...Transport Network for Companion Animals... |

| Name: | Drive for Life | |
| Theme: | Volunteer transports for shelter and rescue animals nationwide - one by one until there are none. | |
| Website: | Drive For Life: Transport Index | |
| About: | This community was started after a realization that there really was no network in place on LiveJournal for those that may wish to help transport animals. A lot of users seemed unaware that there were even networks in place, and once aware of them, seemed eager to help. This is an attempt to give people who both need help and want to help in the endeavor of transporting companion animals from or to fosters, rescues, shelters, forever homes, or anywhere else they need to go a place to stay updated on current cries for help, or to post their own needs for help across the nation. Please feel free to post: |!| Transports with all the proper information |!| Your willingness to help transport an animal |!| Requests for aide transporting an animal |!| Updates or new information on currently listed transports |!| Outcomes and information pertaining to completed transports |!| News or information pertinent to the transport of animals |!| Questions regarding transport of animals Please do not post: |!| Advertisements for animals for sale, or that need to be adopted |!| Intentionally volatile or argumentative posts (entries that are made for the express purpose of inciting a 'flame war') |!| Requests for donations for shelters or rescues unless it pertains to transports (such as requests for needed supplies) If you are unsure whether or not your material is appropriate, please post but be willing to take it down at a moderator's request. If your post is extraordinarily long or includes an unusually large or multiple pictures, please use an LJ-Cut. The moderators of this community reserve all rights to ban and/or delete any users or topics after a warning. In extreme cases, a warning may not be issued, but this will be at the moderators' discretion. If you have any questions regarding |!| Submitting A Transport Request |!| Any species of animal that can logically be transported is a viable candidate, regardless of species, breed or age. Animals must be of stable physical health for travel and mentally capable of withstanding the rigor of their appointed trip. Any restrictions, conditions, exceptions or extremes with regards to temperament, behavior or health must be made abundantly clear in the request for transport. The safety and health of the animals is priority and at no time shall that priority change. Transport coordinators are responsible for handling all aspects of their transport case. Coordinators are expected to map routes, handle filling requests, arrange for overnight stays if needed and assure the proper care, safety and security of the animals they submit for transport. They are also responsible for verifying that the information they provide is accurate and that the rescue or home they are transporting to or from is responsible and will only serve to better the animal's life - not worsen. In order to be as effective and efficient as possible, we highly recommend but no longer require that transport requests be submitted and posted in an easy to read, set format. While the reason for certain tactics, such as excessive exclamation points, randomized bolded text, capitalized forms and exceedingly bright colors, is understood, these often abused forms of notification render submissions difficult to read and are discouraged. PLEASE BE ADVISED: Though we no longer require that transports be entirely formatted in the same way, we do still require that certain information be present - that is all animals must be healthy enough for transport, up to date on vaccinations, altered, traveling with proper documentation including a health certificate, and basic information on the sending and receiving parties. We will also still require that the vast majority of information be contained behind an lj-cut as specified below to help keep the community neat and minimize the space we take up on our members' friendslists. Should you submit a transport lacking or violating this information, you will be asked by a moderator to edit your post accordingly or remove it altogether. Posts not edited or removed within twenty-four hours will be removed by a moderator. No exceptions. For those of you new or uncertain to cross posting or coordinating we do provide the following format, and invite you to use it if you would like to do so. Again, this is no longer a requirement, merely a suggestion and perhaps a starting point. There are currently four colors that have decided implications in submissions for transport: Black for most text, including all information and extra details. (Hex Code: #000000) Red for legs of transports that need filled, and, rarely, important details in the information sections. (Hex Code: #FF0000) Blue to represent legs of transports that have been filled (and of course, links). (Hex Code: #0000FF) Green for notifications of canceled or changed routes, or other similar updates. (Hex Code: #008000)

If a volunteer chooses to accept a leg or more of a transport request, they must conduct all arrangements with the coordinator of that transport. NOTICE: Replying to or contacting the community moderators or other individuals submitting a transport request which they are not also coordinating will only result in a request to contact the transport coordinator. Although we, as moderators and volunteers, do like to hear about transports and their outcome, we are unable to give you more information than that which we have supplied. If you wish to help, you must contact the transport coordinator. Transport volunteers are accountable for assuring the safety and well being of the animals for which they choose to take responsibility by accepting and filling a request for transport. Any and all required equipment, if not provided with transport, will need to be supplied by the transport volunteers. Related Communities Animal Health: Behavior/Training: Rescue: Yahoo! It is addressed to all who can find even a hint of understanding, or comfort, or strength within its prose. Insert your name here, call to mind your cause, and read as if I were speaking to you. This is an open letter. It goes out to the little girl who had no one but the strays she brought home. She who the animals seemed to choose, to whom they came from miles and miles around as if drawn to a kindred heart. To the girl who hid dogs in the barn and cats in the basement and birds in the closet... not to harm them, but to save them from her mother or father knowing, for surely they would cast them out. To the girl who would suddenly mind as if angels themselves had asked her to go to bed, huddled under blankets and pretending to be asleep if her parents would only just go away. To the girl who crept from her bed, opened her door, and with dove held close and eyes squeezed tightly shut, begged silently for one more day of secrecy. This is an open letter, to the man with the nine to five job and the after hours heart. To he that night after night would go home to an empty, sterile house and an empty, cold bed, and fall asleep knowing that the next day would be the same as this. That it must be, as the job that he hates is the only way possible he can escape on the weekends. Weekends with a car full of dogs and the open road and a warm feeling deep in his chest that he may not have anything else, but this would be enough; delivering that adoring Rottie girl with the litter of pups to her rescue would be enough. To the man who hangs his head on Wednesday and cries silently for the strength to make it to Friday. This is an open letter, a reach for the girl who became the tired-eyed worker at the shelter. Who grew up asking Santa for a puppy and taping brightly colored Lisa Frank folders (with smiling rainbow unicorns and peaceful eyed golden retrievers and pink and purple kittens) on the walls of her Pound Puppy littered room. Who grew up, and had her dreams replaced by the reality of oil drum after oil drum of euthanized, mutt-bred shelter animals. Who grew up, and now spends her days biting her tongue as she is asked by owner after owner "You'll find a good home for them... right?" Because everyone knows that those ponies and dragons and star-swimming dolphins all find good homes in the shelters... This is an open letter to anyone who has ever handed over a credit card with no balance on it, unflinchingly, to the veterinary receptionist. To every heartsick parent, not of babies or seniors but of kittens, who has ever curled up in a sleeping bag on the kitchen floor because the trip up and down the stairs every two hours is harder than the linoleum. To every lid-heavy volunteer who has ever driven all night so that one dog, one five pound, two legged, incontinent, drooling dog, would have a chance at a better life half a continent away. To every nine-fingered iguana handler that grins and says "It's a small price to pay." To every shelter worker that has ever had to smile through the urge to scream as her best friend in the world squeals with delight because their dog, the unspayed bitch with the bad hips and questionable lineage, is going to have "just one litter." To the parents of the children who brought home animal after animal and, without the heart to say no, found somehow infinite space in a finite area. To every pet owner that has ever had to defend their certified shelter pet against the condescending looks of the "purebred" owners. To every pit owner, who has ever had to try and maintain some sort of dignity as the authorities escort their dog away for no other reason than being alive, while the neighbors scoff "Good Riddance." To every animal lover that knows the score, and keeps fighting this uphill battle. Please, god, goddess, gods... Lord and Lady and Mother Earth... let us be worthy of this task. ![]() ![]() One By One Until There Are None Feel free to utilize this banner in your profile or elsewhere, but please upload the image to your own webspace or hosting site.
