Dragoncon: BritTrack 2008 Events' Schedule and Guests

The BritTrak is Dragoncon's British media track. Mostly, the track focuses on TV and movies, often of a science fictional nature, but also examines the written word, dealing with characters such as Sherlock Holmes and authors like H. G. Wells.

Guests for the BritTrak at Dragoncon 2008 include:

Gareth David-Lloyd, best known for his role as Ianto Jones in the British SF television program Torchwood.

Robert Llewellyn is probably best known for his role as the android Kryten in the hit SF sitcom Red Dwarf.

Anthony Lewis: In 2008 he appeared on Season Two of Torchwood as the WWII soldier Thomas "Tommy" Reginald Brockless in the episode To the Last Man.

James Marsters: James guest-starred on the second series/season of Torchwood as Captain John Hart. James is, of course, best-known for his role of Spike on Buffy and Angel. (James will also be a guest on the WhedonTrack at this year's Dragoncon.)

Jeremy Bulloch: During the 1970's he appeared in many other films including three James Bond films where he portrayed the character Smithers (Q's assistant). He also played Boba Fett in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Jeremy appeared regularly in the popular TV series Robin of Sherwood where he played the part of Edward of Wickham. Last year he appeared in a BBC TV series called Spooks (this series was called MI5 in the United States). Later this year he will be filming a pilot for the sci-fi series titled Star Hyke.

Another favorite series he has appeared in is Doctor Who where he played the part of Tor in The Space Museum with William Hartnell as the First Doctor. He also played the part of Hal the Archer in The Time Warrior when Jon Pertwee was the Third Doctor.

Atlanta Gallifreyans meeting this Saturday, July 19, at 4:30 PM

For all you new people, we meet the third Saturday of every month starting at 4:30 and going 'til 11:00 or 12:00 midnight. Not everyone stays that late, of course, but there's always a group of us still hanging around. We bring food and drinks to share with everyone (IF you're able to...if not, please show up anyway, we'd rather have join us empty handed than not at all!) and we catch up on Doctor Who news, watch some awesome tellie, and hang out with each other. Very informal. :)

This time we have Turn Left and the 2-part finale, The Stolen Earth and Journey's End, to watch, plus the next serving in our Sylvester McCoy buffet, Battlefield. I think later on we're going to continue with the next episode or two of Quatermass, which is one of the shows that was a big influence on Doctor Who in its earlier years.

Jumpcon in Boston cancelled for this weekend

I think that most of the Doctor Who-related guests for the Boston Jumpcon, like Mary Tamm and John Levene, had already cancelled or been cancelled by the con, but getting the word out is important.

That's three Jumpcons cons in a row, cancelled. I can't imagine that any of the others will be a "go". Folks in Boston can go to Readercon this weekend, but it's a totally literary con, with no media guests. Can't say that I wasn't expecting this. Blast! Between this debacle and FedCon in Dallas, fans, especially those new to organized fandom, could be doubtful about other cons, and it could hurt long-established cons. :(

Announcement to fans coming to JumpCon Boston:

I regret to announce the cancellation of our Boston event. Many
factors that needed to come together to make it happen simply did not.
We tried everything humanly possible and were unable to overcome the
insurmountable obstacles. This is not to say that I don't take the
blame myself, I do. I wanted to see this succeed so badly that I was
blinded to some warning signs that should have been obvious. If I have
learned anything through this process it's that running a convention
business is far more intricate and fraught with peril than it seemed
at the outset. I fully apologize to all the fans who've been
inconvenienced by this late announcement and assure them that we're in
the process of getting you all refunds. I know there are airfare and
other considerations for which you will be liable and for that I am
truly sorry. I wanted to let you know today rather than keep trying to
pull this off and end up like FedCon USA where the fans were already
in attendance. Please accept my humble apology, but I'll understand if
you can't.

To all the consultants and industry experts that were brought in to
help; I thank them and hold them blameless as they advised me and
tried to do what they could to help. They should not be held
accountable for my actions, they should be lauded for what they did
try to accomplish based on what they had to work with.

To all of the media guests that were to appear at our events; I want
to say - I am sorry that this has happened and has put some of you
into your own troubles by declining work, saying no to other
conventions, and other issues. My intentions were honorable and I
expected to be able to salvage things but at this point it seems I
cannot.

