid desk-chairs, too. *g*

I love the idea that Kowalski doesn't have experience with dating. The fics where he does still maks sense, but I like that idea better. I'd love to see the fic where Kowalski tries to start dating again, and he sucks at it, and he keeps running into Vecchio when he's out trying to pick up women (and getting rejected).

oh man, i want to see that fic too. i want vecchio to like, teach him his moves and then laugh when he gets rejected. and then buy him a drink, with the excuse that it's like priming the pump. and then as kowalski fails harder and harder (by now he's a bit distracted), vecchio suggests roleplays. AND THEY HAVE SEX IN THE ALLEY!

Way to make me happy first thing in the morning. *beams* I love so much the idea of Kowalski picturing Vecchio blowing him for the hell of it (bzuh, what? warning sign much?) and the desks and Stella and the non-moves and Vecchio the move-saviour and YAY, basically.

*hearts*

thank you!!!

that is actually sort of the experience i had with vecchio. i mean, at first i wasn't attracted to him, even though i totally loved him instantly. and then as the series went on, i liked him more and more but i was still like, ugh, his hair, i dunno. and then one day i was like, i wonder if i'm into vecchio yet, and um, pulled up some mental images and OH BOY WAS I INTO VECCHIO WHO KNEW?

um. sorry if that was tmi.

Oh wow, I love how you're fitting the song into the snippet and subtle-like and stuff.

Yay! I love Ray/Ray, and this made a lot of sense. I liked the way you made use of the prompt to illustrate how some people can just get under your skin and grow on you, becoming more appealing the longer you've known them. That's just as true in life as it is in fiction, and I loved the object lesson you created based on those lyrics. Well done, sirrah!

thanks! vecchio and kowalski both started out at "funny-looking" and grew on me, but in the end i think i actually tend to be more attracted to people who grew on me than people who i was instantly interested in. with the exception of fraser, whose hotness kind of breaks the laws of physics.

It is very true that people you don't think of necessarily as attractive can become more and more attractive the better you get to know them. And I love nervous!Ray. Combined with inexperienced!Ray, it's a total win! But I always think of Vecchio's smoothness as bluff!Ray, that inside he's not that smooth. (But who is?)

I mean, Vecchio's also not very smooth on the outside. But he THINKS he is. Which is adorable and a half!

Oh! Oh! Dork Love! Dorkish Delight! (sorry. low caffeine levels)

Hee. Ray's surprising fantasy life. I'm so glad Vecchio's braver than Ray right here. Not so much with the smoother, but Ray is looking more for brave, and that kinda smooths over Vecchio's rough edges very nicely.

thank you!! yeah, i don't think kowalski cares if his bf is smooth so long as the guy likes him. it just doesn't seem like something he would care about.
