SAGINAW COUNTY, Mich. -- A new comedy film about female roller derby is skating its way to Birch Run Township Monday.

Crew members from the Drew Barrymore-directed movie “Whip It!” have began production at the former Ken’s Diner on M-83 just north of Birch Run Road.

The movie, which stars Barrymore, Ellen Page of "Juno" and Juliette Lewis, began filming in Texas and Southeast Michigan in late July. Page will play an ex-beauty pageant contestant in a small Texas town who sneaks off to skate in the Austin roller derby league.

Hollywood crews transformed the Mid-Michigan former diner into a fictional BBQ restaurant called the Oink Joint. "Whip It!" location managers told TV5 they will be closing M-83 down off and on during shooting.

In April, Gov. Jennifer Granholm signed legislation aimed at giving Michigan a bigger role in the film industry. The key bill in the package gave film studios a refundable credit of up to 42 percent on production expenses in the state.

The bills also cover commercials, TV shows, documentaries, video games and other film work.

In a press release announcing the film, Page said, "I really admire how Drew constantly challenges herself as an artist. She's proven herself as an actress and a producer, and I have no doubt she'll bring great vision and creativity to the director's chair.”

The $10 million production marks Barrymore's directorial debut.

Here’s your chance to be a part of Hollywood, right here in Detroit, Michigan!

Flower Films is looking for non-paid movie extras in the Detroit area on August
5th, 7th and 8th for the Drew Barrymore directed film Whip It! The first 100
people to show up each day up at the location below will be cast as roller derby
spectators.

Here’s how it works:

You must be between the ages of 18 and 40 with a valid drivers license or
government identification card. Each day prior to August 5th, 7th and 8th, you
must log back into this website where the following days ‘call time’ will be
posted. The first 100 people that show up at each ‘call time’ will be shuttled
to the movie set where you will be placed as extras in various scenes in the
movie. THERE WILL BE TWO CALL TIMES FOR TUESDAY, AUGUST 5TH. 8:30AM AND 3:30PM.

You must come in appropriate ‘wardrobe’. The scenes you will be in take place at
an Austin Texas Roller Derby bout, so think hip and cool, youthful and fun. NO
white shirts or white shoes. Think Rockabilly, Punk Rock and Tattoos. Make sure that you do NOT
wear any clothing with corporate logos or characters such as ‘Nike’, ‘Gap’,
‘Abercrombie & Fitch’, ‘Snoopy’, etc. Long pants and closed toe footwear is also
required. You should bring a few extra looks to ensure being placed in the film.
Hats, belts and tights are all good, but nothing too trendy, think underground.

You may be asked to work up to 10 hours. You should eat before you get here, but
you will be served a hot meal if you work beyond 8 hours.

Parking is located at the corner of Huber St. and Mt. Elliott St. Entrance to
the lot is just off of Huber St on Pease St. From there you will be shuttled to
the set.

No photographs allowed. Anyone seen taking a photo with any type of camera or
cell phone will be asked to leave the film immediately. Thank you so much!

Justin withdraws from Drew's movie - Whip It

Drew Barrymore apparently whipped him good.

A source tells E! News that Justin Long, who remains "distraught" over being dumped by the Charlie's Angels star, has dropped out of the roller derby comedy "Whip It!" which marks Barrymore's feature directorial debut.

"He couldn't stand working with her and not being with her," the Long insider says. "He's too upset."

Adds our source: "She dumped him. She was hot and cold. One minute she was in love with him and the next she wanted to break up with him.

"He is so distraught over the split that he dropped out of the movie."

Chris Miller, a rep for Flower Films (Barrymore's production company with partner Nancy Juvonen), would not confirm whether Long had been formally attached to the project, saying, "It's bordering on his personal life," and directing E! News to Long's rep.

"We never comment on cast," Miller added.

Long’s publicist, Carrie Gordon, did not immediately return calls for comment.

Whip It!, based on the book Derby Girls, which is about the life of a female roller derby player, begins shooting Monday in Michigan. Starring alongside Barrymore are Ellen Page, Juliette Lewis, Marcia Gay Harden, Zoe Bell and Kristen Wiig.

Reps for Long, 30, and Barrymore, 33, confirmed the formerly PDA-happy couple's breakup on July 7. The He's Just Not That Into You costars had dated for almost nine months and had celebrated Long’s birthday together in June.

The duo also made a trek to see a live roller derby event in Los Angeles as preparation for the movie.

Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, Juliette Lewis and Zoe Bell are mixing it up with Ellen Page and Drew Barrymore in the roller ring.

Barrymore will play Page's teammate in Mandate Pictures' roller derby comedy "Whip it!" then skate behind the camera between takes to make her feature directorial debut.

Harden plays an overbearing ex-beauty queen who would rather see her daughter, Bliss (Page), in pageants than skates. Wiig ("Saturday Night Live") plays Bliss' rowdy mentor, Malice in Wonderland. Lewis is Dinah Might, the star of Austin's top team. Bell plays a medical technician moonlighting as derby star Bloody Holly.

The film begins shooting this summer in Michigan and Texas.