Hey-- hope you're enjoying the 4th of July weekend! The weather's beautiful here in Chicago-- warm (but not hot), sunny, low humidity-- can't ask for more!

You all, however, have certainly asked for more-- more guests for this year's Chicago TARDIS! We're happy to oblige.

We're pleased to welcome back our dear friend DR. ARNOLD T. BLUMBERG. Co-author of "Howe's Transcendental Toybox" and designer of the poll-topping "The Target Book" (amongst many things), Arnold will add to the quality of discussions throughout the weekend.

Joining us for the first time will be the popular team of KATE ORMAN and JONATHAN BLUM. Kate wrote several Virgin and BBC DOCTOR WHO novels, including "The Left-Handed Hummingbird" and "The Year of Intelligent Tigers." Jonathan co-wrote "Vampire Science," "The Seeing I," and "Unnatural History" with Kate, and scripted the first Big Finish Seventh Doctor audio, "The Fearmonger."

The Key to Time mini-series (take two)

Big Finish is releasing an audio sequel to the Doctor Who season 16 Key to Time stories with the Key 2 Time (sic) mini-series. It will be in three parts and will be released between January and March 2009.

This stars the Fifth Doctor (as voiced by Peter Davison) on a new hunt for the six segments of the Key, but supposedly his task won't be as easy as it was the first time around.

He is joined by a new companion, Amy, one of two sentient humanoid `Tracers', created to find the six segments of the Key. She is played by Ciara Janson and the role of her twin sister Zara is played by Laura Doddington.

Earlier this year, thanks to IDW Publishing, the Doctor returned to
American comics in the "Doctor Who" miniseries and this August will
begin his second miniseries, "Doctor Who: The Forgotten," by Tony Lee
and Pia Guerra ("Y: The Last Man").

In the popular Doctor Who novel "The Eight Doctors," writer Terrance
Dick, of whom Tony Lee is a great fan, re-visited previous
incarnations of the Doctor in the midst of adventures from the
original series. In IDW's "Doctor Who: The Forgotten," Lee decided to
take the alternate route and create all new adventures for the classic
Doctors. "Although it's always nice to revisit old friends," Lee told
CBR News, "I think we can give more 'forgotten tales' in these short
flashbacks. We have the First Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Susan meeting
Egyptians; we have the Second, Jamie and Zoe meeting space lizards;
the Third, Jo and The Brigadier (and pretty much most of the UNIT
regulars) defeating aliens on Dartmoor; the Fourth and Romana (two) in
millennium Paris; the Fifth, Tegan and Turlough facing a more recent
addition in a Village cricket match; the Sixth and Peri in a
courtroom; the Seventh and Ace in an alien war torn city; the Eighth
alone in a Count of Monte Cristo setting; and the Ninth and Rose in
the trenches of World War I. And every single one of them has been an
utter joy to write.

"Oh and of course we have the Tenth and Martha," Lee added, "in a
strange museum being hassled by gun happy waxworks, giant familiar

I just wanted to remind everyone in the metro (and beyond) Atlanta area that the next meeting of the Atlanta Gallifreyans (Atlanta's own Doctor Who club) is tomorrow, Saturday June the 21st, starting at 4:30 PM at the Doraville Civic Center. (The civic center is within walking distance of the Doraville Marta station, and is a block or so away from the Buford Hiway and I-285 intersection. Directions at the AG site, below.)

Please bring one of the following: food or drink or plate and napkins and plastic cutlery with which to share with all, if you can. :)

We will be watching the last part of The Greatest Show in the Galaxy (time constraints kept us from watching all the way to to the end last month, alas). We're in the middle of watching a Seventh Doctor episode per meeting. Next up is Battlefield. We should be finished with McCoy by October at the latest, which means that we will be returning to the Third Doctor with The Three Doctors, just in time for the show's anniversary month in November! :)

The Tenth Doctor episodes that we should be watching include Silence in the Library, Forest of the Dead, and Midnight. If we are lucky, we will also be watching Turn Left! We are skipping The Wasp and the Unicorn for now, since it was just shown on the Sci-Fi Channel, so most everyone has had a chance to see it hopefully.

