Having a roller-derby name is 'kind of like being a superhero'
By Anthony Breznican, USA TODAY

"It's all about small victories": But Whip It is a big victory for Drew Barrymore it's her directorial debut. She also stars as Smashley Simpson.

Doesn't sound like the kind of girls you bring home to mother — unless your mom is a roller-derby fan.

These are the main characters in Whip It, Drew Barrymore's first directorial effort, a coming-of-age story starring Juno's Ellen Page as a petite teenage girl who rebels against her beauty-pageant-obsessed mother (Marcia Gay Harden) and boring Texas town by joining the rough-and-tumble world of roller derby under the name Babe Ruthless.

Barrymore plays Smashley, and Saturday Night Live's Kristen Wiig is Maggie, her sister in arms (and elbows) on the local Hurl Scouts derby team. It gets its name from the members' green faux-Girl Scout uniforms, complete with merit badges for kicking butt.

New Drew Barrymore film set in newsroom
By: FRAZIER MOORE
Associated Press
July 8, 2009

NEW YORK — Will it be a busy news week for Drew Barrymore?

On Monday, a romantic comedy starring Barrymore as an older-than-usual newspaper intern is scheduled to arrive for several days' shooting at the New York headquarters of The Associated Press.

Barrymore and a production crew will be on hand during the week to shoot scenes for "Going the Distance."

The AP's newsroom will serve as the setting for the mythical New York Sentinel, where Barrymore's character works.

Meanwhile, real-life newsgathering will continue around her as usual by the AP's editorial staff in the sprawling facility, home to the AP since 2004, which covers roughly the size of two American football fields.

Several scenes are expected to be shot for the film, which also stars Justin Long and is directed by Nanette Burstein ("American Teen" and "The Kid Stays in the Picture"). Also featured are Christina Applegate and Jason Sudeikis. The film, a New Line Cinema production, depicts Barrymore and Long as a couple struggling with their long-distance relationship.

New York's Daily News, based in the same Manhattan office building as the AP's headquarters, will also play a part in the film, appearing as a fictional rival newspaper to the Sentinel.

Payment for use of the AP newsroom will go to the AP Emergency Relief Fund, which helps AP staff and family members worldwide cope with catastrophes not covered by company benefits or insurance, according to AP spokeswoman Ellen Hale.

Applegate Going to the Movies With Barrymore
Today 1:05 PM PDT by Marc Malkin

Christina Applegate is now family to Drew Barrymore.

A source exclusively reveals to me that the Samantha Who? star has signed on for a role in Going the Distance, a romantic comedy starring Barrymore and her maybe-real-life boyfriend Justin Long as a couple in a long-distance relationship.

Applegate will play big sister to Barrymore's character, according to my source.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Charlie Day has also joined the cast, playing a friend of Long's, the source said.

Directed by Nanette Burstein, the New Line flick begins shooting July 15 in New York City. Adam Shankman and Jennifer Gibgot are producing.

Reps for Applegate and Day confirmed their new gigs.

Drew Barrymore Sheer Is Sexy
Mon, 18 May 2009 at 5:35 pm

Drew Barrymore wears an 80’s-inspired get-up as she arrives at The Post Group studios on Monday (May 18) in Hollywood.

The 34-year-old actress wore an American Apparel sheer plain white tee over her AA Tie Dye Cotton Spandex Ruched Front Tube Bra in Fluorescent Yellow/Black. Drew accessorized with dog tags and white-rimmed sunglasses. She finished off her fun outfit with a single finger-less glove, tie-dye-esque leggings and black leather sandals.

WHAT DO YOU THINK of Drew’s new look — YAY or NAY?

Drew Barrymore's Gardens Greater Than Zac Efron?
Tue., Apr. 21, 2009 3:15 PM PDT by Joal Ryan

If Drew Barrymore's Grey Gardens had been in theaters this weekend, would it have outgrossed Zac Efron's 17 Again? Is Melissa Joan Hart the new queen of TV movies? And what could possibly be a hipper comedy than The Office?

The answers—and more questions—in the latest TV ratings pop quiz:

1. Could the HBO-aired Grey Gardens have been a No. 1 box office hit? Assuming every single member of its premiere broadcast audience bought a ticket over the weekend, and assuming the competition remained the same, then no, Grey Gardens would not have opened at No. 1.