Harden is repped by CAA and Framework Entertainment. Wiig is repped by UTA and Odenkirk Talent Management. Lewis is repped by Don Buchwald and Associates, and Bell is repped by CAA and Drama 3/4.

It was his first brush with fame in his 16 years as principal at Bates Elementary School, and Paul Elsey didn't even realize it. A crew scouting locations for a new film being produced by actress Drew Barrymore dropped by the school late last month. For about 20 minutes, staff at the Woodhaven school led an eight-member crew around, showing off the building and answering questions. When it came time to take a photo to preserve the visit for future generations of students, Elsey posed next to a diminutive blond in worn jeans. It was only afterward that school secretary Michelle DeMaggio informed him that who he thought was "an attractive member of the crew" actually was a member of one of Hollywood's most esteemed acting families.

"When you look at her in the picture, she has on ripped blue jeans and looks just like another young person in the film crew," he said. The Tinseltown crew was in Michigan scouting locations for Barrymore's upcoming movie, "Whip It!" starring "Juno" wunderkind Ellen Page. The Barrymore-helmed film revolves around an indie rock-loving misfit played by Page finding a way to deal with small-town misery in Texas by discovering a love for a roller derby league in nearby Austin.

The visit was influenced by Gov. Jennifer Granholm's new incentive program to encourage film production in the state. The incentive provides up to a 42 percent refundable tax credit for productions shot in Michigan, with as many as 16 projects reportedly lined up so far. Bates is in the running with schools in Ypsilanti and Grand Rapids to be featured in the film. It all began with a call the morning of May 19 from location scout Caitlin Ringness.

"She said they were driving by and thought the front of our building looked like a rural Texas high school," Elsey said. Ringness arranged to have the crew drop by the next day for a look inside and mentioned that Barrymore was acting as producer. "The next day, we had big bets that Drew would come in a big limo, but the crew showed up in a regular van," he said. Elsey assumed by the inconspicuous arrival that the Hollywood star hadn't made the trip with the crew. "The students were dismayed that we didn't share it with them, but I didn't know," he said.

During the visit, the crew asked about the school's availability, took notes and snapped quite a few pictures. "They were very respectful of the school and that education was going on," he said. "They felt the interior of the building didn't meet what they were looking for but were very impressed with the front."

Even if the school isn't chosen, Elsey said just having the Hollywood visit was thrilling in itself. "We were all very excited," he said. "It was a neat experience."

The star of the upcoming He's Just Not That Into You was heard explaining that she'd been wanting the standard stainless-steel barbell accessory for seven years, a source reports.

"She was really cute," says the source. "When she was filling out her release form, one of the questions was, Do you have a history of passing out? She said jokingly, 'Only when self-induced.' "

Barrymore brought along two friends to hold her hand during the painful procedure.

No word what boyfriend Justin Long thinks about the new accessory, but betcha he won't mind it one bit.

Barrymore's rep declined to comment.

Drew Barrymore's Car Struck In Hit-And-Run In West Hollywood

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- Actress Drew Barrymore was the victim of a hit- and-run accident in West Hollywood but was not injured, authorities said Tuesday.

The collision occurred late Monday morning as Barrymore was driving near Gardner Street and Santa Monica Boulevard, said Sgt. Kristen Aloma of the West Hollywood Sheriff's Station.

Barrymore was not injured, Aloma said. The hit-and-run motorist remained at large, she said.

According to the celebrity news Web site TMZ.com, Barrymore followed the hit-and-run vehicle after her vehicle was rear-ended and got its license plate number.

Drew, 33, will be playing ‘Little’ Edith Bouvier Beale in the upcoming film Grey Gardens alongside Jessica Lange who will play her ‘Big’ Edith Bouvier Beale.

They will play the aunt and first cousin of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. The film depicts the everyday lives of two women who lived at Grey Gardens, a decrepit 28-room mansion in the neighborhood of East Hampton, New York.

Grey Gardens is scheduled to be released November 2008.

Drew Barrymore was a busy bee all in stripes as she left the set of Everybody's Fine in Connecticut yesterday. After filming she headed over to NYC where she was spotted in the East Village. She was equipped with the essential BlackBerry and iced coffee to go with her smile, but from the size of her sweater and jacket she probably could've used a warmer drink. Then again, a big cozy hug from Justin Long sounds like just the ticket after a long day of stressful work on the set.

Robert De Niro, Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell are set to star in the Kirk Jones-directed Everybody's Fine, reports Variety.

Miramax Films acquired worldwide rights on the film that will begin shooting in Connecticut later this month. The remake of the Giuseppe Tornatore film Stanno tutti bene was written by Jones.

De Niro will play a widower who realizes that his deceased wife was his only connection to his children. He decides on a whim to take a road trip to reconnect with each of his grown kids, discovering that their lives are far from perfect.

Gianni Nunnari will produce with Ted Field, Vittorio Cecchi Gori and Glynis Murray. Craig Flores, Callum Greene and Mike Weber are executive producers.

The actress, an amateur photographer in her free time, borrowed a camera from the house fotog at Saturday's Playboy Golf lingerie party and started snapping away at Bunnies. "One Bunny was bent over, balancing teacups on her butt that Andy Milonakis had placed there, and Drew said, 'I have to get this shot,' " said our spy.