TimeGate is the Doctor Who and Stargate con for Atlanta, GA, USA.

For those of you who have attended previous TimeGates, you know that we put on a great little con. :) No over-crowding, and with plenty of time to stop and chat with our guests, local and international, and all the other interesting attendees. We had such a grand time with this last one that we will be doing it again. *beams*

Recognize the subject line quote? If so, you might already have an idea of whom I'm about to announce! Chicago TARDIS is indeed thrilled to add

ELISABETH SLADEN

to our growing list of guests at this year's convention. Ms. Sladen, of course, is beloved by Doctor Who fans worldwide for her portrayal of Sarah Jane Smith, companion to the Third and Fourth Doctors, who has crossed over into New Series continuity with her appearance in the Tenth Doctor story "School Reunion" and her CBBC spin-off series "The Sarah Jane Adventures." She hasn't been at a Chicago convention since 1993, so we're doubly excited she will be joining us this year.

Unfortunately, due to the costs involved in bringing Ms. Sladen to our convention, Chicago TARDIS will be charging for her autograph and photograph sessions. The photograph session will cost $20 if you bring your own camera, or $25 if you want us to take the photo. (You'll get an 8 x 10 of the photo.) The autograph session will cost $20 if you bring your own item to get signed, or $25 if you decide to purchase one of the photos available at the session. (All-Access Members get into the sessions for free-- another membership level perk.)

Folks, please don't forget that TimeGate VI is happening this weekend. We are now a four day con, staring up Friday afternoon, May 23rd, and going through Monday afternoon, May 26th, at the Holiday Inn Select on the top end of I-285. Still in Atlanta, GA, USA.

need Doctor Who cosplayers for the Costume panel at TimeGate

For those of you attending TimeGate this year, as I have mentioned before, we are having a Costume Contest.
That event takes place at 10 PM on Sunday night. Sign-up sheets should be at Registration.

There's also the Costume Panel, and that's happening at 8:30 PM on Friday night. I would love to have as many Doctor Who cosplayers as possible in the audience, so that I can point to each one and ask them to stand up and model their outfit, and maybe even tell a little bit about it, if it was made for or by them, or if it was purchased ready-made (i.e. not made specially as Doctor Who garb, but that it was put together to make a Doctor Who cosplay outfit). Such a little talk must be brief, under a minute if at all possible.

worried about Donna

I'm a bit worried about Donna, because of a few lines at the end of The Doctor's Daughter .

Back on April 20th of this year I wrote a long essay on some comparisons between Season Four and previous seasons, mostly of Ten's era. This is a brief continuation of that meta. At the moment I'm a little worried about Donna, simply because of her conversation with Martha at the end of The Doctor's Daughter. Martha's once again trying to warn Donna about traveling with the Doctor, just as she did in the beginning of The Sontaran Stratagem, and Donna's not really paying any attention, or at the least, isn't concerned. In fact, she tells Martha that she's gonna travel with the bloke forever. Had I been a cat, my ears would have pricked up at this, as it somewhat parallels the exchange between Ten and Rose at the beginning of Army of Ghosts :

Ten: "How long are you going to stay with me?"

Rose: "Forever."

Rose is smiling in pure happiness, but the look on Ten's face is a bit ambiguous. He wants her to stay as long as she likes, as long as she can, but he knows that it can't last forever. He knows that she knows this too, after their little talk outside the coffee shop in School Reunion.

Yeah, I'm worried about Donna now. Especially after what happened to Rose.

TimeGate--Hotel Update

TimeGate VI: Regenerations is the Stargate and Doctor Who convention in Atlanta, GA, this May!

For those of you trying to book a room at the TimeGate hotel, you may be or may not be aware that our hotel had some trouble with their registration system week before last. The internal problem got fixed earlier this past week, but we were still having trouble with on-line registration. Thanks to the assistance of Lukas at HI, that problem has now been solved as well. So on-line registrations are working again! Which means that if you haven't booked your hotel room yet and still want to, you have until Tuesday, May 6 to do so, and you can either call the hotel or book on-line. Rooms are only $69 a night. Remember that the con runs from Friday, May 23rd to Monday, May 26th, 2008, at the Holiday Inn Select in Atlanta, GA.