But its 1.8 million Saturday night viewers (not including replays) would have translated into a roughly $13 million weekend, about the best a grown-up drama can do at the box office these days.

As it was, the movie—cats, squalor and all—was HBO's fourth most watched TV movie of the last five years, the network said, outdrawing the likes of Recount and Mrs. Harris.

Drew Scary-more The star of "Grey Gardens" keeps working the bag lady look
By SCOTT ROSS
Updated 9:29 AM CDT, Mon, Apr 20, 2009

Buzz up!

It seems like only yesterday that Drew Barrymore was a stone fox. Screwed up eyes and screwed down hairdo.

To look at the coverage of Drew Barrymore from Coachella that's making its way around the Internet, it appears the once-beautiful actress has fallen off the weird wagon.

Barrymore was photographed this weekend at the SoCal rock festival sporting Ziggy Stardust-style streaks of white and blue around each eye and what appears to be the remnants of a bird glued to one side of her head.

In 2007 she was voted World's Most Beautiful by People magazine. But later that year she began filming "Grey Gardens" alongside Jessica Lange as the real-life mother-daughter cat lady duo of the Bouvier clan.

The role of "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale required Barrymore to dress like a half-mad hobo, and with the premiere of the HBO film earning her rave reviews, it seems that the Covergirl model has decided that, for now at least, the crazy lady look is working for her.

Lange, Barrymore like mother and daughter after 'Gardens'
By Donna Freydkin, USA TODAY

NEW YORK — Drew Barrymore greets Jessica Lange with her pet name for the two-time Oscar winner.

"Mother darling!" Barrymore trills, with a gentle hug in deference to Lange's broken collarbone and bruised ribs, sustained during a fall at her Minnesota cabin last month.

Barrymore uses the term of endearment both in person and "all the time when she calls. That's how I always know it's her," Lange says.

It's the fittingly theatrical nickname Barrymore's character has for Lange in HBO's Grey Gardens, premiering Saturday at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The highly anticipated film is based on the 1975 documentary about the eccentric mother-and-daughter duo of "Big Edie" and "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale, the aunt and first cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and their derelict, destitute existence at the family's once-grand East Hampton estate.

Drew Barrymore freaks out David Letterman again
Apr 16, 2009, 09:32 AM | by Ken Tucker

You may recall that in 1995, Drew Barrymore's birthday gift to David Letterman was to flash him, one of the more memorable talk-show appearances. Last night on the Late Show, Barrymore remained fully clothed to promote her new HBO movie Grey Gardens. But her tongue-piercing and her proclamation, "I'm a good-time gal," both delighted and alarmed the wily Letterman.

"It'll get infected... and you may lose most of your tongue," Dave mock-scolded her. Barrymore said she got the piercing to play a movie role as a roller-derby contestant (the upcoming Whip It!). The character's name? "Smashley Simpson." Execellent!

Can You Wait For Grey Gardens to Air?
April 14, 2009

I know I’m certainly not alone in my obsession with Grey Gardens, the documentary concerning Jackie Kennedy’s aunt Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter “Little Edie,” the notorious inhabitants of a decrepit 28-room mansion in East Hampton. The women were notable for the legend they created: The original cat ladies, the mother and daughter existed in near isolation in crumbling circumstances, despite Edie’s promising early life as a model, socialite, and cabaret performer in New York. Since the documentary by “outsiders” Albert and David Maysles aired, the myth has taken on epic proportions: In addition to numerous citations in the arts and literature, a musical was developed, and unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard that this Saturday, HBO is releasing a feature film starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange. Word on the street is that in addition to voice training and wearing prosthetics, Barrymore went all method for the role, so it should be interesting to see if she encapsulates the irrepressible Little Edie or not. One thing is for certain: Edie’s iconic style, known for dark lipstick and an eccentric mix of textures and prints (think fur coat paired with nylon bathing suit and chiffon head scarf), may single-handedly be responsible for the fashion world’s current love affair with layering (okay, we’ll shout out to Nirvana here too, but still...). And with this new movie coming out, the “crazy lady” look is certain to be unequivocally back in style. So. Exciting.
